Hair Loss After Delivery

I gave birth to a boy about 3 months ago and have been losing hair since. I know this is normal but for how long will it last. Is there anything one can do to help slow it down. I had this with my first child but it didn't last this long or as much hair didn't fall out. thanks

What can I do next?

It's very normal. I lost a ton of hair post partum, but it really didn't start for me until about three months post partum. For both of my kids it lasted until they were one or so, before it finally stopped. It is only because you do not shed very much hair while you are pregnant, so it just seems like a ton coming out (just built up over 9 months LOL). Everybody is different, but from my experience with clients it usually lasts 3-6 months.

Make sure you don't have an underlying thyroid condition which can occur after pregnancy. A simple blood test can determine this. When I moved, I also had hair loss and, not only was it from the stress of moving but was because I had a lot of iron in my water. I switched my shampoo and conditioner to Biolage, which is what my hair stylist recommended at the time - yours may recommend something else. If you are taking any kind of medication, don't rule that out, too. Don't let this go on for too long. Good luck.

Totally normal. The timeframe is different for everyone, especially if nursing. Just wait until it starts coming back in, little spikeys everywhere. That's where I am right now (for the second time) so annoying!

Hah! Welcome to the postpartum hair loss club. 3 months is about the peak - at least it was for me (I'm 4.5 months now with child #2). What really helped me was getting a haircut. I'm not sure whether I'm actually losing less now or whether it just seems like it (though it got better immediately after my haircut) but I don't constantly find hair everywhere anymore. Congrats on your new baby!

J.,

I swear to God, I thought I was going to go bald!!!! lol I lost hair after all four of mine for up to a year after. I found what helped the most, keep taking those prenatal vitamins. Especially if you are breast feeding. I didn't find this out of course until after the birth of child number 4 and it cut down quite a bit on the amount of hair I did lose.

good luck!

Hi,
My hair kept falling out until about 7 months after I gave birth. I had low iron, so my doctor told me to take SlowFE, iron supplement. I think it helped. But even if everything is fine with you, the hair loss may last for a little while, but it is temporary. It will start growing back quickly too. But do get yourself checked, just to make sure there are no other problems.

usually what ever got bigger or better while we were caring we lose upon delivery.i continued my prenatle vitamins and that helped with alot of things, fingrnails hair, energy, skin ect. the vitamins kept me with what i needed well after giving birth

Hi J.. I saw the worst of the hair loss around months 4-5 postpartum. Then things lightened up -- I think it was completely over by 8 months postpartum for me.
