I think it is normal after childbirth - even 4 months out. I know I lost hair for at least that long and then it just stopped eventually. I know friends who it did not happen to so I guess everyone is different!

Hi,

Just like all the others my hair fell out in the masses after I gave birth to my son. Go to a salon or beauty brands place and buy Nioxin, hair products made for thinning and falling out hair. I used that as well as continued to take pre-natal vitamins and my hair slowly stopped falling out.

Hope this helps!

Hi R.,
I am a hairdresser and I have seen this problem over the 20 some years of doing hair. It has alot to do with the drop in progesterone hormone after giving birth. There are a couple of things you can do, one is to look for Nioxin shampoo and conditioner it will help you from losing anymore and will help grow back what was lost. It is endorsed by the American Cancer Society for use after chemo for hair loss. I use it and it really works great. The other thing you can do is find yourself some progesterone cream. I use one from Arbonne International that works great, it will help with fluxuating hormone levels and will help with your hair loss as well. Hope this is helpful.

Don't worry. While you were pregnant you stopped loosing your hair while your body focused on the baby. Then after you give birth it does seem like it's all falling out. It's just trying to catch up. It will grow back and it's totally normal.

This is perfectly normal after giving birth. For almost 10 months your body is in growth phase, which means you'll have very little shedding. When you give birth your body then goes into resting phase and you start shedding. It happens while your hormones are evening out. It CAN last for a long while, especially if you're nursing, but it WILL pass. After a while (it can take upwards of a year), you'll stop shedding so much and go back to your "old" ways, about 100 hairs each day.

You are not going bald. :)

My hair fell out for several months following each birth. It started to taper off when baby was about 6 months old and finally quit about 8 months. I think it has to do with hormones. But my hair is as thick as it ever was now, so I don't think you have to worry at all. I also have a friend who lost hair until almost a year after her child's birth, but that ended also, so there's hope. Good luck!

I am a 26 year old mother of a wonderful 10 month old baby boy. I also have noticed that since I gave birth my hair has thinned and also has started to fall out at an increased rate. In the beginning I was told that it was due to inadequate nutrition while breastfeeding. However, it has stopped falling out as much but still is much thinner than prebaby. I would check your diet to be sure that you are getting enough nutrition to keep up with the baby and child and that you are taking extra good care of yourself.

I had the exact same problem! After I had my daughter i started pulling hair out like i was going bald! It was aweful! I read something somewhere though that says that it has to do with your hormones going back to normal after having a baby and it will stop. Also have your iron levels checked because if your low then that could also be causing the hair loss! Oh and also in reguard to the hormone changes, while you are pregnant you don't loose as much hair so it seems like a lot more than usual but really it's not.

The same thing happened to me. I have always had a lot of very thick hair, so I was concerned when it started falling out after my first child. What I was told is that hair normally falls out here and there and we don't notice it. When you are pregnant your hair doesn't fall out at all. After pregnancy is over all of the extra hair that was supposed to fall out does so all at once. I don't know if this is true or not. I do know that I didn't go bald. I still have a very thick head of hair.

Congratulations on your daughter. Losing your hair is completely normal. During pregnancy, with all the hormones raging, your hair gets more abundant. Afterwards as your hormones return to normal, the excess hair (as Elvis would say) exits the building. I lost tons and it was my hairdresser who reassured me!

Usually very normal in postpartum women, as your hormones begin to return to a non-pregant normal. If it continues beyond what seems 'normal' to you, you may want to have your thyroid checked.

It is totally normal to loose a lot of hair after you have a baby and it usually happens around 3 months or so. Its the hormones getting back to normal and the hairloss will slow down with time. if you are concerned i would talk to your doctor, but i'll bet in a couple of months it will slow down and you will be fine. It happened to me with both of my kids and to all of my friends after they have had kids too.

I had the same thing happen to me with my second child and I did some reading and they say that hair loss between 2 to 6 months after giving birth is very normal and due to hormonal changes. The reading I did also said that you are just losing hair that you didn't lose during pregnancy because of all the folic acid, so don't worry you won't be bald!

I think it is very common to lose hair at 3-6 months after a birth, particularly if you are breast feeding. I did, and it continued for about six weeks. Then everything was back to normal. In reading about the causes, it seemed like the pregnancy hormones keep your hair from falling out (the normal 50-100 hairs per day) and once they are gone the hair that should have fallen out now falls out b/c of the hormone shift. Does that make sense? Hang in there--if it lasts longer than a month or two, I would see a doctor. But I think it is very common.

This is normal. It is not stress related, it is hormone related. I am at the same stage you are. I have a 4 1/2 month old and have noticed that I am losing my hair as well. Everywhere I go in the house I am finding my hair. It will grow back. Your baby should be losing her baby hair as well and growing her normal hair.

Hair loss is very commonly related to bodily changes, whether it be pregnancy, thyroid, diet, and I'm sure there are others. I had thyroid changes during my pregnancy and lost a lot of hair daily, I thought at 23 that I was going to end up bald. My doctor told me that it was because my body was going through so many changes and that it would take a little time to stop falling out.

the average person loses 100 hairs a day. as long as you take good care of your hair and are not balding, it's okay. Ways to prevent balding: eat healthy, drink lots of water, use shampoos and conditioners that work well with your hair type, don't overwash {i wash mine once a week because my hair is naturally dry}, and don't dye your hair

Hi R.,
I am not an expert, but I can only tell you I experienced the same thing when my kids were babies...are you breastfeeding? I was told that it's due to hormone changes...my hair also went from straight to wavy. If you do not feel like you are overwhelmed or "stressed", I would just consider it due to hormonal changes and just the wear and tear your body has gone through. I could suggest making sure you eat enough and enough highly nutritional foods, multivitamin or supplement...prenatal...especially if you are nursing. It does get better, at least imo. You could talk to a nutritionist and hair stylist to get their points of view on it. Kudos for being a loving mom and raising extraordinary children...savor every "mom"ent :)

welcome to the "hormones after birth" club!
I have two boys and experienced the same thing with each kiddo.
I guess the hair loss is due to the hormones in your body adjusting back to "normal".
It lasted about two months for me...
Boy #2 is five months old now - hair loss started about a month ago and has started to decrease (finally).
When it stops you will have a regular amount of hair-- just like Pre-pregnancy.

Typically women don't lose any hair when their pregnant so about three or four months after giving birth a woman will lose all of that hair she should have lost those nine months. This is very normal and unless it continues for a long time or your hair is getting significantly thinner than before you had the baby I wouldn't worry about it.

The body holds onto hair when pregnant. The hair that stayed falls out after birth. On top of that is age...we naturally lose our hair simply due to age. I'm 36 and I have to take very good care of my hair. I always had thin hair, but a lot of it. With 3 children and being 36, I no longer have a lot of it. I have to avoid rubber bands as much as possible...anything that pulls on it and I can't just tear a brush through it like I once did. I do not color it other than a few highlights occassionally and only in the front since color strips the hair. Proper hair care is now a neccessary part of my life!

It is very common for you to loose your hair after you have a baby. You do not loose much when you are pregnant and so about 4-8 months after you give birth you will start loosing hair. It usually grows back. It seems like it is a lot since you were not losing the normal amount during your pregnancy. Check out babcenter.com and type in hair loss, you may find a more scientific answer. I have found the website very helpful.

Hi R., the same thing happened to me after I gave birth to my little one last year (she's now 11 months). My doctor ran a blood test to check my thyroid and it came back normal, so it seems the hair loss for me was caused by hormones. I found that the handfuls of hair peaked at about 4 months - I was starting to worry that I was going bald - then the hair loss gradually slowed down and went back to normal. Now I can see short wispy hairs growing back in to replace all of those that fell out.

Hi, I think I know just what you are going thru...I had 3 boys, 8,5,2, and I'm now 44. With each pregnancy and afterwards I had similar hair loss. Unless you see bare patches of loss, it can be as simple as this: I believe there's a hormone that lets the scalp release hair regularly, and when that hormone is not present or another hormone dominates then your scalp holds onto the hair that is normally released and you get that "thick and healthy" hair that everyone talks about during pregnancy. After the birth of my sons then things get back to "normal" and lots of delayed hair is being released and clogs up the drain and the hair brush and we have to try hard to keep it out of our food...Ha Ha....Have your husband brush your hair and check for spots of bareness...I think you'll be fine...
Congrats on the new babe....

This isvery normal even in younger moms! My stylist told me she wouldn't put any checmicals in my hair until I was at least 4mo. post partum because so many women loose their hair. She said it was becasue Birth and pregnancy take such a toll on your body that it "attacks" your hair to replace things like protien. That is why it falls out. It's normal and should be nothing but annoying. If it is bad and you are developing bald spots, call your doc.

It is due to hormone levels. You are producing around 200-400 MG of Progesterone the last trimester and then after delivery it drops. You need 20-40 mg of progesterone a day.
I experienced this same thing until I went on Natural Progesterone Cream from Arbonne and started on their shampoo/conditioner. It is self adjusting and encourages hair growth naturally. Let me know if you want some samples of the shampoo/conditioner. I have a before and after picture on my website showing a man and his regrowth of hair from our hair care line.

I've had 3 pregnancies and with each, my hair has done the same thing. It's pretty annoying, but not dangerous or permanent. I was also told that your normal 1-10 hairs per day do not fall out while pregnant because of the hormones vitamins and all the other "stuff" that cycles through your body during pregnancy and that they all fall out at the same time shortly after delivery. I've always had fairly thin hair, and after 3 pregnancies and 3 bouts of "hair loss" my hair is actually thicker than it was before I had any kids. Don't worry about it too much. Just get a brush that has a whole bunch of bristles (a smoothing brush) and use it after you shower and when you brush your hair in the morning to catch more of the loose ones so they aren't coming out all over all the time. It will go away soon. For me, it always lasted a couple of months, then went away on it's own. Good luck!

While you're pregnant and for a few months after, you don't lose much hair (have you noticed your hair was thicker by the end of your pregnancy?)... Anyway, then it seems to make up for lost time by falling out a bunch for a while. Since you have millions of hairs in your head, it will probably not really matter. I just went through that too (for the third time with my baby boy... number 3!).

Take care of yourself, exercise, eat a well balanced diet and drink lots of water... your hair will be as healthy as it can be. Of course, some people have really thick hair, and others not so thick. It it seems excessive, talk to your doctor. Good luck R.!

Get your thyroid levels checked by your doctor; you may have pregnancy induced hypo-thyroidism, which is very common. If these levels are ok, boost your antioxidant intake -- lots of fruits and veggies. I tried two products that worked so well at improving my hair that I rep for them now: Pharmanex G3 antioxidant booster and the Galvanic Spa hair treatment. It worried for a little while, but I didn't have any bald patches, so I tried not to think about it. My hair is thinner now than it was "pre-baby", but I still have a full head of it. I don't know if you've got a copy or not, but the book "What to Expect When You're Expecting" was given to me when I announced I was pregnant with my first baby. I read it frequently during each pregnancy, and it put a LOT of those common fears to rest for me.
I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you start seeing bald patches.

I also had the same problem after having my daughter. I figured my hair was falling out and I was tired because of having a new baby. My daughter was about 5-6 months old and my hair was noticably thinner. My husband finally thought I should try something. I called my OBGYN and spoke to her and over the phone she said it was most likely my thyroid. It was and she put me on Synthroid.

I also used the Nioxin hair products, I couldn't believe how fast they started helping. Everytime I would have my hair done my stylist would comment on how much new hair I had.

Good luck! Don't wait to see if it gets better, ask for a thyroid test.

After I had my two girls I lost clumps of hair, and it went straight, in the shower it would clog up the drain. I didn't with my last baby, but he was a premie. Anyway I asked my hairdresser and she said it was normal and a hormone thing. My hair has always grown back in thick and cutly as always. Good luck.

Hi there,

Hair loss is perfectly normal when you have just given birth. It is due to the hormones in your body during and shortly after pregnancy. I have four boys and my hair did this with all of them. It would fall out in chunks when I was washing my hair in the shower everyday, and it was a little scary. It does eventually quit falling out, though, and even grow back. My hair is actually much thicker now than it ever was before having kids; I used to have very thin hair. No worries! :)

I have 5 children, and have had this problem after each one was born... I've also noticed that it starts falling out AFTER I stop taking the prenatal vitamins. I know it's not encouraging news... but it usually stops after a few months. Also, I bought some of the over-the-counter pre-natal vitamins, and that helps as well. GOOD LUCK!

Dear R.,
Hair loss after pregnancy is not uncommon. It happened to me and trust me when I tell you it looks worse than it really is. While you are pregnant, you don't shed your hair like you do normally (due to the hormones your body is producing). Your body basically holds on to the hair (which is why your hair is usually thicker when you're pregnant). Once you give birth and your hormone levels drop, your hair starts to fall out because your body doesn't need to hold on to it anymore. This can last well up to a year after your give birth.

I have always heard that this has to do with the hormone changes. I lost lots of hair after the birth of my first 2 kids. It seemed to happen after I stopped breasfeeding. I just had my third baby and went thru a hair loss period during the pregnancy; so far no hair loss but I am still breasfeeding.

Its annoying but in my experience will stop ibn a few months. you wont go bald, dont worry!

The only thing I can remember being told about losing hair after giving birth was that during pregnancy (and from taking prenatal vitamins) your hair grows in thicker and doesn't tend to fall out as often. I do remember my hair being very nice, as were my nails. I had a fair amount of hair loss afterward (both times), but my hair is fairly thick anyway, so there was no outward appearance that my hair was falling out, just what I was seeing in my brush each day. I don't recall how long the "extra" hair loss lasted, but I don't think it was terribly long. Not much info, I know, but that's what I can recall. Good luck.

No worries! Totally normal! (I do hair so I know what I'm talking about) You gain a lot of excess hair while you are pregnant, now it's time to come out. It can also be stress, good stress can affect your body as much as bad stress can. So no matter if you love the stress of having two kids and getting everything done or not, it's stress and can cause hair loss. anyway, if you're worried that it's more than just loss of pregnancy hair, buy this conditioner: Nioxin Scalp Therapy Conditioner. (they have a whole scalp therapy kit but the conditioner is the magic stuff, there's really no need to spend that much $$ on the shampoo too.) it's about $30 bucks for like 32 oz. Here's what I'd suggest to do with it when you get in the shower each day follow this routine: First off wet your hair, shampoo, and rinse. Put a dollop of the conditioner in your hand and really work it into your scalp spend as long as 5 minutes just massaging your scalp and working the conditioner into your hair. (the added blood flow from massage increases hair growth) Leave the conditioner in your hair until you have washed everything else and are ready to get out of the shower. Rinse with slightly cooler water and make sure to get all the conditioner out. I'd do this everyday, but if your hair tends to get oily easily do it every other day with the conditioner, but still do the massage Every DAY. let me know how it goes.

My hairdresser told me that when you are pregnant you really are not losing any hair. Your body tends to keep it which makes your hair really thick during pregnancy. After you have the baby your body and hormones allow you to lose your hair again. It is a normal process. If you are not noticing that your are balding I wouldn't worry about it and let nature take her course. If you are really concerned you could ask your doctor. I still have very thick hair and after each child I lose tons; it even seems like more when you have long hair. I wouldn't worry too much.

Congratulation! It is the changing hormones, again! It might last a while. Also, the texture of my hair changed when it did grow back.

One of the mom's mentioned thyroid, and it is one of the signs of thyroid problems, so if it does continue you should have your thyroid checked.

It is very normal, but it wouldn't hurt to have your thyroid checked out just in case, as it can also be that. The worse part will be when it all grows back in.

Actually, when you are pregnant, your hair doesn't shed as much - at least for some of us and I was the same way - so what is happening is you are just getting rid of some of the extra that has built up. I have pretty thick hair and both times I was pregnant it just got bigger and BIGGER. AFter each delivery, I had a period of significant hair shedding. I would just run my hands through it and get bunches. But my hair returned to normal relatively quickly and is the same as it always was at this point, 2 1/2 years after my last baby.

Your hair gets thicker during pregnancy and then falls out for a few months afterwards. Mine did and now it comes out at a normal rate and I don't feel like I have any less hair than I did before pregnancy. I do have new little baby hairs along my hairline that are annoying.

My understanding is that it is pretty par for the course for pregnancy and childbirth - all through my pregnancy I did not shed any hair hardly at all! I was told it will all catch up after the birth, and it certainly did. My hair was so thick again, but it has been falling out at an amazing rate! My son is now 7 months old and I can say it has certainly slowed down, finally. What they said is that because you don't lose any of that hair while pregnant, we go and make up for it now. Bummer - I really liked the thick hair!

hi, R.,

i have had the same problem, mine started years ago and i was also told it was stress. which is true, to some extent. stress does have a big play on every area of our bodies, and having babies, being sick in any way, there are alot of issues to take into consideration, but a big one that is quite common, in women into their 30's sometimes earlier, is the thyroid, usually a low thyroid production, which is refered to as hypothyroid. there are two good medicines for this issue, that you will see very quick results from. your hair will start to re grow new little baby hairs within a few weeks of starting the meds.

you will need a good doctor to help you with this issue. some doctors are not well educated as to how the thyroid hormone works and how it affects our bodies. i dont know what area you are in, but i may be able to give you some refferals to a couple doctors in the utah valley, salt lake area.

you will need to have a simple blood test to check your T-3 and T4 levels.

let me know if this helps or if i can give you more info.

Hi R.,
I just wanted to let you know that I too lost so much hair after having my son. I didn't start losing it right away, but started about the time when he was three or four months old. It was also very alarming to me, but don't worry, it does grow back! My son is eight months now and my hair has been growing back for a little over a month or so. I think that I continued to lose it for around two months, and I did lose a lot. I was told that the reason behind this is because your body has gone through so many changes recently with hormones and stuff. Plus, birth is a traumatic experience on your body. Especially if you had a c-section. You can also lose hair after major surgeries. My advice to you is keep on taking your prenatals, and buy some good hair vitamins. That's what I did and it's finally starting to come back! Good luck!

Hi R.,
Hair loss is completely normal and should stop in a couple more months. Many women grow more hair during pregnancy because of the hormonal changes, after birth the hormones change again and out comes that extra hair. I thought I would go bald with all I was losing and talked to my doctor who said not to worry, you would be amazed at how much new hair we have during the pregnancy so the amount of loss after is not to be worried about.

HI! I am a hair dresser and I will tell you that is totally normal. There are several reasons that your hair is falling out, one being that your hormones have dropped and are trying to get back to normal now. Your hair WILL grow back. If you are concerned about it there are SEVERAL hair shampoos and things on the market that can help you with that. The best one is Nioxin. Go to the person that cuts your hair and ask her if it is possible for them to get you a trial size to try it out. It gets expensive, but it slows the hair loss, and then help quicken the growth.

This is pretty normal. When I am pregnant I don't lose hardly any hair. Your hormones and body hang on to it. Then at about 4 months after I had the baby my hormones change a bit and I start losing my hair. Yes it grows back. It may feel kind of funny for a little while as it does grow back. After my first I felt like I had a buzz cut underneath my longer hair. It is perfectly normal.
