Hair Dye While Pregnant

Hi- I never, never touch hair dye while pregnant. I always figure, even if it's generally safe, why take a chance, etc. I am pg now again, and though I had no intention of dying it (and still may not), I am in two weddings this summer and my grays are abundant! I am seeking opinions on the absolutely most natural/safe ways to do it (if I do it at all).

What can I do next?

My OB/GYN said that since women have been dyeing their hair forever and no bad things have ever come of it, to go ahead and color my hair. I did, as did all the other moms I know, and our kids came to no harm! I don't believe there is any evidence (that I have seen, anyhow) to show that dyeing your hair causes any kind of harm to your baby. Keep in mind that your hair is not alive - so any dye absorbed by the hair doesn't go anywhere else (it's not sucked up into your head or anything).

I have dyed my hair with all three pergnancies and my babies are perfect. My ob said it's ok and think of it this way hairstylest(sp) don't stop coloring hair because they are prego. I also painted the nursery with 2 out of three pregnancies and againg my babies came out just fine and are 8 ,5,14months and have not one thing wrong with them, they are perfect physically and emotionaly.

I get my hair dyed and I'm prego. My hairdresser uses a lighter solution of some sort.

Get your hair highlited. Highlites don't get near your scalp, so there's no danger in the dye penetrating the scalp.

hi! i am a hair stylist and as long as you are in a well ventilated area, you can color your hair with a single process or even highlights.

here is a good link to get more info:

Yeah- file this under "old wives' tale" -- you can dye your hair while pregnant - just crack a window. If the whole ammonia thing is going to make you nervous though, use Henna as another mama suggested. If you're going blonde(r) however, it's not an option.

I never had a problem with dying my hair while I was pregnant. But if your worried then I would try a semi-permanent hair dye. If your past the 1st trimester in your pregnancy then you really should'nt have much of a problem... Good Luck!

My doc said it was fine - unless I was intending to drink the dye solution!

going darker is ok. My hair dresser does what is called a "rinse" and its totally safe and fine while prego. But she made me wait til I was in my 3rd trimester to get highlights. So see if your hair dresser can do a rinse instead of a dye to cover the grays. I think the main difference is that a rinse will gradually fade lighter as oppose to staying super dark like dye. If not, mine's all the way in Toms River- but she is the BEST! my sister goes to her from Jersey City lol. so message me if you want her info. Congrats and good luck.

Ask for highlights/lowlights where they don't touch the scalp.

I am 34 weeks pregnant and was told it was generally safe as well, but just to be sure I asked my dr. & she said it was fine just to stay in a well ventilated room .. open windows place a fan etc... :) I know my mother really gets upsett and her grey hair tends to really bother her ( even though I think it is something to be embraced and it is worn extremely well :) ...) I would not let being pregnant stop you from dying it if it dose bother you there are plenty of things you can do to make it safe. :) congratts on the baby :)

I would ask your OB to see what he/she says. I know doctors differ on whether hair dying is safe or not.

(And I think it's the fumes, not the scalp pentration that is the worry, so maybe do it outside?)

See I think god was kind to me and didn't give my greys until I was done having kids. :p

I am pretty sure, maybe google this to make sure, but I think the wash out kinds are safe even when you are pregnant.

I would keep the hair just the way it is, maybe get a cut ( a sexy style ).

Why risk your baby over what others think of your hair!

Enjoy your pregnancy.

Take care

it is safe. i mean, i wouldnt dye your hair every few weeks while preggo, but once or twice is ok. years ago it wouldnt have been as safe with all the crazy harsh chemicals the use to use. but now they are much less harsh. if it makes you feel better you can use a henna dye which is usually all natural and probably washes out after a few washes. good luck!

My SIL is a hairdresser. I asked her about this, and she said it was perfectly fine. She pointed out that she was breathing the dye and had her hands in it while she was pregnant with both boys, and they are perfectly fine.

I highlight my hair while pregnant. As many have mentioned, nothing touches your scalp when you highlight your hair, so it is as safe as can be. Your baby can't get any chemicals from the hair shaft itself.
