Hair Coloring Spin-off

Feline stroller brings up a good question. I have been contemplating coloring my brown hair. I have always kept the color natural. I have about 7 gray hairs that are coming in right at the front, near my forehead. If only the 7 come in for a while, I think I can live with that, but if more pop up here and there, I think I will want to color.

I dislike the wire texture to them. They don't always relax. But I really dislike seeing peoples roots and I am afraid I am too busy to keep a regular coloring appointment.

Ladies, have you let mother nature take over or did you color at first sight of the gray hair?

So What Happened?

Wow, I am amazed at how this question gives a perspective of you ladies.

I don't consider myself high maintenance. I get my hair cut about 4 times a year. I love it when I do because I stand out from my simple hair style. So, I love the compliments. I do the same thing with my clothing. I pretty much wear jeans and T's or tanks and slacks with a collared shirt for work and when an occasion comes up, it usually requires a shopping day. I wear flip flops into work and put my girly shoes on in the office and when the day is done, I'm back in my flip flops with my shoes slung over my back.

I did color my hair as a young adult. I did a few reddish tints and a purple tint that was jet black in dim light. Those were the early 90's. I didn't do it for long because I didn't like the up keep.

Hair is a lot of work and I usually make it part of my daily routine. No buns or pony's for me. There are only 24 hours in the day and I spend a lot of time with my kids, however, at the sight of more gray hairs, I will transition into COLOR!

I tried for about six months. It was the biggest pain in the rear ever! Never again - the money, the odors, the cycle of HAVING to color to avoid the fade out? No way. I earned every one of my silver strands. I stopped trying to pretend to be younger and decided to be proud of the experience and wisdom that gave my my "hair jewelry," a gift from my kids.

I have a handful of grey hairs as well. I just got some highlights and that camouflaged the grays quite nicely. Do not pull any of the grays. As they grow longer they will lay flat and not show as much. I had my highlights done last June and just had them done again, so not a lot of upkeep! My hair is dark brown and I got caramel highlights.

i colored for years. my blonde hair started turning gray in my 40s, and it looked to me as if it were going to be a ghastly salt-and-pepper (distinguished in a man's beard, not so much on a mom) so i miss clairol ash blonded it for a long time.
then when i hit 50 i decided to quit. best decision i ever made. the blonde is silvering beautifully, with natural platinum streaks at the temples that everyone thinks are salon-induced! and the coarser crone hair has finally given my previously thin and limp mane a wonderful body and wave it never had before.
i'm pretty unhappy with my turkey wattles and chin grooves. all the folks warbling about just 'accepting' and 'being happy' with aging over in the 'born pretty' thread made me roll my eyes. there are things i love about my 50s, but the physical effects on my face are not loved one bit.
but at least i've finally got awesome hair!

I colored, colored, colored! I started graying at a young age (late 20s) I would just highlight at that time because who could tell, gray or blond!

I'm now 50. If I didn't color, I would look 90 and its not the pretty gray mine is the ugly gray. Plus, I'm too young!

I was born a brunette BUT, I was meant to be a redhead!! So, I have had auburn hair for the last 20years. I will get hairlights some times and I very the red sometimes BUT it will ALWAYS to red!!! I have to color every 3 to 4 weeks. Red is really hard to keep but to me "I'm worth it"! I do it myself. =)

I first died my hair at age 11. My mom was cool and let me go from brown to bright red, then purple, then black, etc.

I had a few gray hairs before I got pregnant for the first time, but once I got pregnant, I just stopped coloring my hair. Two more kids later, I have a lot of silver-I'm 42. I love it. My hair is so healthy. I can't imagine going back to coloring it.

I'm going to grow old in style: the way nature intends. There is a lot of wisdom in growing old. I'm loving it!

I have brown hair that turns to a light brown in the summer. I've been getting blonde highlights and I tell my hairdresser to do them very subtle, otherwise I end up really blonde in the sun. I like them because they add texture and blend the few grays I've been noticing lately. I can also easily go 10 weeks with out touching it up.

When I had TOO MANY to pull is when I started having my hair colored. I was 39. I tried hard to get to 40 - couldn't do it.

The best hair color I've ever had and what I will ONLY have put on my hair now is Goldwell. You can google Goldwell, and it will have a place that you can click on to find a colorist who uses it. That's how I found my colorist. Not everyone uses Goldwell product because it's more complicated to use and a bit more expensive. But to me, it's VERY MUCH worth it. If a colorist is a Goldwell colorist, he or she is most likely VERY GOOD at doing color.

For what you have right now, I would not be coloring. I'd pull those 7 out with tweezers. Once you start coloring, you really need to continue coloring, or your hair won't look good. Wait until there are too many to pull out.

I colored my hair on and off from my teens to my early thirties, and when I saw the gray hairs starting to come more frequently, I actually decided to stop. I figured it would be gentler on my hair, plus I remember the first time my grandmother let her hair go to its natural color; I was 16 and grandma had gone from brownish gray to total silver in between two visits, about 4 months apart. Letting the gray come on more naturally suits me, I don't mind it. I've earned'em. :)

I've seen those women who color color color and have a white stripe around their face and neck. That just looks silly.

I think that if a woman wants to color her hair that's great too. If you think about doing some highlights in the brown hair then as you get more gray hairs the highlights will just blend them in.

I highlight my hair about 3-4 times a year. It's a dirty blond/ brown and a few gray hairs. I would have to be much worse to color my hair but alas, I may get to that state. I have a friend who colors her own every few weeks. It gives it shine and vibrancy.

Try "cellophane" hair coloring.
You don't have much gray hairs.
http://www.newhealthguide.org/Cellophane-Hair-Treatment.html
Its a good option to coloring hair.
Makes the hair real glossy.
My friend has that done. Its nice. Natural shiny looking. Not "dyed" looking.
It looks real natural and easy to upkeep. According to her.
But it is semi-permanent and washes out in several shampoos.
Don't know how much it costs.
Ammonia free. Peroxide free.

I've been getting random gray hairs ever since I was around 15 years old. :/ luckily, it's just random and I just yank them out.

I'm a redhead, and am supposed to go "silver" instead of gray when my color starts to go. It will be interesting to see if I'm lucky enough to get that. If I silver, I will likely go with it... If I go gray, you bet your hiney I'm gonna dye it!

7 will turn into 700 before you know it.

If you are high maintenance like me, getting your roots done will just be something you have to do. Once you start to color, you won't need to go very often. It's when the grey comes in like crazy that you will have have to go more and more. I used to go quarterly, now I go every 5 weeks :(

Sorry, gray sucks!!

I have light blond hair naturally, and have almost always highlighted it - not to change the color, but to add more texture. I've been doing it for years (since my early 20s). Lately I've started coloring it a little darker than my natural color. Maintenance is not a big deal - I just make sure to make my return appointment while I'm still in the salon. That way I don't have to think much about it, it just pops up on my calendar and I go in and get my color touched up.

I colored mine as soon as I got too many to pluck :)

I use a color that pretty much exactly matches my natural hair color, so it covers the gray and I don't really get roots (except on the gray strands).

I do it at home, because I don't have time to keep haircut appointments. And by calling the maker of the color I use, I found the ratio of color to developer, so in between full colorings if I just have a few grays to touch up at the roots, I mix up only a small amount of color, and apply it just where I need it. It sits on my hair for 20 min while I do the dishes or fold laundry, then I rinse it out. Easy and not too time consuming.
