The chlorine in our pool as well as our hard water has ravaged our hair. Any suggestions for a gentle clarifying shampoo & leave in conditioner? I've also heard using a deluted white vinegar mixture to get rid of buildup... Any suggestions are Greatly appreciated!! Thank You!

I really like Neutrogena anti-residue shampoo. It's a clarifyer and I try and use it once or twice a month. It's gentle and not terrible expensive.

My girlfriend just told me yesterday that she read that if you get your hair wet with fresh water BEFORE you get in the pool that keeps your hair from soaking up the chlorine.

I'm using Arbonne's Detox Hair Mask/Conditioner. I also swim everyday in a clorine pool. My hair is silky and really nice since i switched.

I highly recommend it. 45 days money back guarantee so one can't go wrong!

Go get a chemical treatment for your hair at hair cuttery, it cost about 11 dollars. It is like a deep conditioner they leave on your hair for about 10-15mins. It made my hair feel better. Good Luck. LisaM

I always showered right after the pool, light shampoo and conditioner.
My pools have been chlorinated (you can use clorox, which is cheaper...) but once looked into the saline system. Check that out. Ask also at Pinch a Penny for advice.

A friend of ours let us borrow her Redkin shampoo ($22 for shampoo & conditioner) It worked wonders for my 3 year olds hair!

I am going to try some of the natural stuff next time.

2 things have worked well for us: Wet your hair with plain water before getting into the pool and then add conditioner to your hair. I use an old spray bottle, fill with about 1/4 cup (I am guessing) and the rest water, shake and spray on after getting your hair wet. Sometimes doing just one or the other works, it depends on how bad your hair is. I would also try a leave in conditioner for after getting out of the pool. Also for a little extra kick, Sally's Beauty Supply sells a conditioning treament for $1.oo. Good luck

Hi, Lynn

I'm a swim instructor in the Orlando area, my children and grandchildren are all blondes, and have had the same problem with chlorine build up. If you wet the hair with clear water before entering the pool, the hair absorbs the fresh water and the chlorinated water can not penetrate the hair follicle. Also, after swimming, always wash the hair and I have used the "stay in" conditioner, Infusium. Just wash, towel dry and spray the Infusium in the hair, comb out and dry. It will take a lot of time to resolve the green hair once it is green, but be consistent with it. Some of the over the counter shampoos are too harsh, so avoid them, they will make the hair very dry and brittle. Cheri Chambers

PS my swim school is featured in mamasource if you would like info on lessons.

Lynn,

Something a lot of people may not even think of. Use johnsons baby shampoo. I use it a lot during the summers a lot when I was younger and in the pool a lot and never had any damage to my hair. I was in the pool daily. I had my hair cut every 2 months and the ladies in the salon always commented on how healty it was and I told them what I did everyday to my hair and they said that whatever I was doing was working. I do it even now when I go out in the water alot or even out in the sun.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Mix Equal parts baking soda and shampoo...Wash your hair thouroughly w/it and rinse...Your hair will feel real dry and course when you rinse it out, but use your conditioner right after and it will be good as new...Removes all the buildup..A hairdresser told me years ago..

We used to use Ultra Swim Shampoo when we were kids and spent our summers in the pool. If my mom bought it, trust me it could not have been expensive. It worked wonders. I have dark hair but both of my sisters have blonde hair that would get a greenish tint from chlorine. This shampoo took care of that with just one washing. I'm pretty sure you can get it at walmart or target.
I also have heard that Lorel Kids has a swim shampoo.

NEXUS line of Hair care products has a shampoo for this condition. Blonde children's hair turns green when they spend a lot of time in pools and this shampoo also helps. Ask your hairdresser is she can get it for you. Usually they only sell it to hairdressers..

Hi Lynn,

I've had the same issue this summer. I bought Rusk Sensories Clarifying shampoo (Publix) and Redken All Soft Heavy Cream super treatment for dry/brittle hair (Wal-Mart hair salon). I use it a couple of times a week. My hairdresser has drummed into my head for years how important it is to thoroughly wet my hair with tap water before getting into the pool. This helps to prevent the chlorine from penetrating the hair shaft.

Good Luck,
M.
