Hair Accessories

Hi,
I'm happy to pass along some advice I had been given for this same struggle since it's worked so great for me. I purchased a clear hanging shoe holder for the inside of my daughter's closet and I have all of the hair accessories organized by what type or color they are in each compartment. Since the individual bags are clear you can always see what you're looking for. I screwed two hooks in the inside of the door to avoid having to hang the over the door hangers. Because this is on the inside of the closet door, it's also completely out of the way.
I have 2 daughters as well, ages 5 & 7 and have accumulated hundreds of hair things....AAHH, but this has definately been a help for me!

You could use a desk organizer (normally used to seperate paperclips, staples etc). They have plastic ones at target or staples and if you are artistic, you could put your daughter's names on it with paint pens--if not artistic, you can buy cool stick on letters.

I have one of those over the door shoe organizers that I hang on the inside of my daughter's (age 8 &4) closet door. Got the idea from a friend of mine who also has 2 girls and it works wonderfully!

Hi C., my name is S.. I have Two daughters, 12 and 10, so including me, our hair stuff is every where. I went to Wegmans and bought one of those Plastic Three drawer storage thins for 12.99 (you could probably find them cheaper if you look really hard). I put the First letter of each girls name on one of each of the drawers. Now each of us has or own spot for all of are hair stuff, and they do the digging. Hope it helps good luck.

I discovered plastic drawer cubes by Spacemaker. They come in 2 drawer and 4 drawer and measure 6w x 7 1/4d x 6h. I have 2 cubes of 4 drawers and I sort my daughters hair clips ribbons..etc. beautifully in these. They also fit right on top of the toilet tank for easy access. These cubes are meant for desk organization and they are awesome for hair accessories. They are clear and you can see where everything is. They really helped me organize all the barretts, ribbons, scrunchies, clips..etc. They are available at Staples and any office supply store.

When my niece was staying with us, I bought a hard plastic case that was supposed to be use as a make up case with many compartments. This was the best thing for us, she would put her hair accessories away every evening and in the mornings it was so much easier to find things for her hair.

I have three girls and one boy and I too was tired of digging for hair accessories and my 2yr old loved to dump them all over the bathroom floor. I went to Target and I bought, what looks like a tiny filing cabinet" it has 3 shallow drawers it was in the sewing section and I put barrets in one drawer pony tails holders in another and then they also have ballet hair stuff so that used the thid drawer. For larger bows I found a make up chest that works well. I have also herd of using a small fishing tackle box. They have the small compartments on top to sort the fishing flies you could use it to match up specific barrets and ponly tails together and then the underneath could hold bows and brushes. I use the plastic gerber baby food containers for small elastics & the small tupperware containers (the disposable ones by ziplock or other brands) for barrets, ribbons etc.

We have everything just in one drawer in one of the larger 3 drawer Rubbermaid containers. If you have the shelf space you could try the small 3 drawer container. You could put headbands and clips in one, pony tail holders and rubberbands in another, and ribbons and bows in the last. Another thought for the pony tail holders is a metal, stand up paper towel holder. Then you just have to remove the ones on top to get to the lower ones.

The best way to organize hair stuff is with safty pins. You can buy lar size ones at any art and craft store and you can slide the rubberbands on them you can pin the ribbons and if you can find a large laundry safty pin hang them all on that on a towel on the back of you bathroom door. just slip the used safty pin trew the large laundry one threw the whole on the boptttom, and presto. and they are visual so you8r girls can see and choose.

How about using a cutlery organizer? But obviously instead of spoons, forks and knives, you can organize the clips, rippons and pony tail holders. I can't wait till my 12 mo has hair long enough for pretty things :)

My friend (who has 2 girls with hair) uses a little case with drawers. I think it was meant to store either craft items or fishing bait. It works well under her bathroom cabinet. Each drawer is assigned a different type of accessory. You can even split the drawers by child.

just like they have those open bins for the toys, they have a smaller 'system' that you can use for hair stuff. i USED to have one for myself, then just got lazy and threw it all into a basket and dig. as for my daughter i don't have TOO many of these things for her, so i use her jewelry box, it has 4 draws on the sides, and the clips are in 1, bands in another, then 'special' clips (like ones w/ dragonflies and other stuff in another....the 4th one has any bracelets that she may have. but since you have 2 girls, you may want to go with the small open bins, and just keep the bin high up so neither of them can get to them. makes things much easier, this way you have each type of hair accessory in it's own place (though you'll still have to 'dig' through to find a match, but at least the types will be separated.)

If you go to a fabric store, they sell plastic containers to separate yarn, string, beads etc. You can buy one of those and use that to separate your daughters hair accessories. I'm pretty sure Michaels or A.C. Moore carries them.

I came up with a way to organize hair ribbons that are barrettes or have metal clips on the back. I bought a ribbon board ( I got mine at Target)it is meant to hold photos. It has ribbon criss crossed across it. Then I hung it on the wall and clipped the barrettes on it. Also, you can also find a way to hang strips of ribbon and hang the barrettes on there. I bought a beautiful bow holder for my daughter. It is a beautifully decorated wood art piece with 3 long ribbons attached. I just have to clip the her hair bows onto the ribbons. In between the ribbon are 2 hooks for headbands. Barrettes & hair bands are in decorative buckets.

I think pottery barn kids has hair bow holders. My daughter's was cutom made, but if you are crafty you could easily do it yourself.

I have boys myself, but I remember when I was a kid I had the cutest barrette holder. It was a craft-bought item- It had a round stuffed pillow with a face painted on it (about 6-7 inches in diameter), and then it had 2 yarn "hair" braids that hung about 2 feet each on either side of the face. It was hung on my doorknob, and we would simply put our clips, holders etc on it at the end of the day. It was oh so 1980's! I think it's due for a comeback!

I know all about hair accessories! I got my daughter a compartmentalized plastic bin, like a craft one that you'd keep beads or other things in, and had her put like things together, and it truly helped! They have all different sizes with different sized compartments and even ones with handles like small luggage cases. Good luck!

Why not try one of the screw or nail organizers that are sold in the home improvement stores. There are lots of drawers and the entire unit comes in different sizes to meet your needs. If you wanted to be totally creative you could cover it in a "girlie" contact paper!

Hi! I have three girls - so hair stuff is huge deal in our house! I finally (after 6 years of it) came up with a great solution. I bought an over-the-door clear pouch shoe organizer. In each compartment I seperated hair bands, different types of head bands, scruncies (different types); there's even a couple of compartments for their play jewerly, and near the top (out of their reach) is where I keep the nail clippers and lip gloss. It makes the door colorful but a little hard to close (we don't usually keep them closed, so it works for us). Hope that helps!

HI! I have a little girl 6 and she has something in her hair everyday, so you can imagine how many hair acessories we have. Well, i went to the craft store, Michaels or AC Moore and bought, what essentially looks like giant pill organizers, and then just bought a really pretty box at Home good to store them all in. I think they are intended to store beads, not sure. WE have about 5 or 6 or them. And this way we can see what we are looking for and she can pick what she wants too. Each compartment hold two clips, depending on the size of the clips, sometimes more...It is a great way to store things!

You may need to get a variety of holders if you want everything clearly organized. I use a basket for my daughter's hair accessories and that works well for her since she loves to dump everything while searching for whatever she is looking for. I have a flexible metal circle with over lapping coated ends to hold pony/piggy tail hair ties. Linen's & Things has a great hanger that is an incomplete circle coated with non-slip that is originally for belts or scarves though works great for ribbons. Bows, clips and such can be attached to a ribbon for easy display and access. We keep our headbands separately in a decorative box/basket with larger clips that are too big to clip on a ribbon. are you familiar with the little plastic drawers made by sterilite? they are good for bubbles and stuff like that. each item can have its on draw. works out fine for me. they can sit right on the bureau. two of them should work out perfect for your problem. hope this info. helps

Hello C.! My two little girls are very BIG now (lol!) - ages 22 and 19 - so they keep track of their own hair accessories...but I also have lots so I tend to use small decorative baskets, especially nesting ones - if you go to Wally World and look in the craft section in the back, there is an entire aisle of baskets. Michaels also carries some really cool container-type things (MANY varieties) that could work. Another thing you could do is recycle old jars (like spaghetti sauce comes in) and put all of the bows in one, all the pony tail holders in another, etc. etc.

C.: I don't have girls but have neices so I feel your frustration. Go to the craft store and look for the bead organizer boxes and find one that will suit your needs and likes. You can then have your 3 year old decorate it with stickers or markers that are for plastic. Hope this helps!

The little sewing accessory boxes are inexpensive and also can be a great way to organize. They have different sized compartments and you can buy a variety of sizes. I think they have them at walmart in the craft center. I hope this helps :)

When my daughter was about 6 six years old (twenty years ago!) someone gifted her with the most adorable and functional item. The mom was an artist who created a stuffed face of a girl with hair that consisted of yarn braids that were at least 15 inches long in the same color as my daughter's hair! We clipped all of her bows and barrettes on these braids and hung it on her door which had a full length mirror on it. As for the headbands and other items, perhaps some other moms can help out! My daughter is eleven now, trust me, it doesn't end, she never seems to find what she is looking for, but that's because she doesn't put things where they belong. Anyway
it has helped somewhat to use a empty tub from diaper wipes. I use them for everything. and with the poke through top you don't have to open it every time your putting something back. It's small enough that the digging is bearable. I also use them for crayons, markers, small building blocks, legos, to hold a few toys in the van and to hold a few plastic grocery bags in the car/van also they pull right throught the top. keeping a tub of small toys in the van, makes going out super easy, esp. when eating out, cause it can be thrown right in the diaper bag. I keep a small dollar store coloring book, ssome crayons/markers, matchboxes, and such in it. I am by the way talking about for my 2yo. boy not my 11yo. girl.

I use a plastic fish tackle type box with movable dividers. I seperate the pony holders by color and use the other spots for barrettes and clips.

Sounds cheesy, but i use the little Ziplock snack bags, or sandwich bags. I put the clips in one bag, the barrettes in another, and the bands in another. Then, i put the bags in a small basket. Not the prettiest system, but it keeps them all separate and easy to find. Good luck!

I use her old toys like pacifier attachment string to hold clips and the ABC rings to hold pony tails and as for the headband I just hang it on her closet. Hope this helps.

I have two boys but the first thing that comes to mind is that canvas shoe organizer thing that hangs on the back of a closet door. Space saver and out of site once you close the closet. Just a thought.

I was just using plastic baggies - one for elastics and one for clips, until my Aunt gave me a good idea. She was giving me some of her daughters old hair clips and she gave them to me in a fishing tackle box. It was a clear tackle box that, when you unsnapped the lid, looked like a grid inside. What I mean is, instead of just being an open box, it was sectioned off into little square compartments, about 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" big each - the perfect size to fit in a couple of sets of matching hair clips. I never would have thought of this, but it is perfect. You open the box and you can see everything. No digging around in bags, trying to find two clips that match, etc. She even had them organized into colors, size, etc., so everything is easy to find. Hope this helps - it sure did for me!

Office organizers work great! You can either choose one with little drawers or one that is flat and divided into compartments, which is great to keep in a drawer. Target has several kinds, all inexpensive.

Hi, Try a clear plastic box that has partitions in it, very much like the kind used in a tool kit for nails and screws,fuses, etc. You can probably find one in Bed Bath or one of the "Hold Everything" stores in the mall or try the Container Store. Also, a small children's shoe bag with see-thru compartments that you can hang on the back of the door to your daughter's room, or on the back of a closet door works very well. Then your little girls can point out which one they want to wear each day, if you have the patience to let them choose for themselves.

I have used a clear plastic, back of door, shoe organizer...mount it on the inside of your hall closet, or her bedroom closet door (two hooks worked for me) at the top of the hall closet one I store medications and things I would not want my children into. The middle to bottom each child has a row for brush, hair detangler, hair accessories and anything else they use to keep clean, face wash and wash clothes...it works very well as long as you don't stuff the pockets. You may want to do bows in one, elastics in another, ribbons in another, headbands etc...In the girls bedrooms they have them on the back of their closet doors with underwear, socks and swim gear like goggles and caps, and suits. I saw these in REAL SIMPLE magazine and they have been a huge help in organizing here... You can get the clear ones at Walmart, not a big fan myself but even target had only the fabric ones and if you can not see through them they do not work.

they sell storage boxes in JoAnns fabrics with compartments that could work if you want to keep it separate. They do sell specific organizers in the teen jewelry stores in the malls.....

We just had a drawer.

See if clear Baggies/zip-loc type in a basket or container work better.
It is easier to find things when you can see them.
Even if you have to dig at least you can see what you are coming up with!

Hi. I use plastic desk drawer organizers - they have lots of compartments, and I can keep different items in them.

I've found that a plastic sorter (with removable sections for screws, buttons, etc.)from the home improvement store helps to keep the clips, bows and such, organized. They come in different sizes and are sleek in size.

We hang ours on the back of the bedroom door on a belt sorted by color -clips go on easily and bands wrap around the bottom ...H. this helps you to
