H1N1 Flu Shot - Shawnee,KS

I have a daugther who will be 4 in December and finally got a clean bill of health. She has received the flu shot every year and it has helped. My question to all you mothers out there, would you have your child get the H1N1 Flu shot as well as the other flu shot? My daughter already received her flu shot except the H1N1 shot. I am just skeptical since it's new and there is not a lot of research out there and has not been tested for an extended period of time.

Just need other input from you moms out - H1N1 - yes/no to the shot? Any advice good or bad. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I personally think this H1N1 flu is waaay over hiped. We will not be getting the shot(or the reg. flu shot either) and I'm 23 wks pregnant. I just don't trust these vaccines when they immediately come out.

I'm struggling with this, too. I'm due November 10, so as a third trimester expectant mom, I'm at the top of the list for the people who they want to get it, and our 2-yr-old daughter is next in line. I never get the flu vaccine, and ended up getting the nasal mist one for our daughter this year, just because she'll be around her baby sister. But I hadn't planned to get the H1N1 because of the same reasons as you. Plus, I'm concerned about possible side effects on the baby that may not show up for years. If your daughter is healthy, I think I would skip it. Here's a list of preventative measures that were recommended to me:

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or sleep).

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6.* Drink as much of warm liquids as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

for me personally, nope. I dont even get my kids the flu shot. dont just dont trust the limited time amount on the research or the H1N1 virus or on flu shots since the flu mutates every year.

Everything I've read makes me not want to get them the H1N1. We got regular flu shots this year, just because I have a newborn and this is my daughter's first year in school. My doc certainly does not recommend the h1n1 shot. Keep in mind MANY more people die from the regular flu each year in the united states than have died in the whole world from this new flu. Look on askdrsears.com, but I think that there is an H1n1 with no mercury...?

We refuse to put either shot in our bodies or our child's. My husband works with parmaceuticals daily and does trust the sterility, not to mention that the flu shots still have a level of mercury in them. In addition, they are being created in China. I don't have to remind you of their record. Our bodies were created with an immune system for a reason...to fight off germs/illness. When we continue to depend on man-made remedies to fight illness we weaken our bodies own natural ability to fight them off on their own.

sooo is there anyone on here who IS getting the shot?? personally i have a HUGE level of skepticism about this whole panic they're creating. i've even heard that they're purposefully blowing it up to be more than it is. but how do any of us know? all we know is what they tell us...so we just sit here and worry and try to ride it out...grr!personally i will be trying to keep up with the common sense precautions, but other than that i'm going to try to live my life. most likely there will not be enough vaccine anyway, and they'll charge an arm and a leg for it. good luck to us all!

I have been skeptical at first about the H1N1 shot myself. I have a three year old and I do plan on getting him the H1N1 shot and regular shot. I have already been doing some research myself on the H1N1 shot because it is so new and so far what I have found is that there are no unusual side effects, maybe just a headache and fever which is the same you would get with the regular flu shot. Its always better to be safe than sorry especially with the pandemic out there with the H1N1 flu.

Hope this helps you out a little bit.
