Gripe Water?

My ten day old son gets the hiccups ALL the time. I burp and burp and burp to no avail. He is also having some gas. I've heard gripe water is fantastic. Is he too young for it and if not, what kind is the best and where do you get it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thanks everyone! Sometimes the hiccups and gas don't bother him so I just let it go, but other times he gets really frustrated (usually during the night). I bought some gripe water yesterday and will try it out. I really appreciate everyone's suggestions. This website is great!

I never tried gripe water, I would just give my son a little bit of plain water in a bottle. For the gas, my little girl was VERY bad the first 3-4 months so I went through simethicone gas drops like crazy. They really worked for her though, made her much more comfortable. the ones I liked the best are the "Little Tummies" brand.

I don't know anything about the gripe water but when my son has gas i ues the Mylicon Drops they work great. As for huccups my 12 day old son gets them all the time too i just feed him alittle bit more untill they go away, some times he doesn't want to eat anymore so he sits hiccuping in his swing for a few minutes then i try to feed him again he will normally eat the second time.

I started gripe water about that time with my son. He had the hiccups SO bad! It relieved hi hiccups in about 3 seconds! It is so awsome! I got it at the Whole Foods store. It is in the medicine isle. I loved it..I still use it with him(he is 5 months). Adults can even use it!

Gripe water works great for the hiccups!! I used it when my daughter was little, my neighbor reccomended it to me. I found that some brands added extra's like sugar to thiers, I had the best luck going to my local health food store. They were very helpful in choosing the best brand.

not too young at all... gripe water is safe and all natural and great for fussy babies! The dosage is just about half as much for older babies. It was great for my daughter. The brand we got was called GentleCare... free of artificial flavors, colors and preservatives. You can find it at most health food stores. Good luck!

We used gripe water for hiccups, gas, and now teething for our son. It works wonders. We like the brand baby bliss.

There is nothing wrong with hiccups in babies. I had a child that had hiccups all the time. By the time she was a few months old, she stopped getting them. It's just part of normal development. I have had several friends with this same issue. They outgrow it & you really don't have to do anything to treat it in the mean time.

Our baby had bad gas the first 5 months and we would give him gas drops. I know a lot of people use the mylecon but it is pricey and we found that the generic brand at wal-mart worked just as good without breaking the bank. We tried gripe water (got it from our local health food store) and while it did nothing for his gas, it did help the hiccups. At 10 days old he can have both the gripe water and the gas drops. If you are worried about him having them you can call your pediatritions office and ask them, but our son was tiny when we started giving it to him (we asked his dr and he said it was ok) so I don't think it will hurt him.

Both of my daughters had the hiccups pretty bad in the beginning and gas to go along with it. It seems like it's pretty common and they both out grew them in a month or so. Now at 4 months I can't remember the last time my daughter had the hiccups.

Is your son uncomfortable from the gas? If not I would leave him alone. His intestines are working for the first time, it takes a bit for them to learn to do what they are supposed to do. If he is uncomfortable, bicycling his legs is a great way to get the gas out. If it doesn't help and he seems to be in pain, you can always try the gripe water. Some people swear by it.

Good luck!

Hiccups are normal in a baby. It helps them degest food. So don't worry.

P.S. Honey is poison to an infant!!!!!!

For the gas problem: There are Mylacon? Gas-X for babies also you can use a Homeopathic way also with a mixture called Catnip and Fennel it comes in liquid form and can be used right away. You can find in most health food stores and if not look for it online. The Catnip is what I use and I loved it you can give them as much as they need, and because it is herbal there are no side effects or overdosing. It starts working right away and helps release gas and makes them more comfortable. Hope this helps!
