Greenish Poopoo

My 3 month old baby has been having greenish poopoo since birth. It is also kind of watery. There were a few times he had yellow-seedy poopoo which I think is normal. What is wrong with him? Is he having diarea? I have asked my PD, but he says it is ok, probably just something from my diet. But it has been going on for too long. I don't think it is related to my diet. Does anyone have similar experience? What should I do?

What can I do next?

anytime that I was breastfeeding and ate Funyuns, the fried onion ring type chip, my daughter would have green poop. Now on the rare occasion that either of my kids get some, they have green poop. This probably is not what is causing your child's green poop but just trying to show you that you shouldn't worry too much about it. I have heard that you should only worry when it is extremely dark or white-ish.

Don't worry about the watery poop, unless he isn't wetting his diaper regularly--especially if PD said it's ok. If he stops wetting diaper on regulat basis, call doc and tell him. GOod Luck.

Hi M.,

My little one's poo started mustard yellow and turned to a bright olive green. As long as he isn't showing any signs of discomfort, he should be fine. :)

When my babies get mostly breast milk, they have mustard poop. When they get mostly formula, it's green spinach. Have you been supplementing with formula? That could be it.

I agree with all of what the other ladies have to say. Get ready for all colors of the rainbow! This is surprizing but all perfectly normal.

My soon to be 4 month old has green poopie diapers and sometimes seedie poopie. I breast feed and now I also have to supplement formula beginning 3 weeks ago. So it is really normal to see the colors/seeds. There should not be a problem unless there are no wet or poopie diapers at all. I would keep an eye on it and discuss it again at the baby's 4 month well check up with the Pediatrician. Don't stress it is okay !!

Unless your baby is exclusively formula-fed, it could be something that you're eating - dairy and gluten are common culprits.
I think what these other mommas have said is right on. I would add, though
-if you are breastfeeding, it's possible that your babe is getting too much fore-milk. In case you're unaware, fore-milk is fairly thin, like skim milk. Hind-milk is thicker, richer, almost like cream. Is your baby very gassy at all? I don't remember all the other symptoms of too much fore-milk other than green poo and gassiness beyond the norm. The solution for my two kiddos was (#1) to offer only one breast per feeding. When that didn't seem to completely take care of it, I switched to (#2) a 4-hour routine. No matter how many times my babes nursed during that 4 hours, they got the same side. That did it for us. They still got a little fore-milk with the additional feedings, but they got a lot more hind-milk with either #1 or #2.

If you'd like more experienced input or advice on bf-ing, you're local LaLeche leader can help. They do phone consults (free), so you wouldn't have to go anywhere if you didn't want to do so.
