Green Poop with a Twist

Hi, wise moms - my darling 2 month old has suffered from green poop for the past month. Just as I was starting to really freak out, I read up GP on this board and gathered that it is not something to be terribly worried about as long as baby is healthy and happy - and she is. Also found out that it was bc of my overenthusiastic milk production that makes her gag and choke every time she feeds, making her ingest too much air in between gulps, and get artificially full on foremilk and then poop green. Well here is the puzzle: she a yellow diaper in the morning (she feeds once in the middle of the night) and through the day it gets steadily greener until it is spinach green usually by the early evening. It stays green until the morning diaper again.
What could this mean? Earlier I was freaking out bc I thought that she was catching a bug or a cold through the course of the day - but that isn't it. Can anybody shed any light on this?

So What Happened?

Ok, so after the complete run around, I eliminated wheat/gluten, dairy, peanuts and coffee from my diet - and after losing 7 pounds in 3 weeks - the results are in: my little one is allergic to dairy and gluten. Possibly peanuts too, but that will be this next week's experiment. Green poopies have now turned yellow and "normal"...woo hoo! Thanks moms!

it just seems like she is able to get more milk during her later feedings, that way making her poo more of the regular yellow in the morning.
yellow is what you want, so make sure you feed her a little extra long on each side during your daytime feedings and see if you get a good result.

It's possible she has a cow's milk protein allergy. My son had greener and greener stool and finally a little blood and mucus in it. I took him to the pediatrician who recommended cutting out dairy from my diet. I had to cut out all dairy (even foods made with dairy) and after about 5-6 weeks his stool went back to mustard yellow. Here's some more info from kellymom.com: http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/food-sensitivity.html

If you do have to cut out dairy, it's not forever. By about 9-12 months, most babies outgrow the allergy and you can eat dairy again. BTW, he now loves things like cheese and yogurt now. Good luck.

If you are breastfeeding, yellow, mustardy looking poop is 100% normal.

Green poop is usully an indactor of high Iron levels. Are the poop's firm or runny? If they are firm i would not be concerned, but if you have any doubt Call your PED! ans get pice of mind.

I over-produce too... I started pumping about 1 oz before nursing her, so I knew she was getting more hind milk and less foremilk... Also, I noticed that her poop went more yellow when I stopped drinking cows milk. If I try to drink milk now she winds up with green diarrhea.

Hm, I don't know. I think if she seems fine throughout the day and night and has the requisite numbers of wet diapers, you are fine.

Sounds like foremilk....are you really confident that you are emptying your breasts when you nurse her throughout the day? Are you switching sides too often before letting baby empty one breast?

You can check with your pediatrician if you really want to.....or a lactation consultant, but she sounds normal. My son would go back and forth between green some days and yellow some days.

Is it a mucousy green? That might indicate a sensitivity to something in your diet...not as common as people think thought.

I can't imagine she's catching a bug....they can, but an exclusively breastfed baby at that age doesn't stand that much of a chance to get really sick.

My best, uneducated, guess is that it is a foremilk imbalance. Does she nurse in shorter bursts throughout the day and you switch her and maybe in the afternoon/evening she nurses longer or you are able to sit still long enough to nurse her, hence the yellow poops later?

Is it dark green or just that light green? It could just be her....that's still considered normal.

Good luck..probably all fine!

Her poop is going to change as she gets older and eats more. i would say as long as she seems happy, so go with it! I know this doesn't really explain anything, sorry. Try not to worry. Best of luck.
