My son loves spies and all that, plus anything sci-fi based. He is a science lover. He likes the Alex Ryder books--based on a teen spy that is a lot like James Bond. I know some parents frown on them as violent becaus someone is hurt or killed but I have not seen it this way and my son has really picked up his reading with these. He also loves reading any books about war times, as in actual occurrences not someone causing one.

The Fablehaven series is full of exciting adventure.
My boy is an avid reader and absolutely loved the lighthearted and corny humor of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. It got our whole family roaring with laughter when he would read it to us. It is not your most brain cell challenging of books...but it keeps your kid wanting more. Really...I would start off with these.
I do an incentive program for my kids during the summer for reading books and I read a couple classics to them. Right now I am reading Where the Red Fern Grows at night. They love to be read to...it is relaxing in the evening and puts our 4 yr old to sleep so fast every time...win, win!!
Good luck and best wishes to get your 11 yr old hooked on reading. I have an 11 yr old boy too...they are so fun!!

My son is same age and he likes books he can interact with....keeps his attention longer. Try ones like the diary of a wimpy kid diary......a book and a diary in one so he's writing as well, also check out the 2 new books from Storybuilders at

Just gave the spy one to my 11 yr old and the dog one to my 10 year old and they LOVE IT!
The other thing he might enjoy are mad libs tablets. Lots of fun templates and themes, with fill in the blanks for adjectives that helps him create his own story as he goes.

I didn't like to read either. My parents sent me to a speed reading class during the summer. My reading went from about 35 to 50 words per minute with very little comprehension to 250 to 300 words with excellent comprehension. I don't know if that is his problem or not.
I fell in love with animal, adventure, and Hardy Boys (by Franklin W. Dixon) books.
My favorite books were
Swiss Family Robinson
White Fang
Call of the Wild
and all the books by Jim Kjelgaard (Most of them are books about dogs and wolves: Snow Dog, Wild Trek, Big Red, Irish Red, Moose Country, Wolf Brother, Fire Hunter)
Mysterious Island (Jules Verne)
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. (Jules Verne)
The speed reading class enabled me to retain more of what I read and enabled me to enjoy reading.
Good luck to you and yours
