Gray Bowell Movement

My 6 month old daughter is mostly breastfed, but since she was 4 1/2 months old she has had some baby cereal or baby food every night for dinner and a formula bottle after her bath. Everything has been perfectly normal until tonight. Tonight her poopy was crayola GRAY. Not greenish or yellowish or even orangish like usual. She did not eat a gray crayon. I just want to know if this is a cause for concern. I vaguely recall her doctor saying that her stool color could be an indicator of her liver or kidney function. Since her stool is such an unnatural color should I call the on-call doctor? Or do all babies just strange color poops sometimes?

What can I do next?

A change in stool color can also be due to a viral or bacterial infection. I remember a lot of inexplicably strange colored poop in the diaper years. I, personally, wouldn't call after one movement but you have to decide what you are comfortable with. Chances are that they'll ask if she has any other symptoms and tell you to keep an eye on it.

OMG L.! I thought my daughter was the only one who experienced this. Yes, when she was about your daughters age, the same thing happened to her. It started off gray and eventually even went to a white and then eventually back to gray, then khaki and ultimatelyback to normal. Very freaky..I googled, and panicked. Called the doctor ASAP. I brought the doctor a stool sample from a recent diaper change and they ran a test. Everything looked good. They checked her for Hepatitis and that came back negative. She said it was probably a virus than ran its course. Very weird. I would call the pediatrician in the morning and explain. Also, save a diaper that has the BM in it. It will be very helpful in the long run. Good luck to you and your little girl.

I would call. My sister has always had liver issues (transplant at 15 months), and she used to have grey poops.

LOL welcome to motherhood! that is normal her digestive system is constantly changing as well as every other system in her body! I have seen a neon green colored one with my son and he had nothing green to eat that day! to me it seems that breastfed babies stool changes alot when you start adding new foods into their diet. but that's just my experinces. good luck.

You can call your doctor but probably it can wait until office hours unless you see some other worrisome signs of illness. My daughter had weird blue/black poop and it was from blueberries (she loves them). If she gets any baby food that is fruit or veggies that may be the cause. You can always keep track and see if it happens repeatedly.
