Hi,
I need a new washing machine fairly quickly!
What do you have and would you recommend the brand, and what is the cubic foot capacity?
I am thinking of either Sears Kenmore (rated by Consumer Reports) or LG
Of course, I want one that is reasonably priced - they are so expensive now...i have had my Maytag for 20 years!! But, I heard Maytag is not the same as what it used to be....
Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I want to thank everyone for taking the time to answer my question. It helped me tremendously......i wanted to ensure that i get a return on this expensive investment. I did end up buying a Kenmore, 3.9 cu.ft front loading machine.
The Sales Associate that assisted me in the Burlington Mall was great! He answered all my questions and gave me alot information...so much more informative than the Associate a the NH Pheasant Lane Mall.
Again, thanks everyone....I love mamapedia's community!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, no and NO on the LG!!! We have both the washer and dryer, not only are they expensive to buy, but very FEW techs know how to work on them and if they do, parts are VERY expensive AND you have to wait until they are shipped from China or Japan or somewhere. And they don't even work that good to begin with! So do NOT buy LG brand!!!!

I've had a Whirlpool Duet for about 6 years now and still love it. Originally, I wanted to replace my old top loader with another top loader. So glad I chose this one instead!

Take a look around & see what you like. In addition to Consumer Reports, I found epinions.com to be very, very helpful.

Good luck -- and have fun with the shopping!

The Kenmore frontloader I have is about 5 years old and works great. The only problems I have ever had stemmed from user error, lol. There is a drain filter that catches the loose things that get sucked up by the machine and when it gets full it doesn't drain properly... :( Was messy to deal with the first time b/c it took me a couple of days to figure out the problem and had a wet load of clothes to deal with while figuring it out (it was a weekend and didn't want to call for a repair without looking into it on my own first). Ended up being pretty simple to remove the front panel, access the cover to the drain filter and let everything pour out into a bucket. Found lots of stuff that should have never been in the machine to start with (hubby helps with the laundry and doesn't check pockets). Combs. Pencils. Hair clips. Pocket knife. Coins (LOTS of coins). Jewelry. Rocks. Paperclips. The thing was jammed full---no wonder it wouldn't/couldn't drain.
Other than that---no problems whatsoever. And the clothes are really clean. :)

Don't go Maytag... You heard right... they are not the same anymore...

They have cheapened all of their appliances.

I will tell you... we bought a Sears Kenmore set in 1992...... and when we sold it 2 years ago, it was still running just fine! I think we replaced the heating element in the dryer once, and something happened to the door of the dryer (it didn't turn off automatically when you opened the dryer), but it worked just fine.... We probably paid about $600 for the pair, and sold the pair for $100.. not bad!

The only reason we replaced it was that our daughter gave us her very new set (2 years old) when they moved to an apartment that already had a washer and dryer in the apartment, and they wouldn't remove those.

I replaced my 20 year old Maytag with a new Maytag and absolutely hated it. I called Lowes, where I had purchased it and they swapped it out for a GE that I like.

We recently bought a Speed Queen and I love it!

You can look at the 4 home models they sell here:

Speed Queen makes a lot of machines for coin-op laundries so they are durable!

We got a front load set from Samsung in September and I love them. they are so easy to use and have a lot of cycle options, are super quiet. We got them from Lowes when they were having a sale so we got a good deal. They are the largest ones that Samsung makes but I can't rememer the cubic foot measurements. But I can fit king size sheets along with the down alt king blanket (very bulky) in at the same time. It handles very small loads just as well as large ones. We had a whirlpool washer that was only about 6 years old and had so many problems (whirlpool and kenmore I believe are made by the same company). I would definatly get another Samsung.

I just bought a Whirlpool Cabrio last week (my 25 yr old double loader broke :( )
So far I am very pleased, and the delivery guy told me it was the washer HE was saving for, so I took that as a Good sign. I picked it because it had the largest capacity (of the available ones at Lowe's) for under $1000.

We had a nightmare with our front loading Fridgidare affinity, so when the warranty company finally gave up on making us repair it (only 3 yrs old!!!) we went on a lonnng search. I did not want another front loader, and had a budget of $500. On my own, I found a GE High Efficiency TopLoader. It has been great so far and is a large enough capacity for our family of 4. The Sears sales person really wanted to sell me a Kenmore, but they were either too small or front loading.
IMHO, consumer reports is not always right about appliances...it is often hit or miss depending on the actual one that you buy. Also, the model numbers change frequently.
Figure out what your requirements are , pick one you like and can afford and then spend the $ to buy the extended warrany. If you have issues and hold our long enough, they will cut you a check and you can get a new washer. One repair visit pays for itself!!
As one of the repairmen said, they make appliances to break not to last.

Bought the Kenmore top-loading last month after researching all different kinds. I looked and compared through consumer reports as well. It's 3.6 cubic feet, the new ones don't have an agitator so there's a ton more room in there! I went with top-load because I couldn't get over how long it took the front loaders to complete one load of laundry! But now that I have this, I am experiencing wash times anywhere from 47 (normal) to 70 (allergen) minutes. At least I can choose that, though. I would recommend the Kenmore - good luck! Also watch for the deals and "no interest for so many months" deals - that helps to ease the pain a bit! We got ours through SEARS, on sale PLUS on a day they were having an extra 15% off.
