When I was 7 I went to a month long sleep over camp (Kanakuk) and loved it! It was my camp for the next ten years and beyond!
It was "educational" in the aspect it taught me tons of neat stuff, but it wasn't a themed camp like "space camp" or "computer camp."
My 6 year old went to El Tesoro in Granbury. I liked that they had a great price point, a huge emphasis on "back to nature" and a four day option (less time away for the first time).
I would highly recommend it for a first time parent - LOL.
I think first you need to decide with your son if a day camp or overnight camp is what you want and from there, you can narrow down.
Beyond that, check out the ACA website (american camp association) they give good advice for parents to help them decide what the right experience is for their child and family.
Yes, my son is going off to my camp in Missouri this year - not a month, I can't afford it LOL) But I am so excited for him:)
Camp is the best gift a parent can give, in my opinion.

My kids have always loved Pine Cove in Tyler. It is a Christian camp and has all of the age groups separated...so your 6 year old would only be with other young kids (entering 2nd-5th grades). Then of course, his cabin would be just his grade boys, and there is a counselor that sleeps in each cabin...so very supervised! Here is the link:

My kids loved YMCA Camp Grady Spruce - kids are in age appropriate groups - lots of activities and things to learn. Christian based camp at Possum Kingdom lake.
