Good Party Idea? or Tacky?

If the point is just for the kids to have fun, and you realize you'll need to repaint, then go for it! It's a cute idea! If you think the room is going to look good when the kids are done, then no way! Also, make sure the room is really, really covered, or you will be in for a sad surprise. If you're having a lot of kids, it could get out of hand. I wouldn't expect the painting to last long, though. I think it will lose its novelty quicky with 4 yr olds. I would plan on 1/2 an hr, at the most, for the painting, but it may not last that long. Take lots of photos!

very good idea...very unique...but make sure that the kids understand the rules! Don't want to send any little Picasso's home to decorate their walls! Good Luck...let us know how it goes!

I think it sounds like fun - I bet the kids will love it. It's not like you're trying to get them to paint your house for you - you're just letting them go make a mess on the walls which is a kids dream. Have fun!

I absolutely love it!!!! I agree with what has been said already and love the idea of giving them ideas to paint with sponges, etc! I would definitely reinforce the rules that this is not allowed on any other walls and also give the parents advance notice so they can reinforce this as well. One other tip---explain to the kids that you will be painting over it, if in fact you will be, especially your own child, so that there are no tears when you have these kids over to play sometime and their artwork is not there. If you plan to keep it then it is not a big deal and I would give you the Mom of the Year Award!!! Have fun!

I think it's a great idea! Maybe if you were having your friends over for a house painting party I could see some considering it tacky (not me, I think it would be fun!), but for kids? I think they'll have a blast!

I think it's a good idea. Just give them different things to paint with like sponges, etc and explain the rules (no coloring on the walls at home, no painting each other, etc) and I think it could be fun. You can show them how to create splatters too and I'm sure they'll love it.

I love the idea, but I suggest that you organize the painting. If they just go at it, you may have a bigger mess than you are prepared for, and given a 4 year-old's attention span, the activity may not last as long as you like. Maybe you could have them listen and paint a story. For instance, if your son has a favorite book you could use that as a base for a really cool activity. Before the party, paint a very basic backdrop. If the story is Dr. Seuss, for instance, you could paint a Seuss-like plain background, just an outline. If there is a story set in a forest, paint a few trees on the wall. Then when the guests arrive, have them wear shower caps and protective covering, and read the story. After each page, they can add something they heard to the scene. Provide sponges in shapes related to the story, paintbrushes, or other things to help them illustrate the story. Just read a page at the time, and as they paint, you can talk about the story and the things that they are adding to the illustration. When you get to the end of the book, you should have a lovely scene showing the story. Take a picture of the children in front of the wall when it's done, and send them home with a print, or send the picture later with a thank-you note. Perhaps, if the book you use isn't too expensive, you could give each child his or her own copy of the book as a party favor, rather than doing a goody bag. Doing something like this would help you keep the painting under control, stimulate their imaginations, teach them a bit of cooperation as they work on the picture together, and help you to keep everyone's interest and participation going along at the same pace.
