Good Party Idea? or Tacky?
My son will be turning 4 at the end of July, and I got really fired up about a party idea that my husband thinks is "tacky"...
You know those places that do art parties, or ceramics painting parties? Well, I wanted to have a party at home, and thought of a house painting party. I have a finished basement that is unfurnished, and I was planning on changing the paint and carpeting anyway, so I was going to give the kids painter's hats, brushes, rollers, all sorts of painting supplies, and that water washable paint that crayola makes, and let them go to town on my walls. I figured what kid wouldnt love painting the walls without getting in trouble? Then take them outside, run around in the sprinklers or something, pizza, cake, ice cream, maybe a pinata, and go home. And maybe an inexpensive paint set in a gift bag. Does that sound like fun, or am I kidding myself?
So What Happened?™
I LOVE your responses, and I'm fired up about the idea again. Thanks! I'll let you know how it goes!

If the point is just for the kids to have fun, and you realize you'll need to repaint, then go for it! It's a cute idea! If you think the room is going to look good when the kids are done, then no way! Also, make sure the room is really, really covered, or you will be in for a sad surprise. If you're having a lot of kids, it could get out of hand. I wouldn't expect the painting to last long, though. I think it will lose its novelty quicky with 4 yr olds. I would plan on 1/2 an hr, at the most, for the painting, but it may not last that long. Take lots of photos!

very good idea...very unique...but make sure that the kids understand the rules! Don't want to send any little Picasso's home to decorate their walls! Good Luck...let us know how it goes!

That party sounds like great fun...can I come, too?

I think it sounds like fun - I bet the kids will love it. It's not like you're trying to get them to paint your house for you - you're just letting them go make a mess on the walls which is a kids dream. Have fun!

I absolutely love it!!!! I agree with what has been said already and love the idea of giving them ideas to paint with sponges, etc! I would definitely reinforce the rules that this is not allowed on any other walls and also give the parents advance notice so they can reinforce this as well. One other tip---explain to the kids that you will be painting over it, if in fact you will be, especially your own child, so that there are no tears when you have these kids over to play sometime and their artwork is not there. If you plan to keep it then it is not a big deal and I would give you the Mom of the Year Award!!! Have fun!

I think it's a great idea! Maybe if you were having your friends over for a house painting party I could see some considering it tacky (not me, I think it would be fun!), but for kids? I think they'll have a blast!

I think it's a good idea. Just give them different things to paint with like sponges, etc and explain the rules (no coloring on the walls at home, no painting each other, etc) and I think it could be fun. You can show them how to create splatters too and I'm sure they'll love it.
