Good Ole' Vanity: Would You Risk a Scar?

OK, mammas.

Here's a gross one, all in the name of vanity.

I've had this recurring wart (eeewww!), in the nostril of my nose. The dermatologist refused to remove it, claiming there was a chance of scarring. Instead she used liquid nitrogen to freeze it and had me follow up with Retin-A.

Well, multiple copays later, the darned thing is still there. DH insists he doesn't notice, but I do. I am self-conscious and it makes me feel downright gross, like a booger queen!!!

Would you chance having it removed? Get a second opinion?

What can I do next?

I'd rather be self conscious about a scar, then what looks like a permanent booger. Is he taller then you? That's probably why he doesn't notice the wart.

Anyway, you would probably be the only one to notice a scar. Scars are nothing.

If it's a tiny scar, I'd pick scar. I'd also suggest trying a different dermatologist. Doesn't sound like this one is doing much for you.

Have it removed. Find a dermatologist who will remove it.

I would NOT worry about a scar on the inside of my nose.

What I would worry about? If the scar would make it difficult for me to breath, then I would talk to several dermatologists and get their take on it. If the scar will block my nasal passage, then I would have a problem. Other than that? Remove it.

Good luck!

Definitely would prefer the scar over a wart. I had a friend that used Maderma on a scar that she had on her face, and it worked really well- not quickly, but well.

Oh and E S., as far as I am concerned, this is NOT vanity. If you feel self-conscious about it, take it off. I think that surgery has come such a long way that a good surgeon can do this with minimal scarring.

Good luck! Let us know what you decide to do!

Go to a plastic surgeon.

I had 2 lumps that appeared, one near my bikini line and one on my thigh. I mentioned it to my OB on a visit and he said a plastic surgeon is good for doing thigs like this because of their speciality. The plastic surgeon can send them off to make sure there is nothing wrong with the tissue.

I was in his office awake and watching as he removed both, my hubby was there chatting as well. We knew this surgeon and knew his qualities because years ago my husband had a bad car accident and some burns on his hands and you cannot tell to this day how bad it really was!!

SO, the plastic surgeon did mine. I had about a 1" incision in each, I kept them out of sunlight, applied vitamin E oil faithfully and you cannot see them now.

I bet a plastic surgeon can do a great job for you! I'd opt for a potential smallish scar vs a wart.

i would have the plastic surgeon remove it.

my daughter has this really rare birthmark that is made up of keratin in her pores instead of the normal hair follicle or sweatgland , in essence, its looks like blackheads in a way, or at least will as she gets older. its on her neck at a point where she wouldnt be able to cover it unless she wears hear hair pulled toward the front forever. of course, we dont think its a big deal but i do think if i were a young teen girl and it was any more noticable as the doctor advised it will get, i would want it gone too. we will wait and see but if it gets worse, a scar would be less eeewww as you say. being in an area where it is easily seen, we would opt for a plastic surgeon.

i know some disagree but i really dont see a problem with these types of vanity issues. a nose job or breast implants is huge, but removing a blemish with a minor procedure is just not that big of a deal imo. i think everyone has some sort of minor thing others dont notice, but is the first thing they see in the mirror. if you can easily remove it and will feel "better", what is the harm. good luck,

You're self conscious about the wart. What would be the difference? I would be less self-conscious over a scar. I'd get it taken off.

My aunt had skin cancer on the edge of the nostril on her nose. It had to be taken off. There was a scar but it was barely visible. The doctor wanted to add tissue from another site to make the scar less visible. She opted to leave it as is. If one looked really close one could see that the one nostril edge was a little less. Who looks that closely?

I suggest that a dermatologist has to emphasize the possibility of a scar because so many people are so sensitive to scars. It's your nose and your decisions. Do what you want.

Second opinion ... then have it removed if needed. If I recall correctly, when I was a kid I had one on my hand between my fingers and it had to be frozen twice before it was gone. I would risk the scar personally - how big can it be? Plus you can always get your nose peirced and put a pretty rhinestone over the scar!

I'd have it removed. A scar is just a scar. I'm covered head to toe in various scars. This does include having a few on my face/neck. I realize the vanity of having a scar on your face but I doubt anyone else would have an issue with it.

I like the answers that say try and cosmetic surgeon.. Although in your case, it's a wart, there are some people who have excess skin or protruding cartilage inside, and it seems to me, if a good cosmetic surgeon can help those people, maybe he/she can help you. you could go for a consultation.

good luck

I've had three moles taken off. One right between my eyebrows, one on the side of my nose, and one right on the "knob" in my ear. All were removed by cosmetic surgeons, because dermatologists refused to do it. They all needed very tiny stitches and I have NO scars. The cosmetic guy rolled his eyes that the dermatologist was afraid to do it, and did it in a minute. But the one time a dermatologist removed a mole on my side (because of abnormal cells) she left me with a noticeable scar. Check with your doctor about having this removed by a surgeon.

I have had three surgeries due to squamous cell carcinomas on my face. They were all referred out to a cosmetic surgeon (beautiful work, yep totally vain) or I would have been Frankenstein. It was really important to me to have the biopsies done even though they looked so minimal externally. I'm afraid of dying of melanoma.

I had a mole removed from that same location by a plastic surgeon many years ago. No scar. You can't even tell where it was.
