I have the Graco imonitor and love it. It has battery back up on the base for power outs, but is great for camping (batteries will last 4-6 hours it seems), so I can put baby to sleep in the trailer, then go enjoy the campfire without worrying. It has almost no buzz/static! You can control the volume (put on high when outside, low if inside/on your nightstand), and sound activated lights (i put in my hubby's shirt pocket at night, and can see it). At home I take the handset outside to do yardwork and it works very well. Sometimes it beeps at me for low battery, so just take care of the rechargeable battery in the handset.

I say get a video monitor! It reliefs so many fears and you can know whats really going on in there. (just b/c they are quiet doesn't mean they are asleep!) I have the one with the camera that looks like a webcam. The camera did go out on my first set though (the video but sound is still okay). My inlaws bought us another one for baby #2.

I can tell you about ours - the Fischer Price Sound and Lights monitor - it does its job but has a constant annoying buzz that drives me nuts. So if there is one that may be better for a little more $$ I'd go for it. :)

I would suggest one with 900 hrz frequency ratehr than the 2.4s becasue most phones are 2.4 which interferes with the monitor

While I can't say I've tried it yet myself (but it is on my baby registry), most people seem to give high ratings to the Sony monitor carried at Babies 'R Us. Perhaps it's worth looking into further to see if it would meet your needs?
