Hello:
I want to to continue going to grad school but I am required to retake some courses that I got a B- in, in order to continue my education (don't have the $). I was attending National Univ. in S.D. but have realized that perhaps this school isnt for me. My major is marriage and fam. therapy. I was wondering if there are any suggestions of other online education where I can get this MA degree. I decided that I wanted to stay home with my son so I quit work and have been at home with him for a year while continuing with school. Now I have to figure out the financial aspect of going back to school. So here are my questions.

1. I need extra $ and leads on grants or scholarships, private loans arn't an option considering that I am not working at this point. Any suggestions?

2. Any online school recommendations for getting a masters of psychology/counsaling MFT(I'm not interested in (Univ. of Phoneix) I.m looking into an accelerated program as I need to get back to work asap.

Last question, are there any words of wisdom for me becasue I feel like I keep running into obstacles and feel like just quitting and going back to work. However going back to school is helping stay home with my son a little longer. Please help me.. I've become severely depressed about this situation. Where do I go from here?

Hello AC,

I am majoring in the same field except I am trying to obtain my Bachelors right now and the problem that I am running into is because of the budget issues in california, grants and scholarships are no longer available. Right now I am attending a community college to finish up my GE classes and so it's relatively inexpensive ($20 per unit) and we were told that anyone who was awarded scholarships and grants would not receive them because of the budget issues. So unfortunately, private loans are the best option for my family and I and I know you stated that you wanted to stay away from those but with the way things are, it's either that or work for a company that will pay for school.

My husband attends Devry online and of course the courses there are accelerated but he's paying for those classes with student loans. I am not sure if working part time or full time for a company that will pay for your school is an option but I would look into that as well(i.e. The Art Institute pays for Masters Degrees for employees and I saw a part time job on the internet earlier this week, my sister in law works for the one in dallas and they pay for her school 100%). Unfortunately what i've come to learn very fast is that when we are trying to get our degrees, we have to do things we wouldn't normally do or don't want to do to achieve that goal and I am ok with that especially knowing at the end of the day I will have that fulfillment of obtaining my degree and accomplishing a goal.

I wish I could be of more assistance but the school funding is in such dire straits that there aren't too many options available anymore. At least in california, if you were to relocate to another state that has been hit less hard then you would be able to get grants and scholarships. Good luck in your endeavors and I hope you find everything that you are looking for. Please let me know how things go as I am also getting my degree in MFT.

The library should have the big (enourmous...last time I used it it was over 6 inches thick, and as big as a carving board) book of scholarships.

Another idea is looking for paid internships in marriage and family therapy. UCSD's career center/financial aid/student jobs should have a list of what's currently being offered. Also look in student papers/websites. Companies looking to hire part-time students will often advertise there exclusively.

I don't know if you need x # of 1000's of hours in order to be licensed in your field (so many psych type jobs DO, that I thought I'd toss it out there)...but a paid internship would count toward those hours. Especially if a % of them have to be supervised.

Hello A C,
I think it's great that you're continuing with your education! What a gift to yourself as well as your son!
I would highly recommend Walden University. It is a fully accredited online university that really caters to the previously committed (family, work, kids, etc).
I would recommend looking into Stafford loans. Often it will cover the full cost of tuition and you may even be eligible to get a refund. You won't have to pay back the loans until 6 months after graduation. It doesn't require a credit check either.
I think the programs typically last 18-24 months but I think you can apply to speed up your program though and finish faster.
Their website is: www.waldenu.edu.
Best of luck to you and definitely stick with it. It will be worth it!!
