Gliders... Do I Get a Second One?

My son is 2 1/2 and has a glider in his room that we sit in every night and read... whatever. And since adults can't sit on his toddler bed because of weight restrictions, we need to sit somewhere (and he likes to sit in it too). I'm expecting a baby girl right after Christmas and I wanted to get another glider for her room (one that will match her furniture and bedding, my son's glider matches his furniture and bedding). Daddy thinks that it doesn't make sense to get another glider. My son needs some kind of chair in his room... I thought about a beanbag chair for kids, but then the glider won't match anything in the baby's room and then that an adult will be stuck sitting on the floor. I figured that each child can have their own glider chair and it's something that they will continue to use. So I just wanted to see if other moms found it helpful to get another glider for second sibling or does the older sibling 'grow out of' glider novelty. I'm the one that does most (well, all) of the child care since I stay at home, so hubby doesn't get it. Plus I'll be breast feeding so it would be nice having a chair in my son's room especially when I sit with him before bed. I think my husband that I want stuff just to have it, which isn't the case.

Edit: the one in my son's room is a dark cherry finish with light tan cushions (and an ottoman to match) and the 2nd one I wanted is white (since all the baby's furniture will be white) with brown cushions. I saw it for $169 on WalMart's website. So it's not one of those big fancy upholstered looking chairs. I've also been using the glider to put against my son's toddler bed so he doesn't roll out. He flipped out when I tried to put one of those bed guards up, so that's out. I'm worried that he will also flip if he sees his chair in another room. He has some sensory issues, one of them being that he does not like change and if you move something of his, he is just beside himself (working with EI therapists for those problems).

What can I do next?

I loved having a glider in each of the kids bedrooms. We still have one in the boys room and every night my husband or I sits in it while reading stories. Occasionally if my youngest is sick I will hold and rock him in it. It worked for me having one in each room. My youngest babies are 15 months apart and both needed me at night, was I to take them to another room for rocking or feeding? Nopers. My first glider just bit the dust so to speak, and we moved the newer one from my daughter's room into the boys room. She was fine with ditching her chair. I am attached to the glider, very, huge parts of my life for the past 5 years have been rocking and feeding my babies in the glider.

We bought a second one on Craigslist when we had this situation. We put the nice, comfortable glider in the baby's room, and the regular rocking chair in my son's room.
So glad that we did.

Probably very few people have a glider in a child's room.
And, if there were a beanbag chair,
you might find it very difficult to get up out of while holding a sleeping baby.
If you can afford it, and because you like it,
I think it's a good idea to get another glider.
You're right about DH doesn't get it.
Would you consider moving the current glider into baby's room
and covering it with a throw that matches baby's decor?
And put one or two beanbag chairs into big brother's room?
Something about mommy needs the glider for sitting with baby
and now you are a big brother . . . .
Meanwhile, about DH . . .
sounds like the two of you could use some help in developing
clear communication techniques. This is separate from whether
you can afford a second glider. It's about you explaining reasons
and his hearing only money.

Good luck.

I have 3 kids and 3 gliders. My kids are 9, 6 & 17 months. Every one is used every single day. If you can afford to get another one I highly recommend it. When my first 2 were little I would sit in the glider in the oldest's room to nurse the youngest to sleep while my oldest fell asleep in his bed beside me.
It helped my oldest feel like he wasn't being displaced. As it was his brother was getting "his" crib, dresser/changing table, wardrobe and room. He got a new bed, dresser and room ( a bigger one) out of the deal of course. The rocking chair had become a bit of a security blanket so to speak. It was his "safe space". We originally thought of not getting a second one but I am glad we did. When we had our third it was a no brainer. We went out as soon as we knew if we were having a boy or girl and knew how we were decorating.
My boys love sitting in their gliders to read or relax. We sit in them at night still while they're winding down in bed. I don't think the "novelty" will ever wear off.

You won't use it much longer. You won't have time for the long drawn out bedtime routine.

An upholsterer can recover it with different fabric.

Not sure what a glider is...do you mean a rocker?

buy another. The price you quoted is not high... look around second hand stores or garage sales you might find one for less.

I'm all for keeping the Mama comfortable during pregnancy and after baby. We also have multiple gliders in our home.

Hi, T.:
The issue is with you and your husband coming to terms about
what it is you need.

I would suggest that you and he get to the core issue.
Just a thought.
Good luck.

I don't have gliders but rather Lazy Boy rockers, but same idea.

I did buy a second when my daughter was born, and I do not regret it. I can spend independent time with each child reading and singing. I find that we sit in my son's room (bigger chair) more, but the option is there in either room. Perhaps consider buying a chair that you could later move into your family room or something and your husband will see more value to the chair.
