So What Happened?

WOW Moms..Thanks for all the GREAT responses. I'm pretty stubborn, so yes at the end of the day I'm not really worried if anyone truly likes her name now, because I know they will love it and her when she is born. I just had a hard time trying to figure out what really sounded nice with our last name. I also wasn't looking for a "popular" name. I picked out Mackenzie Kayla 4 years ago, when I was pregnant with my son.
I have been looking into the names and found that Kayla (or Kaylee) is pretty darn popular right now. Shelby was my husbands choice. But since our son was named after him, I think I get to name this one 8-)
For now, I am still sticking with Mackenzie. I still think it can be a really strong girls name or a dainty little girl. For now I have chosen Mackenzie Katherine Leddy Kelb.....Leddy is a family name. I could still change my mind though...
Thanks again Moms!!!

I love Mackenzie Shelby, Shelby is unique and will make her be even more special. Plus my son went to school with a girl whose name is Shelby and she is so bright and amazing.

I would suprise everyone, the two of you make the final decision and announce it after she enters the world. I personally would flip it and go with Kayla MacKenzie. For both of my children we used a middle name that was a family name (one a grandparent had either as a first or middle). I think that made them feel happy inside. You won't make a wrong decision- did you look into the names meanings too?

Hi B.,
Congratulations! I have to agree with the posts that say don't go with what your family likes or doesn't like. This baby is YOURS to name. Both names are pretty, but I have to say that Mackenzie Shelby is a little more difficult to say than Mackenzie Kayla. On the other hand, how often are you going to be using her middle name? Probably not often. Whatever you decide, enjoy her. :o)

I like Mackenzie Kayla. Don't worry about what your family thinks. They'll get use to the name eventually. My son is Ramon just like his father. I didn't even like the name at first but almost two years later, my family and I couldn't imagine him with another name.

Of the two I like Mackenzie Kayla best. I think it flows better. You might look at the popularity of the name too. Not sure if that matters to you but Mackenzie is 24th on the 100 most popular names list.

Some of my fav girl names:

Wow. You are brave to ask others what they think. My husband and I always keep the name choices to ourselves because everyone has an opinion and it's not always a good opinion. Once the baby is here, no one has the nerve to say they do not like the name. I think a name should be personal between you and your husband. Who cares what anyone else thinks. But since you asked, in my opinion, I like Mackenzie Kayla.

Don't go by what your family likes or doesn't like. My daughter's name is McKenzie...she really only goes by Kenzie. I love the name! But don't pick a name based on what your family likes! She's your daughter!!!

I like the name suggested by a few - Kayla Mackenzie. It does flow better with your last name. However, there are an awful lot of Mackenzie's out there, we have a horse farm and provide lessons and have 4 or 5 Mackenzie's (not all spelled the same). I have 2 daughters and tried to name them something different and not trendy, but not way out there. There is a good website you can go to - http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/ When you find the name you want they have tabs at the top you can click on and people with that name answer questions about how they feel about their name. Good luck with your choice.

I read once that for a name to really flow nicely, there should be mixed syllables and ending sounds. For example the first name could have 3 syllables and the middle name could have 2. And then the ending sounds of the names should differ, like, "ee" and "ah". Your first choice does this, "Mack-en-zie" (3 syllables), "Kay-la" (2 syllables), and "Kelb" (1 syllable) ends that name nicely. The second choice "Mackenzie Shelby" has the right amount of syllables, but they both end with an "ee" sound. That, in my opinion, causes the name to clash. BUT this is not my child. :) Name your daughter what you like. Congrats, by the way.

Hi! Lot's of good posts here! I like McKenzie Kayla much better than Shelby. I agree w/some others that it doesn't sound as nice w/your last name. I also like Kayla McKenzie, as one suggested. The whole name just flows! I also agree, DON"T let your family make the decision for you. It's your child, you guys are the ones who have to be happy with it! Congratulations and what ever you decide, enjoy your baby girl!

Mackenzie Kayla is nicer of the two. Shelby I associate with older people for some reason ( not sure why). But that's a lot of K's. I also like Mackenzie Elizabeth, Mackenzie Olivia, Mackenzie Skylar (sounds a bit like Kayla), Mackenzie Octavia, Mackenzie Nicole, just some suggestions. Good luck, I'm sure whatever you pick will be beautiful and a perfect match for your little girl.

Hi B.,
Honest opinion - I'd go back to the drawing board for middle names. MacKenzie Kayla Kelb - too many K's, and Shelby rhymes with Kelb, not to mention, I think having both first and middle names end with that "ie" sound is nms. I think something that ends in a consonant sound (though not necessarily a consonant) like MacKenzie Grace or MacKenzie Lauren would flow better, just an opinion.
I wouldn't run names by the family if you don't want their input or opinions. Announce the baby's name when she is born.

If you and your husband like Mackenzie then that's all that matters but if you are concerned about your family liking the name too what about going with just Kynsey? I think Kynsey Shelby Kelb has a nice ring to it :-)!

Good luck,
K.

Congrats!!

Our daughter is Alexis Anne - we also thought about Amanda Lynn and Londynn Anne. Some other names we like are Helaina and Reagan.

Mackenzie is a pretty popular name right now and we know a few Kayla's as well. As others have said - it's your daughter, you pick the name YOU love!

God bless-

I like Kayla the best of your choices. I like Shelby almost as well. Mckenzie is not my personal favorite because it sounds more like a last name and is very popular these days. I would choose Kayla Shelby or another middle name. Since your last name is short and so is Kayla I might pick a longer middle name (Elizabeth, Katherine, Alexandra, etc). If you really like Makenzie it would be a good middle name with Kayla.

This is just my opinion. I picked very classic and popular names for my kids (Andrew Henry and Sarah Melissa). Henry is a family name and Sarah is after a friend. Pick what you and your husband like best and don't let other people make you crazy over it (actually the not letting other people's advise make you crazy part is good practice for once the baby is born too).

Obviously you like Mackenzie because those are the 2 choices you gave...guess what it's YOUR kid..name her what YOU want...I hate when people do that and make you feel bad...no one liked the name Jory when I named my son that..and you know what? Every year for the past 5 years now everyone loves it...so be happy...and don't worry about anyone else!!!!!!!!! Trust me they will get over it...sorry don't mean to sound snotty but you have to live with the name not anyone else.

My husband and I didn't tell anyone the names we were considering while we were pregnant, because we didn't want to hear everyone else's (negative) opinion. We were undecided on a girl's name, but were 99% sure that if we had a boy, he would be William. Well I had a boy, and guess what? He just didn't look like a "Billy" to us. You might have your heart set on a certain name and once you see your baby, you might change your mind.
I really like the name Mackenzie, but I'm not so sure on the middle names. Shelby & Kelb are "too rhyme-y." I feel like Mackenzie Kayla Kelb is just too many "K's." (I know, I had a lot of dumb excuses when my husband suggested names). But you should go with what you and your husband think is best. I refused to name my baby Alexandra (even though I LOVE that name) because there were some family members who were already coming up with nicknames that I didn't like.
There will always be someone out there who disagrees with your name choices - but they aren't living with you and raising your kids!! Pick what YOU love!!
Oh yeah, my mom and I also like to test out how a potential baby name sounds when you are yelling it (you know, when they are older and in trouble - it has to sound just right!). Good luck!!

I think you chose two sets of names that go very well with your last name. I prefer Mackenzie Kayla Kelb, probably because Shelby is also a unisex name and you are having a girl.

A few of my preferred girls names are:
Zoe
Makayla...Micaela
Sofia
Arianna
Abigail

that's about it.
Congratulations! and good luck...forget what your family thinks, they'll get used to it either way..lol

i wish we never told people the names we were thinking of when we were pregnant - because there's always gonna be people who love and hate any name! Ultimately it has to be what you and your husband feel would best fit you and what you'll be comfortable yelling out :)

We chose Elise Joy for our little girl born last month. Her twin brother is Elijah Forrest. Forrest is a family name, and Joy was chosen to represent what they mean to us after 3 years of infertility.
But their first names don't have any special meanings like their middle names - we chose just based on what we loved in the name book. We didn't want to chose names that were at the tippy top of the popular names list - so that's something to look into if you care about that at all.
Lots of people said our name choices were too matchy, but we loved each name individually so we stuck with them even though some people had negative comments. Once the baby is born most people aren't going to worry so much about the name - they'll love her no matter what and accept your choice!

Of the 2 names, I like Mackenzie Kayla better than Mackenzie Shelby. I just think it flows best.

Good luck with whatever you decide!!

Hi B.,

Congrats on your little girl. Our daughter is named after her great grandmothers on the paternal side. Her first name is Sophia , but we updated the spelling to Sofia and her Middle name is a form of Irene. I looked in a baby book. I didn't really like Irene , but then I saw that Renee was a form of Irene. So our little Miss Sofia Renee has some histort to her name. To be honest I am not a fan of Mackenize (sorry :()but I do like Kayla. And Shelby isn't bad either. Here are a couple that I thought of, but the final decision is obviously yours!Kayla Lynn Kelb, Kayla Shelby Kelb , or Shelby insert family name , some people use their maiden name for a middle name. I have heard of parents givng their child the name Shelby and giving the nick name Shelly. What ever you decide, be proud of the name because you and your husband gave it to her! Good Luck and I hope this helped!

First off, you guys need to pick a name you like and feel happy with. That said, Mackenzie is a nice name but it makes me think of Mackenzie Phillips. I am not sure if it sounds fantastic with you last name. Of the names that I like and that sound good with your last name, I like Lily and Ruby. They are both classic and feminine. I would not go with Shelby as its too similar to your last name (Shelby Kelby) and Kayla I just don't like. Good luck and let us know waht you pick.

I like the suggestion of Mackenzie Grace. Just remember that friends & relatives may just call her Mack. If you're ok with that then good.
Another option is switching first & middle names. Kayla Mackenzie Kelb makes a very pretty name. It also gives a possible nickname of KK. I have a friend with a K first & last name & has been called KK for at least the last 20 years, & prefers it around friends & family.
Just remember, It's your baby, & your baby will have to live with it for a long time.

I'm writing a story right now and the main character's name is Mackenzie which means from the fair one. I selected that name because she is one of five children in her family and all of the children have unisex names. In the storyline she is the most adventuresome and receives some interesting benefits for having such a name.

Names have meaning. Give your daughter a name she can live up to. My full name pre-marriage meant "One who is a servant to others in the heavenly meadow". And my character is one that helps others and is very peaceable.

I really like the Kynsey (but I'd spell it different-lol). I also agree that if you guys like Mackenzie, then you should go with it. Once they meet the gorgeous girl I'm sure they'll love whatever name you choose. I like Mackenzie Kayla, but I like Kenzie Shelby. I also like Kayla Shelby, if you'd want to drop the Mackenzie. Good luck in deciding!
