Gifts for Older Siblings

Any ideas on gifts for our two older children when our baby is born? We adopted our 10 yr old son and 14 yr old daughter last year and we want them to feel special when our baby is born. They are very excited about their new baby sister and I want to give them a special gift at the hospital.

What can I do next?

WHen my 2nd son was born my oldest was 9. He was excited about his new sibling but I wanted to give him a special gift that would last a lifetime. My (now ex) husband and I let him choose his new siblings middle name. Perhaps you could consider that? Let the 2 older sibs choose an appropriate middle name that means something to them...Even if Baby already has a middle name, let them pick a 2nd one. So baby has 3 names plus a last one - so what? This is a gift that literally lasts a lifetime.

When people ask my children's name I always say my 2nd son's middle name of Kyle as the one his big brother gave him...

Just a thought. :)

Warmly,
J.

At 10 and 14 years, I suggest getting them brag books, small photo albums, or key chains which they can use to show off their new baby! Also, get some t-shirts made that say "I'm the older brother" and "I'm the older sister." It will make them feel special.
Have fun with the your miracle baby and I wish you the best!

Since your 2 oldest are old enough, what comes to mind as special gifts would be something personal from you telling them how happy you are that they are the older siblings to your new child. A little booklet, maybe with pictures, that they can continue to keep as a family history that they can pass on to their children.

One of the most beautiful things I have seen in this arena was when a friend had his older daughter make the birth announcements for her baby sister. She got to make the announcement about her sister's birth. I thought this was a most thoughtful gift from the parents to the older child at this sensitive and awesome time.

Do this. Get 2 white plain T shirts in their sizes. then Buy some puffy paint. After the baby arrives Take the babys feet ink them and have each child stand next to the new baby Place the babys feet on the shirt over their hearts and make foot prints. on the T shirts then the date write on the shirt how they are the best big brother/sister. Make it special for both of them seperately. Just an IDEA. Krissy

We bought our three oldest children really good cameras. My husband and I also allowed them to pick out a name for a boy and we picked the name for a girl. When we found out we were having a girl we allowed them to change the spelling of her name and add a second middle name.

Wen I had my second child by oldest daughter was 7 and I bought a suitcase for her so she would have something to do at the hospital. I filled it with snacks, a great book called "Angel in the waters" by Regina Doman, hair stuff to look pretty for her new baby sister, A shirt that said "I am the big sister", her own disposable camera and other stuff. It really helped for her to be part of the experience. Good Luck
