Hi everyone. A friend of ours child just had surgery. My husband and I want to send him something to the hospital, but we would like to send something more fun than flowers or balloons. The child is 6 years old. I was hoping for some suggestions. And I would like to find something that can be delivered (like flowers.) Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

There's this new product call Send a Ball. The website is www.sendaball.com they will ship a boucy ball that says "Bounce Back Soon" to the little guy. They can also customize a message. They are really cute! I send them for kids birthdays or anytime a funny card would be appropriate.

Hello , my children are really in to Webkinz. You can buy them at most Hallmark stores. When my daughter was in the hospital for 5 days, my mom got her a stuffed lamb. She loved it. She could sleep with it and everything. I know that boys and girls are in to the WebKinz.Good Luck. Also, that is very thoughtful of you.

You could send a cookie bouquet. They can make them in different shapes and decorate them with icing. I received some when I had my daughter, and I loved them.

Kids love mail!!!!! You could mail or drop off a gift to the hospital yourself which consists of a brand new pillow case of a favorite character to feel more at home. Also with the pillow case, send some crayola no mess markers kits with no mess markers and finger painting. Also you can include some fruit roll ups or fruit gushers and then include some fancy playing cards like spongebob, mickey mouse, or spiderman. And don't forget some tattoos. My kids love them! Or send in cards/stickers to decorate and don't forget stamps to mail out to friends and family while in the hospital. And mail one home too so that it is received when arrived back at home. Put in some silly socks too so that the feet can be festive while at rest in the hospital. Send some garland or paper chains to decorate the hospital room or send in materials to make then to decorate the room while staying there. Good Luck!!

This may not be something you can deliver, but... when my friends Daughter was in the hospital I took her some crafty stuff, markers and stickers, she smiled for the first time in days, and was thrilled to have something to do.

I had a friend who made a gift bag with little things to keep her friend's child occupied. She put in band aids, intead of stickers since the little girl was in the hospital and band aids at home were a special treat, crayons and coloring books, and other little figures to play with or something like that from the dollar store.

My six year old loves to read, color, draw, do word searches (easy one). A travel magna doodle is a fun, lasting gift. Easy readers are fun too. (is he in first grade? Kindergarten?)

Call the hospital gift shop and see what they have-I'm sure they deliver.

My 5 yr old son was recently in the hospital for an emergency appendectomy, and although he couldn't eat anything solid for the first day, my cousin brought him a candy bouquet. It perked him right up! It consisted of a can of Dr. Pepper (which he is usually not allowed to have), along with a variety of mini candy bars, mini bags of M&M's etc. It came in EXTREMELY handy!!! We used it as bribery (I know, i know, bad mommy!) to get him to urinate after they removed his catheter, as well as many other things... when they had to draw blood, he got 5 M&M's; whenever he would try to void he would get 5 M&M's, etc... I LOVED the idea, and so did he! He still talks about the whole can of Dr. Pepper he got to have in the hospital (little bits at a time)!

I'd go to the Dollar Store and just get loads of fun things he can play with. cars, action figures, coloring books, crayons that type stuff. Instead of flowers what about a balloon bouquet I think for a small boy he'd get more enjoyment out of that, I know my son would much rather see a hhuge thing of balloons coming throught his door then flowers, or depending on what he had done and what kind of diet he is on they have cookie bouquets also, not sur where but I've seen them.

When my 8 month old was in the hospital for surgery, she was sent a cute little gift that she could play with while there. It was a cute little dog house and stuffed dog with a bone, all soft and small. And the friend who sent it purchased it by phone through the hospital gift shop, and they even added some balloons.
Hope that helps.

Hi! If he is able to eat anything (is not on a restricted diet), you could send him a cookie boquet and I think they can attach something to it (like a toy, stuffed animal, etc.)....the one we have used and received are through Cookies by Design and they usually deliver the same day you order....they are fast!

My two year old has been in and out of the hospital her entire life. Before sending food, check with his mom to find out if he can eat it (some kids are placed on diet restrictions). My suggestion would be, anything that he can do in bed...or watch from bed. Anything that will keep his attention and distract him from his recovery...a handheld game, food (if he can have it) Leggos, cars, art projects etc. In my opinion, we got too many stuffed animals! My daughter only wanted the one she brought from home...but he may be different.

Call the hospital gift shop. Many times they have baskets of markers, crayons, markers, playdoh, boardgames and such in little gift bags or baskets. They may be your best bet as they will deliver to a room. You've gotten alot of really GREAT suggestions. Hope this helps.

A couple of ideas is a bouquet of cookies from Cookies by Design, depending on what his diet is during recovery from the surgery, and it can be delivered. When my daughter was sick in the hospital she got a craft kit to make things while she was recovering. Although you would have to possibly deliver it yourself it would give the child something constructive and fun to do while he recovers. I had a friend give my daughter a kit to make a treasure box 4 years ago when she was recovering from a serious illness and she still has it and has become precious to her.
Good luck and prayers out to your friends child.

When I had my son instead of flowers my aunt brought me a basket of snack foods and it was great! Maybe you could do something like that. She just used an old easter basket with balls on it and then lined it with receiving blankets and filled it with snacks. You could even put some small toys or books in it. This would give him something to eat besides hospital food and also some things to do. This is something you would probably have to do and take to him rather than have it delivered.

Stuffed animals are a favorite of mine to send-especially really soft and huggable ones. That way if they are scared when the nurses have to give medicine or if any lab has to be done on them, they can hold tight to it and squeeze away some of the hurt.

Hi J.

I thought you had a good question so I looked into it a little. I have had a few friends who have had their children in the hospital for different reasons and I have even known children with in my extended family that have been in the hospital so I thought your idea to send a fun gift rather then flowers or balloons is great. I have always gone to the hospital and taken a gift with me or mailed something after they where home from Toys R US. I found a web site called gift.com and they have just that type of section for children of all ages. There are all kids of cool things on there just for kids that can be delivered.

So good luck and I hope your friends child is doing well.

Depending on what hospital, most hospital gift shops can do a large stuffed animal with a single balloon. That's what we sent my boss's son when he was at Children's Mercy. He loved the stuffed dog and still sleeps with it.

I don't know if you can find a place that delivers them, but when I had a friend in the hospital when I was young my parents and I would take them coloring books. It's something they can do without much motion and it takes their eyes away from the TV for a while.

You can always do balloons attached to ANYTHING! My son was in the hospital for 5 days a few years back, and he got lots of puzzle books, small games, legos...things he could do sitting in bed. One gift came attached with a baseball mug with balloons tied to the handle. I am sure if you took a gift in a gift bag to a flower/balloon shop, they would deliver it together.
