You could get her a day at the spa (if you wanted to go in with some other friends) or a massage. I know any woman would appreciate that!

People always give gag gifts for 40th birthdays but I think that is humiliating and doesn't really celebrate life or honor your friends. I think you should find something that she really likes: favorite chocolates, gift certificate for a massage, something that goes a long with one of her hobbies, etc.

I always think experiences are better than any "thing" that may end up in the back of a closet or garage sale. Tickets to a favorite show, event or music group, an afternoon of pampering at the spa etc. I appreciate books and photos. For my husband's 40th I wrote to all our family and friends and asked them for something to put in a special book for him. This could be a story, memory, photo or pearl of wisdom to share. It turned out great and we treasure this album.
Have fun and make some memories!

I bought my husband a toliet light (look them up under google). It is so when you go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, you do not have to turn on the light (because your toliet will light up). This is a wonderful gift. I love ours and we thought it was dumb until we bought one. That was last years gift to all family memebers and it was about $20 worth of fun for each family.
This years gift is lighted slippers $40.

I am turning 40 this year too...what i would love would be some hip clothes, a trip to the beauty salon for a good hair cut or mani/pedi, a massage, or something indulgent like lobster gram or good wine. I would say a gift card for a place that has fancy things just for her...not like Target (I would probably buy something for my kids), but like Victorias or some good restaurant.

Not sure if you're familiar with Arbonne products, but we have amazing anti-againg skincare. How about a cute gift basket in an over-the-hill container?

maybe not the right occassion but we did a glamour shots session. they have coupons online for free pics, free session fee. i think it cost each of us girls about 40-80 bucks depending on how many pics we each bought.

One neat idea is to make her a DVD of pictures spanning her whole life. It takes a few hours to make, but people always LOVE getting them. It's something she'd enjoy for years. A second idea would be a photo book that you can make on-line at Snapfish.com. You just upload pictures and pick out the page styles, etc. Good luck and have fun!
