Gift for 4 & 5 Year Old Girls?

My best friend is coming for a visit with her husband and kids from Australia. I only get to see her children every couple of years or so I like to buy them special gifts when I do. Could you please give me some ideas what 4 & 5 year old sisters might really enjoy receiving as gifts? I don't know what girls that age like. Living in Australia my friend often complains that they don't have the variety that can be found in the States and it takes longer for trends to get there. My first idea was maybe some Calico Critters, but I'd especially appreciate any novelty or original ideas. I'm looking to spend about $30 each give or take.

What can I do next?

Pillow pets are huge right now. They come in a variety of animals... my daughter (9 yrs) wanted and got the Panda one. They are machine washable and would even be great for the plane trip home!

Do they have Build A Bear Worshop in Australia yet? You could give them gift certificates when they get here and take them to the mall. That would be something they could do while here, so it's an outing and a gift. And they're sisters, but unique. They can personalize them to thier liking.

A lot of little girls right now are very into the "Twisted" toys - or I love giving books that are activity books as well as reading or coloring. Lastly, kids that age love to play pretent and Target has a line of play outfits, make-up (make sure mom approves) and shoes for dress up.
Good Luck!

My granddaughter started being interested in Little Pet Shop pets at that age. She's 10 and still plays with them. She was and still is playing with stuffed animals.

Another idea is to wait until they get here and take them to choose what they want.

My 4 year old girl is into dressing up a lot and lots imaginative toys and books. I completely agree about making sure it fits into their luggage. The girls could probably carry the pillow pets but it may just end up being carried by the parents. My child just got introduced with zhu zhu pets because her friends loves them but she isnt as crazy about it like her friends, and I think because she likes to read more and play dragons and dinosaurs, but she loves fairies.
But there is one thing her and her friends like are game boards. She recently just got 2 games Inchimals and Camelot Jr and both loves them. She can play by herself or have help with another. If you have Lakeshore learning centers nearby, it a great place to game boards and theyre prices are competitive too.

My 4 y.o. daughter loves Playmobil and I know they release different sets in the States then they do overseas. Popular with us are the fairies, fairy tales and school sets.

I agree with all of the ideas below. Another thing to consider is some sort of craft. For my daughter's 5th birthday a friend gave her a Hello Kitty bag that she could color in with markers. She loves the bag and uses it to carry her dance stuff in. She was extra excited to show her friends how she decorated it. She also loves painting anything, making jewelry etc.

polly pocket and my little pony are popular with that age group. some of them come as sets with a little carry case so that would also be good for the trip home. Strawberry Shortcake is coming back too, I remember playing with that set until I was pre-teen.

My daughter is turning 4 next month. We're getting her a cute nightgown and cute dresses and skirts. She loves dress up clothes and anything princess. We're also buying her a sterling silver necklace with Tinkerbell charm.

Make sure that anything you get them is sort of small. We travel frequently to Europe and often have to leave things behind that don't fit into the suitcases. As cute as Pillow Pets are, they take up about 1/2 of a suitcase, same with big teddy bears.
4- and 5-year old often like princess stuff, so any dress up items would be great. I too like the polly pockets, because they are easy to travel with.
