Getting Rid of Fridge

Updated on June 18, 2007

We have an old refridgerator in our garage that we are trying to get rid of. It doesn't work properly and we don't know how to get rid of it. We are willing to give it to anyone who might be interested, but if no one is interested, how do we go about getting rid of it? The city won't pick it up unless we empty the freon...does anyone know anything about this or how to do it?!

What can I do next?

The salvation army will come get it from you and you can get a tax deduction. I use them all the time. :)

J.,

Try contacting a resale shop of appliances in your neighborhood. Let them know it will be free to them if they come and pick it up. Good Luck!

Go to FREESCYCLE.org. We just got rid of a huge 52" non-working Projection TV. You just register for FREE in your local area and then LIST/POST your OFFER. Make sure and put OFFER: Non-working Refrigerator (Year & Brand) in the title. Then, you arrange with the person to have it picked up. That's it. So, easy. Hope this works for you.

If you're in the southern Denton County area, I think Christian Community Action will come to your house and pick it up. Here's their contact info:
http://www.ccahelps.org/Contact_us.htm
For donations, you call ###-###-####.

They sell items like that by the ton as scrap to earn money for their community service projects (such as reduced cost medical care, housing subsidies, etc.):
http://www.ccahelps.org/Stores.html (see the last item on that page about bulk pick-up)

We've gotten rid of all of our old appliances that way. We just put them out in the driveway in the morning of the day of pickup and they'll leave a tax-deductible receipt on your door.

There are a lot of charities out there who would love to receive a fridge. I suggest calling the Salvation Army; sometimes they will pick up large donations. Or you can call United Way and ask if they have any agencies that could use it. I am sure someone will jump at it. You can call United Way of Denton County at ###-###-####. I also know that Denton City County Day School never turns down a donation and the lady who runs it has a big truck.

Look in the phone book and call small local appliance and repair shops. Sometimes they are willing to come and pick the item up and cart it away for you. Naturally, they do not give you any money for it and they try to fix it for resale before trashing it, but if that doesn't bother you and you really just want it to go away, this is a good bet. We got rid of an old non-working washing machine this way and a friend got rid of an big, old non-working t.v. this way.

check out Freeman Appliances; you can find their website if you search on their name. Perhaps they would like to take your fridge for free in exchange for removing it - they might be able to fix it and resell it. Or, they may be able to remove the freon for a reasonable price. I have used them for about five years for all my rental property appliance repairs.
