I am writing this just after seeing yet another centipede (shudder) climb out of our fireplace. I swear these things are big enough to name and keep as pets. I am mostly concerned about these, but I have also seen gnat-like (sp?) insects multiplying in the bathroom (they are definitely not fruit flies). Thing is, I am pregnant and have as of late been very concerned with chemical exposure. Are there any NATURAL and safe ways to get rid of pests? Keep in mind I also have a curious toddler wandering around, as well as two cats.....

ADDED: In the grand scheme of things, I recognize bugs are small potatoes. That's why this problem is NOT stressing me out....I just appreciate all of the kind, HELPFUL suggestions. :)
they may have it at other stores, but I found it at whole foods... it's a bug spray called Orange Guard... it kills bugs and can be used around food and pets! added bonus, it smells good when you are killing those buggers! :-)

I bought the book-1001 all natural secrets to pest control. It is wonderful and I have passed on a lot of tips. I can't find anything in for centipedes but I had them and huge brown spiders. It said to use pure peppermint oil in all the corners of the house for spiders. I did and it worked. I don't have centipedes anymore so maybe it helped with them too. I did it last spring, and I still don't have spiders. The house smelled great and was inexpensive. good luck!
There is ! But I can't remember !! It might be cinnamon -- it's not a pesticide, but I think ants won't cross it . . . or try Cayenne Red Pepper. They might not like the smell of it and might not cross it--and maybe they'd stay IN the fireplace. Another other option is to light a fire in the fireplace !! :-) (but if you do, be prepared to stomp on the inferno escapees )
For the gnatlike things ? It's ugly, but it catches bugs -- fly paper. Trouble is, it might have an odor to it. If there's a way to smell it before you buy, do so, cuz smells can be obnoxious when pregnant. I suppose if it smells, you could always hang up a strip of duct tape or packing trape. It's not quite so sticky, but it might catch some of those buggers. :-)

This won't help you right now...but in the fall, find O. of those trees that drop those big, bumpy "monkey balls' and place them around your house. They (allegedly) repel most bugs for some strange reason. And they're free. Good luck!

place in cabinets , in fireplace, in corners of counters [ on tinfoil]

I know to keep bugs off of you use,avon skin so soft. I am not sure about bugs. I would go online and look it up.
