Getting Pregnant... - Story City,IA

My husband and I have decided to start trying for our second baby...finally!!! When I first got pregnant, I wasn't overweight, but I stayed at home with her and didn't exercise or anything. Needless to say, I'm now overweight. But, I am very active...I workout 2 times a day, chase my 5 year old, eat right. I'm pretty healthy. And I have just dropped 20 lbs. I know there are more complications with women who are overweight when they get pregnant, I guess I am just looking to hear from other Moms who got pregnant while being overweight. I'm not all that worried about it, I just want to know that I'm not being stupid in trying to get pregnant!

Thanks Moms!!!

I wouldn't worry about it too much as I was overweight with my second pregnancy and to start out i lost about 20-25 pounds which probably helped me out and they monitored me closely anyway with me having severe preeclampsia with my first pregnancy and I made it full term with my second baby.... good luck

There is a huge range for what is considered a healthy weight. You did not mention "how much" overweight you are, so you might be in better shape than you are giving yourself credit for. I was, by definition (weight charts) overweight when I got pregnant with my first child (I was around 165 pounds and 5'6") but my OB got really upset when I mentioned it and asked who on earth had given me the idea that I was not healthy. I lost all and more weight after the two kids and feel pretty good now, but need to get back to exercising again.

If everything else is good (blood pressure, heart rate, sugar levels, etc.) you probably will be fine. Overweight women become pregnant and have healthy babies all the time. Just keep up the exercise and healthy eating and don't put too much pressure on yourself. I think one of the bigger risks is just the delivery--there are higher rates of c-section for women who are overweight, but if you are exercising now and healthy, again, you will probably do just fine. If you are not currently experienceing any weight-related health problems (and it sounds like you are not), then getting pregnant now is probably just fine. Don't obsess too much over the number on the scale and take care of yourself. :)

I was average wieght when I had my daughter 2 1/2 yrs ago, but had trouble losing the weight. I'm now preg with #2 and due in 8 weeks! I'm considered "obese", I weighed right around 200 when I got preg. I'm more active this time and work out 3-4 times a week. I actually have remained the same weight, haven't gained anything yet, and my doctor said that's fine. They checked for diabetes early due to my weight, but nothing else is really different this time.

I am at least 50 pounds overweight. I had a very healthy pregnancy with my daughter. I only gained 9 pounds during my pregnancy. I ate healthy and exercised regularly. I had no high blood pressure as they were concerned. I delivered a wonderful baby girl naturally and 10 days overdue. I hope a success story helps you.

unless you are GROSSLY OBESE, i wouldnt worry about it. you are NOT being stupid trying to be pregnant.
think about it this way; if our entire country is "overweight" yet our population is growing, obviously there isnt anything stopping overweight people from getting pregnant, staying pregnant and having healthy children.

if you want to make a lifestyle change to become healthier and perhaps lose some weight, try this: eat fruits and veggies, WHOLE GRAINS (that means looking for the ingredient 'whole grain' as the FIRST ingredient when purchasing things like bread, using breads and rice that has higher fiber etc) and start using beans in your cooking and eating. just a can of beans such as kidney, black, or chick peas is great on a salad, either cold or warmed up. (i prefer them warm!) you can make chili with beans and not use hamberger, filling it up with peppers and even corn or other veggies.

be creative. dont think of it as "i hvae to go on a diet" but more along the lines of "i want to be healthier so im going to make a lifestyle change".

a big one is dairy; there are soy versions of things, and the vanilla flavored almond milk is very tasty (i thought it tasted like the milk left over after you eat lucky charms! LOL)
we arent really supposed to need or drink lots of milk. a small glass at a meal is probably sufficient; especially if you are eating more fruits and veggies; believe it or not, the vitamins in those are much safer and better for you than any vitamins that the milk has in it, without any animal proteins turning to bone-eating acid! drink more water. make sure to sleep for at least 2 hours BEFORE midnight. these little lifestyle changes will make a difference for you without you feeling forced to exersize a ton or deprive yourself of food. ;)

also milled flax is a great fiber; make sure to drink a lot of water with any fiber; its job is to absorb fiber! this makes you feel full sooner and longer and also makes stool softer and easier to pass; a win win in my book! :) you can sprinkle milled flax on anything; yogurt, sandwiches, cereal, whatever. too much though and you can get diarhea, so only try a teaspoon at first.

anyway, good luck. im sure that getting pregnant is no big deal. but if you really want a lifestyle change, ;) more fruits veggies whole grains and legumes! :)

I have gained huge amounts of weight every time I've weaned my sons, and am now pregnant with our third. I think the main problems they talk about have to do with delivery, and general fitness--and it sounds like you're just fine there. I am actually having a better pregnancy--I feel better, I feel less sick, and can be more active--than I did with my other two pregnancies.

I have had three children. With one I was obese. I found it very hard to get pregnant but after I did well compared to my other pregnancies, my back hurt more, I was more tired, excersising was more difficult naturally, I got more varicose veins and tons of stretch marks. My last pregnancy naturally I got none. But with the one where i was overweight I only gained 10 pounds. I lost that quickly afterwards plus a bit more. With both the normal weight ones I gained 25 pounds and it took about a year to get it all off.

I'm not going to lie it was harder when I was overweight. Plus I think my morning sickness was worse but that could have been because it was a different sex than the other two pregnancys.

And there were more tests. Two diabetes ones instead of one and can't remember if there were more besides that. Maybe more ultrasounds but who complains about that. lol

But good luck and baby dust!

As long as your healthy, your weight isn't really that much of a factor getting pregnant. It can play a factor in the development of gestational diabetes or preclampsia, but I have seen women that are incredibly in shape get both of those also. I was overweight when I got pregnant with my twins, but had just lost 40lbs. and gotten my cholesterol under control, so I was back on the healthy board. I lost all the baby weight from them, and had to go back on my cholesterol medications to get that under control afterwards. As soon as my cholesterol was down, I fell pregnant again (within 2 weeks of being off of birth control!). I have had more complications with this pregnancy, but not because of my weight. The complications I'm having are caused because I wasn't fully healed from my c/s when I became pregnant again. The main thing is that as long as your dr. says you're healthy, and you're comfortable with becoming pregnant again, there's no reason for you not to try.
Good luck to you!

Yes, there are complications to be considered when you are carrying some extra weight...but I know plenty of thin women who end up with many of the same problems. For the most part, it isn't so much how you start but rather how you take care of yourself once you get started!

I used a midwife for my pregnancy and found the level of health and nutritional counseling much superior to anything my friends were getting with their OB/GYN (not making a sweeping generalization, just my own experiences).

Exercise to your comfort level. I was WIPED OUT through my first trimester, but walked as many times a week as I could and got as much sleep as possible. When I felt better, I went back to Jazzercise and did the low-impact versions until I was 35.5 weeks...I delivered 2 weeks later.

Eat a "diabetic" diet. Lean protein, whole grains, lots of whole fruits and vegetables. Plenty of fluids--I would mix 1-2 ounces of juice with sparkling water for something a little different (grape was my favorite). Watch your sodium in prepared food...but don't restrict salt intake...it can make you retain more water. It isn't license to "eat for two"...you've already got some in reserves.

Use a low-dosage, naturally derived prenatal vitamin. There are lots out there...I used the one my midwife had readily available. It does mean that you have to take more per day, but I found that I felt better and my blood levels of certain nutrients were at the best they'd ever been.

I was carrying more extra weight than I care to admit when I got pregnant--not quite obese but certainly overweight. I lost 20 pounds during my first trimester and only gained that back during the rest of my pregnancy--that is right, I was 1/2 pound heavier on the day I went into labor as the day I got the first positive pregnancy test. I was 14 pounds lighter than that within two weeks--my daughter was 6 lbs. 7 oz. I was retaining A LOT of water...lol...right near the end.

My midwife also attended to a woman, again started out overweight, that was pregnant with twins. She gained 13 pounds during her pregnancy...and have birth to a 6 lbs. and a 7 lbs. twin! Two full size babies and so little weight gain!

I think that ACTIVE "big" girls sometimes have it easier than skinnier women when they get pregnant. We have plenty in reserve so our bodies don't go into survival, baby-growing mode. Skinny doesn't always equal healthy...and "juicy" doesn't always mean lazy or unhealthy.

i would say you're just fine in getting pregnant. if you just lost 20 pounds, i doubt the doctor will consider you overweight enough to be a risky pregnancy. One of my high school teachers a few years ago, go pregnant with her second son and was very overweight. her doctor wasn't happy with her for it, but they monitored her closely throughout, and she had a healthy boy 9 months later!

Your not being stupid at all. I unfortunatly have been over weight all my life. I have lost weight gained weight but always stayed heavy i have had three babies and been fine through all of them. I ate what i was supposed to eat, gained VERY little weight with all of my pregnancies and got and stayed active. You are at higher risk for complications being overweight but it doesnt mean that you cant have a very HEALTHY pregnancy with NO complications as long as you make the right choices. Keep doing what your doing eat right, stay active and listen to what your doctor tells you and I am sure you will be fine. By the way good for you on losing the weight...keep going and you'll be pregnant in no time. By the way I did so well with my last pregnancy that after my son was born I was 34 punds lighter than when I got pregnant. So just keep going and good luck I hope this helped.
