Hi Ladies,
My darling daughter (age 3) decided yesterday to put the gum she had been chewing into the pocket of her jeans. I have tried to no avail to get it out. I even tried putting ice on it but that hasn't worked either. If anyone has sugesstions on getting it out PLEASE let me know. This is the only pair of jeans that we have found to fit her.(She is very small). It would be a disaster if we have to throw them away. Thank you.
M.

So What Happened?

Thank you for the many responses. I looked on a website that was recommended and it said to use gasoline. I put a very small amount on a paper towel, wiped it over the gum, and it came off immediatly. However, I think I will get some goo-gone on my next trip to the store. It sounds like a great product and has to smell better than gasoline.

Have you tried putting the pants in the freezer and freezing the gum? That might allow you to pull the gum off.

HELLO M.!

Place the jeans in the freezer for a few minutes in order to freeze the gum. Then it will snap right off of the cloth. If that doesn't work, Then my second method is to use Peanut Butter. Peanut Butter works well to remove gum from hair, which will no doubt happen at least once. A 3 yr old chewing gum is not a good idea because little ones tend to either swallow it which is not digested, OR they play with it and it ends up stuck where it shouldn't be! The oils in the peanut butter change the consistency of the gum and it will slide right off of the cloth with ease. Good Luck and make a note of this trick for the time when the gum lands in the hair! Sooner or later it will happen. I dropped my gum from my mouth into my beautifully long hair when I was 12! lol....

I've used a product called Goof-Off to get gum out of my husband's Nomex firefighter uniforms because I was the one who had a piece of gum in my pocket. It went thru washer AND dryer. I put the Goof-Off onto a cotton ball and just did some one-way rubbing and it all came off. It smells bad so I also washed the clothes again afterwards. You might also try Goo-Gone. Similar stuff, but I prefer the Goof-Off. It can be found at Sutherlands and many hardware stores. It works for other things like grease, oil, permanent marker, candle wax, crayon wax, and TONS of other stains! Hope this helps!

Just let the jeans lay out for three or four days and the gum will dry out and then will break away. I found this out about 20 years ago when my daughter dropped gum down the front of her shirt and then just caught the shirt (and the gum) and held it until we could get the shirt off of her and I just laid the shirt over on the counter trying to figure out what I was going to do to get it out and forgot it for several days and when I thought about it and went back to it the gum had dried out and just broke away from the fabric (in essence, I think that's what the ice is supposed to do - to freeze it). I've heard that putting peanut butter on it works too but I don't know about that for sure. Good luck, S. (from Texas)

We have got gum all over the back of a nice dress and I thought that peanut butter or oil would make a soiled spot on it. I put the dress in a garbage bag and it has been in the freezer ever since. I would love to know how to really get it out without making it worse. Thanks, Bbeck

Kudos! Sounds like you've been teaching her not to litter! What a sweet little girl, to put her gum into her pocket instead of just throwing it onto the ground. Or she was looking ahead and wanted to save it for later. She just had to learn the practical value of keeping it in her mouth or putting it into some paper before stowing it in her pocket, is all :)

I've heard that peanut butter works for getting it out of hair. You could try that for a gum-on-clothing situation, or vegetable or olive or other kind of oil - taking care, of course, to keep the oil from getting on the jeans, but even if it does, you should be able to hand-wash that out once you've taken care of the gum part.

If nothing works to get it out, you could always just cut out the affected part of the pocket instead of throwing away the whole pair of jeans. No one will notice! If it really bothers her that she has a pocket that she can't use, you could patch it with some soft material like a handkerchief, or even replace the whole pocket this way, if you have to. If you're not comfortable with sewing, you could take it to a seamstress, who would charge probably $5 or so to do it. If part of the jeans is affected, by where in the pocket the gum is, you or the seamstress could do a cute-looking patch on the denim.

Good luck!

L.

Not sure how to get the gum out, aside from trying peanut butter, since the ice didn't work.

However, if you have tried everything, and nothing works, why not cut the pocket out of an old pair of jeans, cut the pocket out of the gummy pair, and then sew the pocket from the old jeans into the gummy pair? That is assuming that it is a front pocket.

put the pants in a ziplock bag and put in the freezer.
Once the pants have frozen, just peel the gum off of them.
Been there, done that.
Not too big of a problem.
Good luck.

Since the gum is in the pocket you might be able to rub some vegtable oil into the gum. It will totally dissolve the gum - but I do not know if it will stain the fabric. I used veg oil to get gum out of my daughter's hair. S

Hello M., Look in a "Southern Living" Magazine it sometimes has advice/articles in the back portion or check their website. If no solutions.... cut the pocket off if inside of pant; if pocket on outside of pant, sew the pocket closed. I've have to do both for yrs with my now 9yr old. :) Have a Wonderful Day! Carolc

Hey M.
Wow I think we have all had the gum experience at some point or another! Yes it is a pain to deal with! However I found something that takes the gum out of carpet and clothes! It is manufactured by a company that only produces cleaners without harsh chemicals! They are not available in the stores! Well if you do not find anything else that works I would be glad to send you a little to see if it will help! Please let me know!
Thanks

I know a million ppl have already told you to use goo gone but I just wanted to add my 2 cents. Its a great product that has amillion uses I have a bottle in the kitchen and laundry room. The down side is that it is greasy so after you use it put laundry soap on to pretreat so you don't have a huge grease spot!

You could always cut the gum out and re-sew the pocket; it may end up being a tiny pocket, but that is better than wasting an entire pair of jeans!

Peanut butter. Works like a charm. Rub it directly on the gum and it breaks it up. Wipe off with a paper towel. Will wash right off in regular wash. It also works great on hair when gum finds its way there, so you don't have to cut it out!

Ummm...this might sound simplistic, but what about just turning the jeans inside out and cutting the pocket (white part) off? You could even hand-sew it closed again, if there's enough of a pocket left to do so.
Otherwise, she could just not use that pocket..??
I don't think you could tell at all from the outside...
Hope it goes well!
