Getting Grunge Out of a Washing Machine

Hi Mamas,

My son is four years old and has a gift for getting into dirt. If he leaves preschool without being soaking wet and having a half cup of sand in his shoes I wonder what's wrong. As a result, our washing machine is getting rather dirty on the inside. I can see dirt stuck to the agitator and would love to give my machine a good cleaning. Does anyone have any good ideas for cleaning a washing machine interior that don't involve heavy chemicals?

Thanks!

M.

What can I do next?

White Vinegar!! Every once in a while, run it with nothing in it but a cup of white vinegar & hot water, that should help. You can do the same thing with bleach, too. I read somewhere that if you add a cup of white vinegar to the wash water, it really boosts the cleaning power too.

Try adding to your wash baking soda and vinegar with your laundry soap, you will be amazed at how clean it is, I use it every time I run the washer. S.

The technicans told me that just to run a load with no clothes with hot water and soap.

I would say vinegar and baking soda. Baking soda works wonders on my sink, I use it instead of harsh abrasive chemicals like soft scrub. It's cheap too and most importantly for me it is ALL NATURAL. If you dont want to get in there and scrub your washer, then try adding some rags to the wash and run vinegar and/or baking soda thru a wash cycle the rags may help scrub off the gunk. Good luck!

Hi M.,
I am a mother of 58 been there and married to an Appliance Technician who had me use Dishwasher Soap (Cascade) with a Hot wash cycle, it is safe for your dishes so you can believe it is safe for the washer and the kids.
Good Luck and God Bless all you MaMas that do it full time. Being a Mom is the one thing I miss most now that my Baby is 28.

Run the rinse cycle with half a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide. You can use it as a healthy alternative to Bleach. It's a marvelous cleaner and totally harmless. You can even swish it around your mouth to get your teeth a little whiter! Good luck.

Try running the machine with vinegar in the water! (Also, I shopped for pants/shorts without pockets or sewed them shut.) Just wait until he's older and leaves mashed cookies, pens, chapstick and other really weird stuff in his pockets!

Hi M., this is a new one. Boy's do love the dirt. Try using bleech or vinnergar in you machine and run it through a wash cycle with no clothes, and then if that works, try wipping it out after e very load you do pf your sons clothes so the dirt does not build up. J.
