Gestational Sac Is Measuring Larger than It Should Be

Hi Mamas,

I just have a quick question: I found out that I am pregnant on the 23rd of November, 6 days before my period was due. So I went in for an early ultrasound at 4 weeks, 2 days, according to my last period. My Doc said the sac was measuring at 7 weeks 4 days, and my hcg level was higher that average. I'm wondering if any of you ladies have ever had this, and what came of it, if you did. We conceived fraternal twins in May 2007, and I'm just wondering if that is what is going on this time??!!! I have another ultrasound scheduled for the 19th of this month, and I'm soooo anxious, and excited! Any experience would be appreciated!

Thanks guys!

K.

Oh, my! Twins? Double blessings!

The first thing that came to mind for me is that you may have twins in the making. However, it could be that you just have your dates off and you are further along than expected. :)

Hi K.,

My sister is a member of mamasource and sent this to me as soon as she read it thinking that I may be able to help you. My husband and I of 8.5 years found out that we were pregnant wih our first in September. Being a fraternal twin and having many twins in our family, the first question we had was how soon can we find out how many were in there. My hcg levels came back high, so they became curious as well. We had our first ultra sound at 6 weeks and only 1 baby, but a large placenta. My hcg levels continued to rise and the baby continued to grow and develop normally, but they remained worried about the levels and my placenta. I began showing very early and was VERY, VERY sick. At 12 weeks (5 weeks ago tomorrow), we lost our little baby. The pathology report came back confirming a partial molar pregnancy.
I am not trying to scare you...in fact, this could easily NOT be what you have as it is very rare. But when we were going through this, we asked everyone and everywhere if anyone had any advice and never got any...I honestly believe it would have helped to have known something...anything. It may at least give you something to look into and ask your doctor about. It is rare (less than 1% of pregnancies) so some doctors may not notice it or look for it. In fact, many doctors have never seen it, only heard about it.
I pray that you have nothing like this, but wanted you to know.

Good luck,

M.

Hello!
I wouldn't worry about it. You proably ovulate early in your cycle and therefore, got pregnant earlier. It's very normal. Going by your last period to determine how far along you are is very innaccurate because it does not tell you when you ovulated/conceived. Many women ovulate at different times and so the "estimated due date" is just that, an estimate. It can be off by weeks!

Sincerely,
J.

It could be that you are further along than you think. Some women have a "period" and the calculation is off. I'm sure now that's what happened with my 2nd pregnancy. My due date was set for July 10th based on my 'last period' and was induced on June 27th,(Tried for a VBAC so they induced "early")and had a 10.4lb baby. The doctor even said he looked past due. Hopefully that is the case with you. Or that you are pregnant with viable twins. Congratulations and prayers are included.
