Hi Mom's!! I just recently found out (week 33) that I have gestational diabetes. I didn't get my screening at 28 weeks like normal so we are late in catching this. I am worried that there might be health risks to the baby. Any other moms out there that were diagnosed late that can ease my fears or offer any advice? The baby is measuring big so I am worried that the delivery will be c-section.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice.... I didn't get my screening at 28 weeks because they did it at 24 and it came back negative but, because the baby was getting so big, she wanted to do the screening again which of course, came back positive. Yes, I saw a dietician and I am testing my glucose levels 4 times a day and have cut my carb intake considerably. I seem to have my sugars in the recommended ranges, I was just concerend about the last few weeks and wondering that with it not being managed, the diabetes could somehow put my LO at risk. The dieticican didn't seem concerend, but of course, as a mother you worry!

My first and third measured big and my second mesearued small. I had gestational diabetes with my third. I was testing my levels 3-4 times a day, watching my carbs and sugars. With that I was able to keep in under control too. Don't worry about a c-section. If its recommended it may be best for you and baby. I have had three c-sections that all went well. Good luck.

my babies always measure large but my doc insists that your previous pregnancies are much more accurate in indicating size than an ultrasound, even when done in the second trimester. My ultrasound tech made a big stink of how big this baby is, and questioned my due date (which can't be off). Sure I have big babies, biggest was 8'14, but nothing that means an instant c-section. I would hope they set you up with a nutritionist, watch your diet really carefully and try not to stress. I should have been treated with baby number 4, and we missed it for other reasons, and everything was perfectly fine, I just took my test today with baby number 5, so we will see.

I was never diagnosed with my first pregnancy! I was borderline, but should have been treated. I didn't find out until my Dr. was looking over my records during my second pregnancy and asked about my gestational diabetes. My child was large, almost 9 lbs but I'm only 4'11, I had a vacuum delivery, I was miserable and had severe swelling which caused major carpal tunnel rendering my hands and wrists non-functioning for almost 2 months postpartum.

But, once you catch it, you can begin to take care of it. You still have several weeks to regulate it with diet, exercise and the like. Lots of very helpful information here:
