Gel Nails - Cortlandt Manor,NY

So I get my nails done every week and the lady at the nail salon suggested doing gel nails since they will last two weeks without chipping. I don't have very long nails - but I do have nice nails and in fact, they are my best feature! So I am wondering about this stuff. Will it harm my nails? And will it make my nails look thick and fake? I hate the look of fake nails.

Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, Moms!! I think I will just stick to basic nail polish. I appreciate the advise.

I know a lot of ladies who do shellac nail polish and absolutely rave about it lasting 2 weeks or longer.

This article has some good info:

You should also know that the UV lights used for gels, acrylics etc. are being looked into for a link to skin cancer. Based on that and the link above, if you have nice nails then I wouldn't risk drying them out and destroying them with this.

i have awful nails so always wear acrylics (although i know they'll have to come off at some point and can't imagine what it'll be like.) i got gels once and didn't like them at all. they looked very nice at first, but they were a nightmare to get off the next time, and cost more.
if you have great nails i wouldn't mess with them at all. i envy you!

Well I wouldn't do the gel nails that are basically like acrylics without the extended nail, they have to rip your nail up to get the gel to adhere.

But I think you are talking about these gel polishes they are pushing in salons these days. I've always declined the offer since the regular polish lasts me a good long time (I only get color on my toes :-) )

My mom got them and although they WERE beautiful for a couple of weeks (did not look thick or fake, just painted), when she went to have the polish changed her nails had definitely been effected underneath. She got them a second time and by the time she had that color removed, her nails were in pretty bad shape. :-(

If you have nice nails, I'd pass. If they're your best feature, just leave well enough alone and enjoy your nails as they are.

No, the gel lasts longer. I think they have gel polish they can apply on top of your own nails. A few of my coworkers have done it and they like it. It is gel polish on top of your own nails so it does not look thick.

My stepdaughter got it done and hated it. They felt weird to her and didn't last as long as claimed. She was chipping in just a few days. They looked fine, but she says she won't get them again.

uh uh. i hated the gel nails. it takes longer to do initially, and the soak off and removal is harsh, time consuming and wreaked havoc with my nails. i will never ever do it again. neither should you.

oh, and it does make your nails look thicker. maybe not as fake as acrylics and such, but not like a nice, clean manicure the old fashioned way. skip it.

I have been doing gels for a while now and I love them. It feels lighter then the other stuff. They are NOT thick and DO NOT look fake. They DO NOT turn yellow like the acrylic. I am able to go 4 or 5 weeks before I have to get them done (which I love that). My nail salon now offers the gel in colors which is pretty cool. It doesn't chip off like nail polish does. My only thing is the others that posted, the ppl that did their nails didn't know what they are doing. I have only had they break once. And that was because I tried to open a door that was frozen and my nail broke. It doesn't take that long to do. I am there for about 45 minutes. I used to get the pink and white and that would take over an hour to do. My nails look natural and I always get alot of comments about them.

If it's tips they look fake and ruin your nails underneath. If you have nice nails just have the salon use your polish and you can fix chips yourself.
If it's a new kind of polish it's worth a try.

I have done the gel a few times. I had nice nails but now after doing the gel I find my nails weaker and have mor ridges. They file you nails which makes your nail thiner. I think it is good for a long vacation or trip, but just to have polish last you should just get a polish change. It turns out to cost more for gel if you do all calculations for removal too.

My friend's mother owns a nail salon, and she does not recommend prolonged use of gel nails since they WILL damage your existing nails. She only recommends them if you are going away for vacation or business or know you will not be able to make it to the salon for a couple of weeks. Since you have beautiful natural nails, I would definitely stay away from them. But I have seen them, and they are gorgeous. They do you not look thick or fake at all. So perhaps you could do them every once in a while. Personally, I wouldn't give up my weekly spa time - that sounds like a wonderful luxury to me!!
