Gassy Foods
I am looking to start my daughter on some fruits and veggies. What are some not so gassy foods. She already gets cereal in her bottle due to reflux. I tried oatmeal and think she has an allergy to that so I am moving on to fruits and veggies with the dr's ok. I gave her some squash and she loved it and did great but it gave her some extra gas and thats something no one needs. Are there any foods that anyone has found to be particularly gassy and others that are not so much?? Thanks for any advice.

My son is 3 months and 3 weeks old. As of this week he has been eating all sorts of stuff. Pears and cereal, squash, and sweet potatoes. All of these seemed to me to be comfortable for him.
I give him a reasonable amount then his 7 oz formula.
I have been told not to go for banannas yet, that might make him constipateds, and don't give him mixed foods yet. I plan to add instant mashed potatoes made with water this week. Still avoid that cows milk. Cereal I give just a little of, I think it makes them constipated / gassy.

Hi T.! I would try bananas for the first fruit they are easy to digest and not so gassy. As well the same goes for apples and pears. As for veggies we had same gassy issue with my son and it seemed to be the orange ones that were the culprits. Try peas and green beans and see if it makes it any better. Also, just to inform you that sometimes no matter what you give them they are gassy. Some mylocon drops should help out. I think it's the texture and the air between bites more then the food sometimes. Good luck!

I agree with the last resonse you had gotten, my daughter had gas and she had many problems at first switching over from the bottle to jar baby food, I actually did apples mixed with bananas from gerber she grew very fond of but there are drops you can but to give her which will relieve her gas....I know walmart sells it but there are like 3 different brands, after that I actually started smashing her food up natural food so it had no preservatives .....which worked, I also smashed cerrioes in her bottle too....but if you want to yby from the box try the rice cereals hope I helped!

Don't know which are particularly non gassy, and I'm no expert in the field, but one thing's for sure: spinach, now that's SUPER gassy, so steer clear of that one! Not that that'd be among the very first foods you'd try anyway, but still....

I am sure you have figured out that most of the first foods will all have some kind of effect on your babys system, just make sure to try the same food for 2-3 days, even just half a jar each day will decrease the gas until you know what effects it has on your baby.

I can't give you any advise on what might be all time good, but I can give you one warning, my experience...
STAY AWAY FROM APPLESAUCE!! If you are worried about gas or the runs, that will cause it. Most people think to start applesauce because it has always been the first food, but what doesn’t realize is that apples are a natural diarrheatic. If you do give it, do it in moderation, real moderation.

Depending on her system, I would lean toward fruits (except bananas) as they tend to be less gassy than veggies. Stay away from extremely starchy things (potatoes and corn and others). Maybe talk to a nutritionist?

After years of working with infants, here is what I would suggest: pears, then applesauce, then peaches, then peas, then green beans. Go from there. That's a pretty standard progression, I think. Not sure about the gas issue but I think any new food is going to affect her system a little. If the gas is really bothersome, talk to your pediatrician and you may be told to try gas drops.
