G-diaper, Anyone?

I'm going to have my second daughter soon and am considering the G-Diaper as an alternative to disposables. If you love 'em or hate 'em, I'd love to hear why. How are they with leaks, messy poops, etc? And do they back up the plumbing at all? Any other products I should consider that are disposable, yet biodegradable?
Thanks so much!

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who replied! You all gave great advice and it seems that the g-diaper isn't going to be the right choice for us. With the expense, flushability (or not) and leak factor, I can't see managing them and the two kids. I really appreciate all the time you all took to respond.
Cheers!

I used the g-diaper and didn't like it. I would recommend getting all-in-one cloth diapers, which are simple to use (even the laundry part is easy) and you can use biodegradable liners for easy clean-ups after poops.

I'm using g-diapers with my little boy, and have for his whole 14 months. I like them. Yes, disposables are a little easier, but then plastic and human waste go into landfill. This way waste goes into the waste stream. And we don't have the problem of washing cloth diapers and all the water and energy that goes into that. As for leaks... he will sometimes get his cloth cover, and therefore his clothes, wet if we don't position it right, or if we go too long between changes. And sometimes we get a little poop on the cover, so it has to go in the wash. I use 5 cloth covers, and that lets me keep one upstairs where he sleeps, one in the diaper bag, one in the wash, and two to use during the day. I've been quite happy with them, and I'm hoping we don't outgrow them too quickly - we're on the largest size right now. As for plumbing, our toilets handle them fine, but my parents' toilets don't. But don't try to flush two at a time. :-)

I have some G-diapers that were given to me by another mom. They do leak a little bit, and I only have two of the outer fabric piece, so I am constantly washing them. Also, poop gets into the inserts and seems to stain them (my baby is breastfed, so it's the bright yellow poop color)... but still, I have to say... I use them around the house as much as possible because I love the fact that they are flushable. We have been flushing them with no problems. But you have to remember to tear them open and empty out the insides first! My husband didn't realize this, and threw the entire thing in the toilet, and it was not a pretty sight when he went to flush it down...

hi~ we use cloth diapers at home and the g-diapers when we travel. we found that the g-diapers are super messy for poo poo and that they can leak if you don't change the liners after about two pees. we are doing the Natural Infant Hygiene, so we rarely change poopy diapers and the g-diapers seem to do well as an alternative to the cloth diaper. something i especially like about the g-diaper is that you can compost the inside of the pee-only liners. (in Oakland we put them in the green trash can.)

I LOVED the idea of the gDiaper, but the reality stinks! I love the flushable, but it messed with the plumbing and caused a back-up and is also exceedingly messy when you're trying to take care of a poopy diaper. The liner bunches up, which means if your baby poops, it gets all over the plastic liner. I found that bleach gets the majority of the staining out, but it's a pain in the butt to have to wash the cover EVERY time there's a leak. And I have to agree with another reply... it's EXPENSIVE! It's $52 for a case of refills, which is the equivalent to a $20 case of diapers!!!! Not to mention, the covers themselves, if not bought as part of a starter kit, are $17 apiece.

I love the idea, but there's got to be something better.

We used them at night for the first few months of my son's life. We cloth diapered during the day. I wouldn't recommend them. They are pricey and require a fair amount of maintenance. Plus, even with only one diaper per day, they started to mess with our plumbing. They often did not go down with one flush. I highly recommend bumGenius all in one cloth diapers if you want an easier cloth diapering option...

thanks for asking. I was wondering the same thing myself. I currently use disposables and was considering G-diapers (I have a 2yr old and 4 month old). Unfortunately, this hasn't really answered my question. What did you decide?

We G-dipe and I am just about to need the next size up and am trying to decide whether to stick with them or move to an all-in-one cloth diaper like Bum Genius or Fuzzi Bunz as soon as her poops firm up.

Basically, we like them but the inserts are starting to get a bit pricey and with as much as we are washing the liners and g pants I am starting to consider just committing to cloth.

So here's the deal. Infant poops (my daughter is 10 weeks old) are a mess 9 times out of 10. They don't leak but they get on the liner and often the pant too and if you didn't change fast, might make a mess. We only have 4 g-pants so that makes laundry add up.

I've only had one leaky pee diaper and that was really just cuz we forgot she wasn't in a disposable and went like 4-5 hours...oops! We switch to disposables for overnight since our little one sleeps 8-10 hour stretches or when we are going out for long trips where we know it won't be convenient to change her every 2-3 hours.

We really only flush the poopy ones, and have just been tossing the pee ones because they do take awhile to "swish" apart and it has backed up our toilet a couple times.

Overall we like them. They are crazy cute on her little tush and neither my hubbie or I mind the few extra steps they take and we feel really good about our small effort to reduce the number of disposables we are using by more then half.

Hi J.,

I used G-diapers for a while and have stopped. I have a little boy and as much as I tried to make sure it was placed correctly, it was would leak. They are super cute and I loved the fact that they are flushable, but the leaking drove me crazy. In order to avoid the leaking of pee I would have to change him every hour or so. I am now using a combination of Bum Genius one size pocket diapers and Tushies (a chlorine free disposable) and I have no problem with leaking.
Good Luck! If you are in the Bay Area, I found the G diapers flushables to be cheaper at Elephant pharmacy than they are online. You could start by just getting the starter kit and seeing if it works for you.

Hi J.!

We tried the G-Diaper and it didn't work out for us. It wasn't so much because they leaked (though they did but that may very well have been my fault) but they required a little more effort then I expected. The absorbant liner is a lot larger then the holding tray so creating the perfect "U" is important and tricky. Also, the velcro is in the back which makes sense but was a challenge do to with my wiggler. I'm sure with practice it would have become easier to use.

We didn't have any problems with plumbing back up as it really breaks up with the swisher stick. I look forward to seeing what others reply as I still feel guilty about my disposable usage and would like to use something else now.

Good luck!
