Fussy 7 Month Old

I have twin 7 month old daughters, both are on the Nestle Good Start formula and the cereals as well as baby food - we have tried them all with no problems so far. But all of a sudden, within the last 2 days they are both really acting up as if they are in pain. They are having regular bowel movements and pass gas and pull their legs up as if they are having stomach pain. There have been no changes in their diet, we have been giving them gas drops regularly with feedings. Any thoughts on what might be going on to cause them to act up all of a sudden? So far no teeth - could it be? Do they go through a growth spurt now? They are both such great sleepers and have been sleeping even more these last couple days. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

It sounds to me like they may just be coming down with something if they are sleeping more also. I'd give it a another day or two and if they are not back to themselves I'd give the doctor a call.

Hi J.,

As a mother of three and an in-home daycare provider for 7 years, I would like to make a comment about your situation. Teething is possible at 7 months for sure, BUT, teething should not make the children pull into fetal positions and cry out as if they are having stomach pains. Stomach pain can be many things. It may just be the flu. There are many strands of flu and it can show up in many different ways. Even if they are having regular, solid bowel moments; they may be having a hard time passing thier stools. If this continues I would suggest calling your pediatrician or nurse. It's Friday, and you're going to have a long weekend if you don't have answers. Good Luck ! F.

There is a brand of homeopathic "teething tablets" that worked great on my 5 year old son when he was starting to get teeth, they just disolve on the tongue or in the cheek. It's available at WalMart in the baby section or check the OTC pharmacy section for a brand called Hyland.

At seven months, I would guess teeth may be coming in. Are they drooling alot? Do their gums have white spots (where the teeth are trying to push through)? Any fevers? Don't worry much with a small fever, this too could be teething. I would say that if they are eating fine, sleeping well, having good powel movements, and not loosing weight, I wouldn't worry too much. Give them teethers that have been placed in the freezer and comfort them as much as patience allows...teething is not fun!
I'm not sure about the timing of growth spurts. I never put too much stock in timetables; my kids didn't seem to go by them. They will grow when they are supposed to. :-) I have three grown children (my youngest is 16) and 4 steps. I don't think any of them ever reached milestones when they were supposed to. They were either ahead or behind and they all grew up to be normal, healthy, intellegent people.
I can't imagine life with twins! Busy busy. God bless.

I would guess either teething, or just a virus. My son has had a cold/virus for the last week, that has caused him to be really crabby and want to be held all the time. He would just scream, and over time, didn't settle down like normal. We were playing with my cousins daugther, and when the 2 of them are together, you usually can't even get his attention, and instead he wouldn't let me put him down. It started Wednesday night of last week, and he hasn't had that problem since tuesday morning, so I think it is getting better, but I was getting worried. I knew he had a cold, and that there wasn't anything worth going to the dr for, so I just gave him tylenol and cold medicine when he seemed to need it, and it helped some. He also got teeth at 7 months and 1 week old, and I have known a lot of babies that did at that same age, so that is likely. Have you heard of teething tablets? They are all natural, no side effects, and I know someone who's daughter got a whole bottle of them and poison control told her it didn't matter cause they are safe. My son's home daycare had never heard of them, and after I brought them she called them "miracle tablets", and recommended them to every other parent there, who also loved them. They are little white tablets that dissolve in the baby's mouth, and are milk flavored. I know Walgreens has them, some other places should, but I can't guarantee it. I would try giving those to them, and if it helps, then you know it is teething. If not, then it is probably just a little virus they both got and will go away on its own. It doesn't sound like anything too serious that you would have to go to the dr about. If it doesn't get any better in a few days, then maybe bring them in to make sure there isn't anything else going on, but I think they will be fine from what you said. Oh, and teething tablets don't numb the gums like orajel or anything like that, they releive the symptoms instead, so it isn't bad for the baby like orajel. Good luck with your little girls! I hope they feel better soon!

It's teething. sometimes kids do weird things but i will tell you i raised my daughter on that carnation good start and its great. it has wey proteins that break down just so they dont get the gas. but sometimes kids still do. if they are sleeping alot more and getting fussy it tells me that they are teething. just from experience. some kids dont start till they are 7 mos. just give them a little tylenol when this happens. and give them a warm washcloth to chew on by the next 2 weeks im sure you will see a tooth on the bottom lower. usually lol. but sometimes they get it on the top. feel their gums to see if they are puffy or red. that is also a sign. or if they are chewing on their hands or something else. just watch to see. hope this helps.

It could be teething, teeth come at different times for all kids. But I would think that maybe it is a growth spurt. My kids always slept more during growh spurts.

Are their tummies sore to the touch? If so I would have that checked out. Otherwise, if everything is going in and coming out okay I wouldn't worry about it. (too much)
