Hi moms, we just had our house painted and upon moving everything back where it goes I have found I want to change things up! I am tired of most of our old pictures/decor. Any fun ideas for any DIY projects? I want to create some new things for free or cheap... Maybe even something different above our bed instead of a headboard? thanks!

Do you sew? When we painted our house I decided to make new toss pillows for our sofas. I also made window valances for the kitchen window seat. I also love taking old mismatched picture frames and painting them all the same color and doing a collection of pictures on the wall. Our house is in a constant state of decor change because I get bored with it pretty quickly. As for a different head board I found an old iron and wood door and hung it above our head board to fill in the huge space above the bed. Something like that would make a great headboard and you can customize it with just a little bit of spray paint. Flea markets and thrift stores are great places to find things cheap that can be repurposed to fit what you want.

I just saw in a magazine that if you don't have a headboard, put a curtain rod above your bed. Drape scarves, large tapestries, anything, really, over the curtain rod like you would hang a towel. It's easy to change out when you get bored or per season. Looked cute. Just a thought.

Also, in a magazine years ago, I also read that if you are head-boardless, get a door at the hardware store, paint it whatever color you like, and hang above your bed. It'll look like an automatic headboard. Google something like 'headboard made out of door" and you'll likely find a picture of it.

quilted headboards are easy, i can give you basic directions or you can find them online. almost anything can be painted, to spruce up picture frames, lamps and that kind of thing. They make all sorts of spray paints now in neat finishes. I painted the ceiling fan and another light fixture in my kitchen years ago. Money was tight and they were ugly, i like it so much they are still there. Curtains are easy to sew and change out. and since frames and such are expensive, I've had family photos blown up to fit into frames of old artwork. I get a lot of my mom's hand me down decor, not my taste, but it saves me having to buy a frame and have things matted.

There is a site called Pinterest, which is FULL of DIY projects, anything under the sun. I actually saw a very cool headboard-type thing on there... the person used old barn siding, and pieced a couple boards together, the length of the bed... and she painted the word "Love" in script on the piece. It was so unusual and lovely! And there are hundreds of ideas like that on there. Good luck finding projects! I LOVE DIY stuff!

In our bedroom we used an old french door that was unfinished, stained it a cherry color, frosted the glass and put lighting behind it and made it a headboard for our bed. It looks amazing!

I also get new material and mak covers for my throw pillows on the couches and beds. It is amazing what a little change like this can do. You can also just take complimentary fabric and tie it around some of your pillows for a quick change up once and a while.

As far as pics on the wall, about a year ago, I blew up my favorite photos of my kids to poster size and framed each of them and hung them in a row down a large wall - it looks amazing!

Have fun!

I saw a nice project with 4 flat sliver frames. They were glued together (2 on top and 2 on bottom) and at the top a ribbon with a bow was attached to hang it by.
