Full or Twin Bed

My son is 23 months old and I think he will be ready for a big boy bed soon. He hasn't climbed out yet and shows no interest in doing so. I just can't decided on a twin or full bed. His room is large enough to easily handle a full and we have a separate room for guest. I would love to hear your thoughts.

What can I do next?

If you have the money to do it, go ahead and get a full sized bed. Then it will last longer since you will not have to get a new bed as he grows.

We went with a full size bed for our daughter. Our major reason, was we too had a crib that converted, to a toddler bed and then a full sized headboard. Bedding wasn't all that more expensive and she did get to choose her favorite Disney characters for her bedding.

I really like it for all the same reasons, as the other moms that have kids in full size beds. Plus she loves it because of all the room, she like to sleep sprawled out and in the full size she has all the room she needs and I don't worry about her falling out, unless she has moved herself the very edge and that doesn't happen often.

So my vote? If you have the room and the money...go with a full size.

About the same age my kids went to big kids beds too. I just went with the full size because I figured that would be a good size for them all the way through their teenage years and I wouldnt have to continue to buy beds. It is also nice if they are ever sick, there is room for you to lay with them and get them through the night. A Bigger bed has worked out nice for us. It is also nice if we have company we can put them in the full bed or put both my daughters in there and give the company the other room.

Hi S.,

We bought our son a full size because his crib converts into a full size bed. We are so glad we did, because it gave us the opportunity to lay with him to read books and lay with him if he needed it. Also, we have never had the fear of him falling out of the bed because it was bigger and believe me when he is restless in the night, he is all over the bed. We have discussed taking him down to a twin bed when he gets a little older so that he can have more room in his room as he grows. Good luck!

We have done both, a full size bed for my son and a twin for my daughter. Both have worked out great. My son was really young (16 months) when he started climbing out, so we thought the bigger bed would be better, but he still slept on the edge of the bed and not in the middle liked we hoped. With both the full and twin we ended up putting up the safety rail to keep the kids in bed. My kids are restless sleepers and move around a lot. Because my son was so young, we just put the boxspring and mattress on the floor so it was easier for him to climb in and out. But we have been happy with both, so I think whatever you can find that your looking for will work out. I absolutely love the twin bed we bought for my daughter, it looks so cute in her room. Wasn't sure in the store how I would like it, but it seems to have been a great choice.

Hi S.. I first chose a toddler that goes into a twin. My son wouldn't sleep in it at all. I didn't think or know at the time but it was very uncomfortable for him because he is so big! Now that I got him a queen- he is super comfortable and loves it because he can spread out on it. The one thing I would say is make sure you let your son pick out a comforter (the theme) - he'll be more comfortable. Good luck!

Hello S. I just wanted to share my thoughts, this is totally a matter of what you prefer. I personally practice co-sleeping with my children until they want a bed of their own (it always varies) from 18 mos - 4 years. Children usually graduate up to a twin. So unless you want to allow a sibling to co-sleep I would recommend the twin. It is plenty big enough for one child. A full size bed is great if two will be sharing. When I was a teenager, before I moved out, I only had a twin bed and I loved it. It was very affordable if I wanted to change my room decore and purchase all new bedding. Hope this helps.

HI S.,

We got our daughter a full - partially because she had a conversion crib that transformed into a full. We saw it as "we don't really HAVE to buy her another bed for a long time." I would go full for your son because boys grow so fast & by buying a full, you'll be set for awhile.

I would go with a full size. But I would wait until your son tries to climb out of bed. He might not have a problem know but once they are not in a crib, he can leave his bed and room at anytime. I have a son who is 3 and we put him in his bed around 2 1/2 and it was a pain and sometimes we still have problems, although it has gotten much better.
My girlfriend but her almost 2 year old in a big boy bed and her now her son will not sleep by himself anymore because he is scared.

I wish you luck. But if it isn't broke don't fix it. As long as he is happy in his crib, why change it!

Hi S.,

Unless he is climbing out all the time, or you need the crib for a new little one, for sanity's sake leave him in his crib as long as possible. My 39 month old, just had his crib converted to a toddler bed in the last 6 weeks and while he's doing fine, there are mornings where he gets up before I do, etc.

That being said...

I'd go with the twin bed and if you want the space for future buddies to sleep over, get a version with a trundle. You end up with space for 2 in the general space for 1.

You'll find more variety in kids bedding in a twin.

And since you already have a guest room, you won't need to take your son out of his room for guests, so the larger bed isn't needed. It will also allow more play space in his bedroom by having a smaller bed.

Of course, your mileage may vary...

Hi S.,

I highly recommend a toddler bed for transition. Toddlers do not always like having all that extra space when they change from their cozy crib to a toddler bed. With a toddler bed you can still use your crib mattress.

If you are trading up from a toddler bed I highly recommend a twin first for the same reason mentioned above. Good luck!

My son's crib converted to a full size bed. He went from crib to daybed (which he didn't like for some reason) to now a full size bed. What I like about the bigger bed is that we have a comfortable time for bed time stories and staying with him when he goes to sleep. My husband or I usually fall asleep with him for at least a little bit most nights.

Dad is a big guy so a twin would be right out for him to do tuck in. Sometimes all three of us are up there, usually not trying to sleep as that is quite crowded! lol But we can all be in his bed either laying down or sitting on it.

I would imagine when he is ready for sleep overs they will probably be camping out on the floor of the family room.

I had the same question when I was buying a bed for my daughter (now 5). I decided to get her a twin bed and it's been fine. But when my son came along (now 23 months) we decided to get him a double bed and I am SO happy I did! I bought a bed from Young America that has removable wooded rails. They are attractive and just slide on and off. This bed has come in handy on so many occasions. When my parents have visited, they use the bed and when we have had cousins spend the night, my daughter will sleep with them in the big bed. I have been so happy with the double that I am actually considering getting my daughter a new double bed.

How big is his room? Do you have out-of-town guests visit you often? For us, my daughter has a large room and we do have family sleeping over at our house from time to time, so we got a queen bed for her that doubles as a guest bed. If your son's room is small, and your family and friends are local, then maybe a twin or even a toddler bed is the way to go. You can also get a trundle bed if the room is small and you still need a place for guests to sleep.

I vote for a full! Both of my older two boys went straight from a crib to a full or a queen (they were hand-me-downs, it's not like we purposely went out looking for a queen for a 2 year old!). The reason that I enjoy them is for our snuggle-time before naps or bedtime. It's very easy to lay in the bed and read or tell stories and nobody feels cramped (we are a tall family!). Also, for those nasty sicky nights/days when all your little one wants and needs is for you to be attached to them, the bigger bed is great. I've spent many a flu or cold night laying in bed with my kiddos in their room, able to stretch out enough that it doesn't feel like I or my child is going to fall out and onto the floor! Maybe you could go to a bed store and lay down with your child to try out each type of bed and see what's more comfortable and keep in mind that when we feed and water them, they continue to grow! Ha, ha, ha! Good luck!

Hello,

When we moved our son at 26 months, we chose to buy him the Step 2 Stock Car Convertible Bed for several reasons. Little Tikes also makes similar beds. It's designed so that you can start by using the crib mattress and then switch to a twin when your child is ready. We also liked it because it has just enough of a raised side that it serves as a side rail (when used with a low profile mattress), though its only raised a little on each side. Our son is now 3 years 8 months and has never fallen out. It sits lower to the ground than most beds so it's easy to get in and out, and I knew if he did fall he wouldn't fall far. Most of all, we didn't want to spend the money on a toddler bed that he would use only for a short time, and we also didn't want to invest a lot of money into nice bedroom furniture when he was so young. This bed was around $299 at Toys R Us.

The drawback to this bed is that it may not fit your room decor. It worked for us, we just chose not to put the stickers on the bed, so it's just red and blue.

Our son loves his bed and of course thinks it's really cool because it's a car. Good luck with your transition.
