Eat only canned fruit...and put can openers in cabinet so fruit flys cannot get them! Eat all the fresh fruit ASAP! Use wax fruit as a decoy...and vacuum up the flys as the approach the decoy area...then take vacuum in car and drive to forest preserves...and release! These methods have been in my family for years! 1/2 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar with 2 drops of dishwashing detergent. Place cup out and they will be attracted to the smell and dive in. Good Luck!

First, try to get rid of the culprit, like any fruit on the counter or check your plants or flowers in the house. Next, take a small lamp that will sit on your counter, let it hover over a white, shallow bowl. Fill the bowl with water and squirt some cheap lemon dish soap in the bowl. Leave this on all night on a kitchen counter. Let the lamp illuminate the bowl. The fruit flies are attracted to the smell, light & white/light bowl, they fall in and die.

Good luck.

Put out a shallow dish with a mixture of water, cider vinegar, and a bit of dishsoap. They are attracted to the smell of the cider vinegar and the dishsoap breaks the surface tension so that they sink in the water and drown.

i posted on this and got some nice responses. do all the usual stuff like clean counters well and dont leave fruit out until they are gone but, the one that worked was putting apple cider vinegar and a drop of dawn dish detergent in a cup. they are attracted to this and get in and cannot get out. the thing is though it takes a few days to get them all and we didn't have that many. so you need to let it sit out over night for about a week. they also said leaving wine out works too. good luck they are pesty.

the other thing to remember is that fruit flies like moist places

if they have already taken up home and it has been a couple of days - make sure you have nothing out that could be a source of water etc etc. And pour some bleach down the drains so that the catch basins are free of eggs/flies as well.

they like this time of year and are attracted to those wonderful fruits we love to leave on our counter, of course, so be sure to put bananas, peaches, etc etc in fridge for a couple of days

My sister just did this the other day and it worked great. Take a small bowl and put a piece of fruit and wine or balsamic in it, wrap with saran wrap and poke small holes in the saran with a fork. The flies go in and can't get out. My sister siad as soon as she did it the flies were attracted to the bowl.

HI Diane,

I asked this question a while ago, I'm not sure how I can direct you to the 23 awesome replies I got! Try this link:

If that doesn't work maybe you can look it up using my name and fruit flies.

Good luck!

small dish with red wine vinegar and a few drops of dish soap! Gets them every time and gets rid of them:) I also make sure I don't have anything wet or damp laying around and unfortunately don't get to have the pretty fruit bowl on the table because it just multiplies them. Good luck!

mix apple cider vinegar with a little dish soap in a glass and just leave it out. they will be attracted to the scent and the soap will coat their wings so they can't fly and drown.

I also posted this question a few weeks back. This is teh link to the answers http://www.mamasource.com/request/8056242747130052609
What worked for me using the vaccum to suck them up and I am putting a smallcognac glas filled with a little bit of white wine and a drop of dishwashing soap in the window in the kitchen and I am amazed every morning how many drowned in it.
I am catching a lot of them that way, but I did not get completely rid of them yet. I know it will be over soon when the weather gets colder.
Good luck.. these little bugs are quite annoying!

Do you know where they are coming from? I had some little nats or fruit flies coming from my moist soil in my plants. I was told by the greenhouse to get some plant sand and cover the soil in my plants. The sand will smother the flies and their eggs which will get rid of them in the long run. It really works! I would also read the other responses becasue they sound good as to what to do to get rid of the ones already flying around. Good luck!

Fill a small bowl with fruit juice. Add three drops dishwashing liquid. Cover with saran wrap and a rubber band. Poke several holes in the plastic. I use a small disposable bowl as the carcasses are numerous, and ugly so I pitch the whole thing when done. Also clean your garbage disposal with baking soda followed up with vinegar rinse. They can grow in there, too.

Diane,
I hope you get responses to this ,because I am having the same problem. I remember awhile back there was the same question but I can't remember the solutions... seems there was one to set a small dish of apple cider vinegar on counter and the fruit flies are drawn to that ,get in that and drown. I tried that but didn't seem to help. So I hope others will offer up some answers!!! they are annoying little things arent' they?!!

An indoor bug zapper works GREAT with fruit flies. We got ours at Restaurant Depot, which is closed to the public, but they do have it at Amazon.com (I've never seen them at any other stores)
