From Pumps to Orthotics...Ugh!

Ok Mama Fashionistas I need help...

I just found out recently after a visit with a new orthopedic surgeon (my 3rd to be exact) that in addition to all my other knee issues, I have knock knees and need to wear orthotics. Now, I don't mean to sound dramatic, BUT, before having my son I lived in 3"+ heels and was/am a shoe/boot addict.

I now have these clunky inserts that are great in my workout shoes, but that is it. I need to find some everyday shoes that will go with jeans or trousers that are also somewhat stylish to accomodate my new friends.

Anyone have any suggestions as to a good shoe store or manfacturer?

What can I do next?

Hi K.,

If you haven't tried The Walking Company at Somerset Mall, I suggest that. They have a wide variety of very supportive (and often stylish) shoes. I wear Danskos at work because they have arch supports bilt into the shoe.
Another suggestion is to try the Good Feet Store on Woodward in Royal Oak. They can fit you with a semicustom orthotic that can be used in high heels or shoes with less coverage ( I believe one style even works with flip-flops).

Hi K.,

I feel your pain. I just had foot surgery and have had to switch from my cute shoes to proper shoes. What a drag. I went to a store called Hershey's. It's on Ford Rd. just west of Middlebelt on the north side of the road. I ended up with a pair of crocs that don't look like crocs. They are black patten leather kind of snake skin looking. I don't love them, but they are very comfortable and everyone keeps telling me that they are cute. They were expensive as is everything in the store (over $100 per pair), but all of their shoes are proper, supportive shoes.

Good luck,

L.

Try Naturalizer...they do have some ok styles now. I am an attorney and try to find a few pairs for when I travel and/or have to walk downtown to court.

Also- I'd go to Nordstrums and ask someone in the shoe department. Go during a slow time and they will bring you whatever will fit the orthodic.

Good luck!

Look for shoes tht ahve removeable inserts, such as Naot, El Naturista. Unfortunately, you can forget about shoes that are narrow at the toe box, but sometimes I will buy the shoe in a wide width to accomodate my orthotics.

Check the line of cobbie cuddler shoes that I know Kmart carries they are comfortable from what my Mother-in-law says. I am fortunate that I am still able to wear flats when needed. I am a stay at home Mom so I wear mostly sneakers or hiking boots because I go for comfort most of the time. Hope this helps.

I also started wearing orthotics after I had my son and had the same problem. The best that I have been able to do with the clunky black orthotics is Cole Hahn flats with rounded toes. They seem to fit and they at least help me have a more polished look than tennies. I also use a second pair of orthotics that are not custom made that i wear with shoes that are narrower. They are called whale tale inserts and I bought them from the podiatrist. Betwen the two sets I can wear orthotics with most closed shoes and me feet feel much better.

Hi Kim,
I haven't been forced out of my heels yet, but before I do, I wanted to start wearing more comfortable shoes to work. I haven't broke down to buy a pair because their a little pricy, but I found a line of shoes that was created by Orthopedic Surgeon, Taryn Rose. Her website is tarynrose.com and zappos.com carries her line as well.

Good Luck,

K.,
I also ended up in orthotics after having severe Plantar Facitis. Anyway, I found a good shoe store in Milford called For Feets Sake. They carry a brand called Naot and they have a removable liner that can be altered like an orthotic. They have a full catalog of beautiful shoes, many of which have the pull out liner. Downside, they are expensive, but very well made. You can go on the Naot website to view the shoes, but you can only purchase them at a certified dealer.
I have about 5 pair and I love them.
Hope this helps,
C. Hinsberg
