Freezing Baby Food

I was just thinking- can I freeze baby food that I have opened from a jar? I was talking to my stepmom and I had left a jar of baby food in the fridge. She asked me if we had to throw it away. So I started thinking- say I leave half of a jar at their house- instead of throwing it away, could she throw the remainder in the freezer for the next time we come over?

What can I do next?

I would say no because if you feed directly from the jar every time you stick that spoon into the jar from the babies mouth you are contaminating it with her saliva.Baby food is very reasonably priced and a small waste should not be such a big deal.
My step Mother made my baby sisters food in a food processor and froze extras in ice cube trays and then put in freezer bags, she always had chemical and sugar free food and it had real taste as herbs were used to help flavor it.She was rarely ever ill growing up.

The issue with freezing or refrigerating baby food is bacterial growth. If the child is fed out of the jar the saliva left on the spoon that is used to feed your daughter is put back in the jar time and again and it will start to develop bacteria. If you want to freeze or refrigerate the food take a half jar out of the jar and put it in a bowl or on a plate then put the other half in the fridge or freezer.

If you want to freeze the baby food jar then you should remove the portion of the baby food your little girl will eat and place it in another dish. That way, then you will not be putting the spoon with her saliva on it back in the baby food jar that will be frozen. If you do that you will essentially be freezing her germs in with the food. Same thing goes for putting food back in the fridge.

Yes, you can freeze it, but freeze it right away. Even better would be to take out only what you are going to feed with a clean spoon because the enzymes in saliva do have an effect on the freshness of the food. As in, if you are dipping the spoon into the food, feeding it to baby, THEN freezing the leftovers, it will effect the food. Again, so long as you freeze it right away, it is probably okay. Frozen food is good for a few months. If you leave the jar in the fridge, use it within 48 hours at the most. Good luck!

I used to freeze small portions of baby food for my youngest, but it was food I had blended down myself. I used ice cube trays and then put the portions in small freezer bags.

I would think you could, but to be safe I would go online and look up the product (go to Gerber, or Beechnut) and ask them if that information isn't available on the regular pages. They can tell you.

I've made my own baby food and freeze it in ice cube trays. So why not freeze baby food from a jar. Just make sure you've scooped out her portion first so there is no saliva contamination.

I think YES if you do NOT feed the baby out of the jar.

It should be fine, just so you didn't feed her from the jar (contamination).

You should never freeze the baby food once opened, you can keep it in the refrigerator for 1-2 days after it is opened, but never freeze them.

If you are making your own baby food, you should freeze them as soon as you make them, I usually use 1 oz freezer cubes, so I know I will not waste much.

I don't know about freezing baby food but keeping it in the fridge all depends on if you feed your baby right out of the jar or do you put a little into a dish and feed that way? If you are feeding right out of the jar, everytime you put the spoon into baby's mouth and then into the jar, you are putting germs into the jar that can grow while sitting in the fridge. Just a little reminder as some don't even think of this.

I dont see why not, but if you feed her right out of the jar, you should discard it right away.

As long as you are using a bowl for the portion you feed her from, you can safely freeze most foods for several weeks or months. I used ice cube trays to freeze the baby food I make for mine, and then put the cubes in plastic bags. I dont see why you could not do that with the store bought varriety.

as long as it hasn't been frozen & thawed before it's ok & don't freeze it in glass, the food expands & can shatter the glass & it can get into the food & hurt her intestines.
