Freezer Defrosted
I noticed yesterday that my freezer was left open, things were thawed out, meat, chicken, lean cuisines, ice cream...Do I throw it all out or is it safe to refreeze?
So What Happened?™
Better to be safe then sorry, its all going out sunday night for the trash! Thanks Ladies!

I wouldn't throw it out. I'd start cooking things that freeze well, have a party and use some of it, donate it to some neighbors you know who might use it.

Toss it.
I always have a ziplock bag full of ice cubes in my freezer, on top or in the door. When something like that happens (door open, or power shut) I check the bag. If the ice cubes have melted, I toss away. If they are still square, I keep all. It had been a wonderful trick once when we came back from holidays and discovered the cubes had melted (probably a power shut)

If the meats are still cold you can cook them immediatly. If not, you have to throw it all out :( If they are still pretty cold, i like the mom's idea of haing a party or giving some away. My sister lost hundreds of dollars in meat this way...she was in tears :(

Toss it, as much as that hurts to do so. Unless it is still frozen solid, you have no idea what temperature it dropped down to and for how long. Even if it's partly frozen and partly thawed, you still are taking a VERY big risk with anything but frozen vegetables. I truly feel for you, as this happened to me last year. We live in AZ, I had just spent about $600 stocking our big freezer in our garage for my husband and my home daycare and it was left open overnight, in July, in AZ. I cried as I threw out about 30 family-sized frozen meals, 20 steaks, 4 pounds of chicken, 6 pounds of hamburger, about 15 Lean Cuisines, an entire freezer box of BREAST MILK and much, much more. Did I mention my husband had just gotten laid off for the 2nd time in 6 months and we had a 3 month old? It was hard, but necessary, since I wasn't going to risk making everyone sick to save 4 Hefty bags worth of food. Please just grit your teeth and toss it all. Good luck!

sigh......my grand kids did this twice last year. I had those freezer pops in the freezer in the garage. I didn't see it was open till the next morning both times. ended up throwing hundreds of dollars of meat away. hubby said look its still cold (not it was slightly cool) but totally thawed. didn't want salmonella so tossed it all. so sad but way better than poisoning someone
