What kind of formula do other Moms use? Any suggestions for a 7 mo that has BF until now? Is there any brand that has significantly better taste or nutrition? Any brands that I should avoid? Any suggestions about good deals? I have relatives with Costco/BJ's memberships. Any deals there or online that I should consider?

Thanks,
K.

I used Similac Advance to supplement when my supply started tanking. It was recommended by dd's pedi so thats what we used. I didn't love the price, but she had absolutely no problems with it.

We use Enfamil Premium Lipil. Costcos is by far the cheapest place to get this brand. They have a HUGE container for $33. I'm not sure how the prices compare in MA, but here in CT, after Costcos Target is the cheapest. (I only checked for Enfamil).

Some of my friends have used the store brand formulas w/o any problems. I didn't do that simply because I didn't want to mess with a good thing. The Enfamil worked so I didn't want to throw a wrench in things.

What ever brand you decide on - go to their website and sign up. It is free and they will mail you a free sample and send coupons.

I used enfamil gentlease on both my girls. Walmart sells a generic version. They are all pretty much the same.

Good luck-

My BF son loved Good Start. It tastes more like breastmilk and is easier to digest than Enfamil or Similac. It's dairy-based, though, so keep an eye out for allergic reactions. A change in stool/poop habits is normal for a week or two, but if your baby gets more fussy, gets a rash, or if diarrhea goes on longer than a week, check with your doc.

We use the Costco brand formula (Kirklands) and haven't had any problems with gas or anything. Baby girl seems to like it just fine and the nutritional value is the same as name brands.

We used the Target brand with DD #2 and Walmart with DD #1. Both worked well for us!

hi~
I posted this along with your other question. I use earths best organic formula (~$29 a 25 ounce can – use currently Babies r us on-line has a can with 20% free so it is a 31.75 ounce can for $29). If you use similac advance (non-organic) CostCo on line has 34 ounce can for $31.

here are some comparison charts in helping to choose a formula:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/infant-formula/PR00058
http://www.livestrong.com/article/181955-infant-formula-c...
http://safemama.com/2010/03/29/infant-formula-cheat-sheet/

FYI - in 2008 FDA reported Nestle's Good Start had melamine while Mead Johnson's Enfamil had traces of cyanuric acid. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27914218/ also see http://safemama.com/2008/11/26/melamine-found-in-us-baby-... which states that in 2008 (November) "The FDA tested 77 infant formula samples and found trace amounts of melamine in the following baby formulas:
Mead Johnsons Enfamil LIPIL with Iron: 2 tests read 0.137ppm and 0.14ppm
Nestle’s Good Start Supreme Infant Formula with Iron: 3 tests with an average of 0.247ppm
The FDA did tests on Abbott Laboratories brands including Similac but none was detected in the 18 samples. However an Abbot spokesman said some in-house tests did find trace amounts though which brands were not specified."
Companies coming forward claiming their own testing shows no melamine content:
Hain Celestial Group Inc – Earth’s Best Organic Formula
Privately held PBM Nutritionals (store brand formulas)

I could not find any 2010 info so this may have changed by now.

good luck with your decision!

I used Enfamil Lipil, and I liked it because it always mixed smooth, never clumpy like some. I used both that and breast and my boys would both go back and forth with no problem.

Formula can be quite a controversial topic in regards to chemicals. Formula is loaded with everything unnatural. Think about it, it's a reproduction of breast milk. You didn't mention why you are switching, but as you know breast milk is the best. Is there a way you can pump your breast milk if needed? If not, I would recommend you use an Organic formula. I supplemented at times with Earth's Best, my daughter liked it and did well with it the few times we used it. I think Similac also has an Organic formula. Organic might be a little more in terms of money, but in term of your baby's health, it's worth the extra dollar. Don't you think?
Good Luck, and congrats on your little one :)
