I was just wondering if you can mix baby food and formula together? If so, how much food do you mix with the formula?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

She has a hard time pooping so her pediatrician recommended prunes and we got her puréed prunes so I was wondering if I need to just give them to her as they are or If I could give them to her in her formula.

She is three months and I have been giving her prunes from a spoon. She is a supported sitter so I figured she can have some baby food, I still give her a bottle though and trust me.. After last night and this morning, those prunes worked, to the point where I had to give her another bath. Haha. She strains when she poops so that's why I think she is having a hard time pooping.. Her face gets really red and it has the consistency of play dough. I know this cause I had to pull a chunk from her bottom.

I wouldn't mix prunes with formula or bm. Yuk!

You might try mixing them with peaches or pears...

Pear juice always did the trick with mine.

Good luck!

No, food doesn't go into formula or breastmilk. Can be a choking hazard. If your baby is old enough for food, then she's old enough for spoon feeding. Good luck

You could try prune juice. My niece had trouble with constipation, and her ped recommended diluted pear juice. No idea why, as growing up I had always heard prunes were best for that.

Did your ped not want you to try juice? Gerber sells 4 ounce bottles of juice. I don't remember if I've ever seen straight prune juice, but I do remember seeing pear juice as well as prune-cherry juice.

Good luck! Poor little thing.

If she is old enough to sit up and eat, feed the prunes to her with a spoon.
If she is still too little for spoon feeding, you can put prune juice in a bottle.

Don't mix with formula in either case. :-)

I got pure prune juice from the natural food store, and put a tiny bit in the bottle. Nothing helped regulate his bowel movements like probiotics, though.

How old is she?
That makes a difference.

Things like bananas, are binding.
What is she eating, mostly?
Even cereals can be binding in an immature baby's system.

Then again, you said she is having a hard time, pooping.
How do you know?????
Meaning, it is not coming out? She has pain? The poop is hard and small and rock like?
Or, is she just making grunting sounds as... she, poops? And it SEEMS like she is having a "hard time" pooping???????
Making sounds as a baby poops, does not necessarily mean, they are having a hard time pooping.
ie: with my son when he was a baby, he always made lots of noise/grunting as he pooped. It was just how he was. He was not having a hard time, pooping, per say. He was just so noisy as, he, pooped.
And once it came out, his poop was fine. And he was not constipated at all. And sometimes his poop was just so huge!

I would not mix Formula with it or her baby food.
Once my kids were 6 months old, per cereal, I just mixed it with water.
Not with my breastmilk either.

If your baby is real young, I would not give her prunes. Or, did the Pediatrician say how much to give her?
If you give too much, get ready for a blow-out poop!

I'm assuming by baby food, you are talking about infant cereal.... If not, I wouldn't mix puréed veggies or anything like that with formula... ICK.

You can, if preparig it as a "solid". Just replace the water called for in the directions with prepared formula.

If using it to thicken the formula, it isn't really recommended.... Young babies have a harder time digesting the cereal, and they NEED the nutritional benefits of the formula, not cereal. If your pediatrician recommended it for some reason, then he should tell you how much to use... Usually a couple tablespoons for a full bottle.

ETA: yeah, I wouldn't mix it... I used to give my DD 1/2 apple or pear juice to 1/2 water when she was constipated. It worked like a charm! Tummy massages after a warm bath also helped out quite a bit, as well as bicycling her legs. The movement helps break things up and get them moving.

How old is the baby? Is she already eating solids? If so just spoon feed the prunes. The only thing I ever mixed with formula/breast milk was baby cereal.

My oldest son had constipation issues when he was too young for solids, my pediatrician at the time recommended a small amount of clear Karo syrup mixed with water in a bottle. This was years ago and I know that pediatrician recommendations can change from year to year so I'm not sure if it is still recommended but I know it worked like a charm for us!

I would spoon feed the food and give formula separate. The food would stop up the bottle nipple. Of course with cereal, I always mixed it with formula or breastmilk.

I just read the part about prunes. If you don't want to spoon feed the prunes you could give prune juice in a bottle.

When we started solids I'd spoon feed baby food till our son didn't want anymore and then give him formula in his bottle sort of like it was the milk chaser.
He didn't want as much formula but he still wanted some.
Eventually formula became half milk half formula and finally all milk (gradually over a long period).
He's just about 15 yrs old now and still a big milk drinker.
Between him and my husband (I only cook with it or have it with cereal) we go through 4 gallons per week.

Your baby is taking formula, this means their entire nutritional needs are being met by what they are drinking. They don't "need" food. Baby's that are under 6 months of age should not have any food at all.

Each bite of food you give the baby takes away from the nutrition they need from the formula. They eat and eat and eat more food because they are not getting the nutrients they need.

If the baby is over 6 months the foods she start out on are cereals mixed with formula where they are runny. She can take this runny mix with a spoon. Baby food is only a tool to teach a baby to chew and swallow. It can take months for them to learn how to do this.

As they get closer to 10-11 months they can start eating some table food instead of baby food. Baby food has very little if any nutrition in it. I talked to the company one time about baby food that is close to the expiration date. The person I talked to said that baby food had very little nutrition in it to begin with and as it sits on the shelf it loses even more. The light kills the rest of the nutrition as it sits in the warehouse and then on the shelves in the store. By the time it gets even close to the expiration date there is nothing left but flavored goo.

If your baby is constipated from formula the prunes should help but feed her less than half a jar. Be sure to dip some out into a bowl the refrigerate the rest. Don't feed her out of the jar then keep it. The bacteria grows much faster in baby food because there are no preservatives in it. It can make her sick if you keep it after her germs get in it.

By putting some out into a bowl you can still use the rest within a few hours if it's refrigerated.

I think the better solution to constipation for us was the apple/prune juice you can buy in the baby food section. The kids would suck it down when I put a nipple on the small bottle. They are a single serving. Let her have one of those juices per day, if she's over 6 months that is or unless the doc says it's okay.
