Formula Fed Baby - Eating Solids

My 9 month old is now eating baby food stage 3. She is also formula fed. I am having a hard time knowing how much formula and how much food she should be getting daily? I asked her Dr about it and he said to just give her what she "asks" for ... But if that were the case, she would be eating all day (she LOVES to eat!). Any suggestions on how much baby food and how much formula a 9-month old should be getting?

What can I do next?

I also have a 9 month-old and didn't get much direction from my ped. either. Fortunately she is baby #2 so I at least have a little experience! So the feeding times below are always consistent, and the amounts listed are what I offer her. Some days she is less interested in her solids, so she doesn't finish the whole bowl of food. Other days she eats everything, and some organic puffs too (she can pick them up and feed herself). And some days she drains every bottle, while other days I pour out a few ounces out of each one. She's gaining weight perfectly and always seems happy and satisfied, so I don't worry if she's more or less hungry on different days. I think 28-34 oz of formula per day is recommended. Anyway, this is our day:

6AM bottle (8oz)
9 AM solid food 3-4 oz
10 AM bottle (6-8 oz)
Nap
12 PM solid food (3-4 oz)
1 PM bottle (4-6 oz)
Nap
3 PM bottle (4 oz)
5 PM solid food (3-4 oz)
6-6:45 PM bottle (8 oz)
6:45-7 PM Bed

Also, I'm making all of her baby food and it's SUPER easy. I'm happy to give you some tips & recipes if you're interested!

At 9 months, eating solids is all about acquiring self feeding skills. Let her have at it and get messy! It's great that she likes to try stuff and is a good eater! Expose her to a wide range of different foods. I think she should still have about 24 oz. of formula per day as that is where her main nutrition is still coming from. Good luck!

When my son (now 16 months old) was about 9 months old he was getting 3 bottles of 7-8oz of formula (morning afternoon and night) and on average eating 2 or 3 jars of babyfood and a little bit of table food 3 times a day (breakfast lunch and dinner). His schedule looked kinda like this: 6am - 8 oz bottle, between 8-9 breakfast cereal w/formula and 1 or 2 fruits, nap, lunch 2 or 3 jars of baby food, nap, 7-8oz bottle, dinner 2 or 3 (heck, sometimes 4) jars of baby food, then 7-8oz bottle bed at 730-8. I think he would eat all day long too! Good luck! Now that he is on milk my doctor says he should be getting between 16-24 oz of milk a day. I believe that is how much formula he was supposed to get before we did the switch.

the good thing to know is that she probably shouldnt get all solids for her nutrition; just for "fun" and texture and the experience of eating solids. so you should still make formula a main part of her diet, solids should be reserved for happy times after shes had a bottle or whatever. hope that helps.

I followed the Babywise II book for feeding my kids solid foods. It worked really well, I really liked the feeding schedule. In the book they are against ''snacking'' (feeding baby every 2 or 3 hours) they much prefer getting them on good eating habits so they eat full meals alongside the rest of the family. Here is what they recommend.
1st meal: 6-8 oz bottle, cereal and fruit (I always mixed the fruit into the cereal)
2nd meal: 6-8oz bottle, cereal and veggies (or dinner variety of baby food)
3rd meal: 6-8oz bottle, cereal, fruits, and veggies
4th meal: 6-8 oz bottle before bed

feedings are typically every 4 hours or so. I think my girls napped between meals 1&2 and again between 2&3. I can't remember for sure, its been a couple years :) Here's what I think their day looked like:

7:30 - meal 1
10:30 - nap
12:00 - meal 2
3:00 - nap
5:30 - meal 3
9:30 - meal 4 and bed.

You can always add in real solids like Cheerios, goldfish, macaroni noodles, etc. with meals or as a small snack before dinner or bed.

Good Luck!

When both my kids were 9 months we were already starting regular food and moving away from the baby food it just does not fill them up the way solids do as they get older . They would get a 4 to 5 oz bottle when they would get up in the morning then around 8 or 9 they would get breakfast some toast and fruit finger food . Then they would have a morning nap and when they woke up they would get a bottle 4 to 5 oz . Then eat lunch usally a fruit and a veggie and some kind of meat all finger foods they could try to feed them selfs. Then a nap later and then they would eat supper with us and then a bottle before bed . If they were hunger between meals they got healthy snacks . My doctor always told me that they would let me know when they were hungry but to have them on a schedual .
