Ok first a little history, My son has had isssues with milk and soy protein formulas. he would projectile vomit and we ended up in the er. well they told use to a hypo formula which we have been for four months now and he has been doing wonderful. The PEDI said its a protein sensitivity to formula protein and he may grow out of it but if not its no big deal bc real milk wont affect him the same its just the way the formula is so its a formula issue. Ok so he get WIC assistance and they approve the formula with dr written statement (which dr provides NO PROBLEM) but Now WIC says to try him back on the other formulas( im guessing they dont want to pay 20 sumthing bux a can any more and want it cheaper.) well It wont hurt to slowly try him on a new formula bc he may grow out of it BUT ever since I have been transitioning he has been fussier, diarrhea and spit up. Is it just part of transitioning OR is it still protein sensitivity?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your response. I am going to keep him on the hypo form ( we didnt get very far with the other in transitioning) I am going to explain to WIC tha we tryed and that all they req is a drs note which the dr provides and that unless they show me otherwise that they req more then thats what they will get and in return they need to uphold there own rules! I will be firm and hopefully get this resolved. I thought maybe it was a transitioning thing and that is why i sought advice bc I couldnt find anywhere else it to be a transition issue. Thanks Again Mommys

Want to add something so people understand. WIC helps, Financially I cant afford over 300 a month on nothing but a special formula. My son couldnt even BS which is something we tryed. My daughter didnt have this problem We breast fed. I Purchase in addition to what Wic provides Mty son goes through a 22$ can almost every two days in addition to baby foods we purchase as well. i also want to add i was only looking to find out if it was a transitioning issue so if you are responding just to be mean and act like i am tryinfg to have someone else support my child in food besides my self then YOU need not respond!

Don't switch, just keep doing what is working. INSIST that WIC give you the formula that the Dr prescribed - have the Dr write a new note every month if need be.

Sounds like he is sensitive to that formula. My son did the same thing when I tried switching his formula. I would talk to your pediatrician about wic. Maybe the pediatrican has some free samples of the formula you need too. You might want to check for a local pregnancy assitance center nearbye to see if they have some free formulas too. good luck, also ignore the rude remarks from the mothers that dont understand the whole reason why some are using wic and dont know or even need to know why a mother decided on formula/breastfeeding!

Defiitely talk to your ped just to be safe, but is sounds like you son does need the special formula. Do what you know is best. If WIC will accept the doctor's note, then that sounds like the right thing to do. It won't be that long before he's done with formula and on to table food!

It's kind of funny that you point out that WIC would rather not shell out the extra money for the expensive formula, but never mention that you could certainly go to the store and buy it yourself.

When you're relying on someone else to buy your child's food, you're stuck with their rules. And I appreciate it when the government is trying to be frugal with taxpayer dollars

My 4 month old has MSPI, and it sounds *to me* like yours is indeed still reacting to milk and/or soy protein. With MSPI, any amount of milk/soy protein can cause problems.

If you have access to a pediatric GI, I'd highly recommend getting an appointment. Ours has recommended beginning food trials at 7 months (things with broken down proteins, like yogurt) under dr. supervision to see if he's outgrown it. It's likely he will by 1 year, but there's also the chance that he won't! In the meantime, my son is on prescription amino acid based Elecare, completely free of all milk/soy proteins, and doing well. I would never take him off it without explicit medical instructions. From a real doctor. Not from an organization (no matter how wonderful) that needs to protect it's expenses.

Why on Earth would you even consider letting WIC dictate something that affects the heath and well-being of your son in a negative way? Isn't that kind of the backbone of what WIC is FOR? Nutrition for children? Keep getting your written statements and getting what is working well for your child.

Please keep him on the hypoallergenic formula. I trule believe that the fussiness, spit up and diarrhea is from the new formula. Shame on WIC for tyring to change him when the dr. neccesitates he use special formula!!

WIC is not medically qualified to make a call like that! If your pediatrician is still writing your "notes", that's as good as a prescription and WIC should comply, no ifs ands or buts.
