Formula - Fort Worth,TX
I'm a SAHM and I usually BF my daughter. Sometimes I need to feed her formula when I haven't pumped and we are out in public. Up until recently we never bought formula, just used what the hospital had given us for free. It took us awhile to get through one can. So today I went and bought formula (I couldn't remember what we had -Similac or Enfamil) it has been about 2 months since we needed it. I only was able to pump 1 bottle but knew she may have wanted another one while I was gone. I had the babysitter mix up the formula, and my baby hates it! She pushed it away and wouldn't drink it. How does everyone tell these formula's apart??? There are so many different types! Plus does anyone know which ones don't taste funky??? I'm worried that she will refuse another one and another one...Formula is not cheap! Pls help!

I noticed that regular milk based formula tastes bitter, soy based formula tastes a bit better, but breastmilk is quite sweet, so it is definitely hard to supplement with formula! What you might try is mixing the formula and breastmilk 50/50 and see if that helps. It could also be the bottle, maybe shes having some confusion, especially if she doesn't take a pacifier. Two months is a long time without a bottle...squirt a little formula on her lip from the bottle to tell her that you are trying to feed her and see if that helps. Good luck..

If you are only going to be gone a few hours, I wouldn't feed her any formula. If you feed her formula, than her demand for your milk along with your supply will go down. I never use to be able to pump a lot at one sitting, so I would do a couple of pumps near each other every 1/1.5/2 hours and put that together to make a couple of ounces (or whatever I needed). Oddly the body makes more milk if you pump multiple times versus only once during the same span of time.

To make things really easy, I have found that a Hooter Hider http://www.bebeaulait.com/ worked really well when I nursed in public.

If she didn't have a problem with the last formula that you brought home from the hospital, then I would call the hospital and see what samples they give out. This way you may only end up purchasing a few or may even remember what the can looked like. Good luck.

Not the answer you're looking for, but just nurse her in public. I've even heard a public service announcement on 106.1 FM saying that it is legal to BF in public. I got a nursing cover off of Craigslist for $5. Since it's been so hot, I've also been BF without a cover. I mean, it's hot enough just holding a baby. Who wants to cover up and hold a baby when it's 90 degrees out and you're waiting for your older child at swim lessons.

Contact the company and let them know your daughter doesn't like it and request a refund. Most companies stand behind their products and will gladly provide a refund/replacement. You're right, it is expensive and you don't want to be stuck with a can you can't use.
My boys preferred the GoodStart brand - orange can. Everyone (every baby) is different but we never had any problems with it.

The problem I found with trying to only do formula once in awhile was we didn't use it before it expired (it expires one month after you open the can!). I am VERY picky about what I give our kids so I was only comfortable using organic formulas. I used Earth's Best with our first and Bright Beginnings with our second. I NEVER had issues with formula other than just not using them quick enough - I think the formula companies do that on purpose! The only thing I would recommend if you are not picky about formula is to use the ones in the individual packets so the rest doesn't go bad. This way it would be fresh as possible. Good luck!

Is it possible to pump a couple extra times a day to increase your milk supply and to store some bottles in the freezer for when you need them? It's actually very easy to BF in public without anyone even knowing. You don't even have to use a cover, which draws more attention you what you are doing. If YOU are not comfortable with it, that's one thing. But if you are worried that others will not be comfortable, that's their problem. You are feeding you child for goodness sake! Why are they even paying attention to what you are doing. They should be minding their own business.
