I am finding it very hard to lose weight and I am wondering if there are any diabetics out there who feel the same. I have tried the Weight Watchers program to no avail and I have tried calorie reduction but something about my body won't let the weight go. That is when I realized that as a Diabetic, your body doesn't process foods the way it should and so what works for most probably doesn't work for us Diabetics.

I was hoping that you could share a diet that worked for you and maybe share your story about this same journey that I am on. I am currently testing this theory but limiting my carb and fat intake to see if this helps but if any of you have other suggestions, please let me know. I am desperately trying hard to lose a couple of pounds before the Holidays and certainly before my daughters turns 1.

Thanks to all!
N.

I am not a diabetic but my mother is and her doctor had her on a low carb diet and it seemed to work well for her. It also worked wonders for her blood sugar

Hi N.,
I've been type 1 since I was 17. It has always been hard to diet but is getting easier now that I'm on an insulin pump. I gained 50 pounds...all water for my daughter and lost it right away. For my son, I gained a bunch, but it was all fat and I still have about 15 pounds to go and he's two years old already.

One word of advice would be to involve your endocrinologist and a diabetes nurse and maybe a nutritionist. My diabetes nurse said that a no or extremely no carb diet doesn't work for diabetics because our liver puts out extra sugar because your body sort of goes into survival mode, which causes your blood sugar to rise even if you don't eat the carbs. So, we need some carbs. But we don't need to go overboard.

My biggest delima is when I start to do well on a diet, then I get low blood sugar and I crave fattening things. That's why I said that it's a good idea to involve your docs. They could adjust your insulin level and suggest a good diet - probably the best thing is the official diabetic diet with a lower amount of calories. Sounds simple. For me it's just getting motivated. I only need to drop 15 pounds, so, I've just been trying to go on more walks and swim more with the kids.

Good luck to you!

Hi! I'm not diabetic, but I've had gestational diabetes 3 times now and I'm definitely predisposed. I think everyone is different. Start really watching how you respond to certain foods. For me, what really works (of course, this is really hard) is to cut out all sugar and all processed foods / refined carbs. For example, no sweets of any kind, and no pasta, potatoes, etc. Veggies, fruits, salads are all still okay though. Of course, if you are on insulin, don't do this w/o talking to your doctor since your insulin levels will need to be adjusted. It will take about 3 days, but you will start to feel much better and the cravings will go away. Start each morning off with a good, high protein breakfast, like an egg or a protein shake. Drink a lot of water, but watch things like milk, which actually has a lot of sugar in it. Take a good multi-vitamin, and try an extra supplement of chromium. I'm not a fan of chromium picolinate personally, but the Vitamin Shoppe makes a formula called Chromium glucose tolerance factor which works great. Nature's Ovens makes delicious whole wheat bagels that have a lot of fiber in them and they have low net carbs. Have a string cheese or a low carb yogurt shake as a snack when you first start to feel a craving. Good luck -- it isn't easy but you can do it!
