For a Friend

When I was pregnant, an ultrasound diagnosed hydronephrosis with my son in uetero. This meant there was more fluid in his kidney than was supposed to be there. The doctors only said they would monitor it. After birth, he had ultrasounds and VCUG? that showed no backtracking of fluid to his kidney. He is followed annually with ultrasounds, but so far, nothing has become of it (thank goodness!)

Hi hun, yes the situation can be stressfull dear but i just want to let you know that i will hold you and your friend in prayer and that with God all things are possible....im un sure of how much you know about the Lord but if u have any knowledge of how great he is and will always be, then seek him with all your heart and to me, prayer has a calming affect and a reasurrance to go with it....i my self have not endurred anything like that with my past pregnancy, but i did almost lose my daughter several times and even when the doctor told me i might still lose her, i said that with God there are no chances, i got up and walked out of the office... i am a diabetic and yes my pregnancy was difficult...i believe god has a plan and purpose for every one and i believe that the lord has a plan for that little girl.... BTW i was only expected to live 2 hrs when i was born. i was 2 wks early and born with an enlarged heart and phenumonia.... GOD IS GOOD! Blessings dear J.,

I had a similar experience but my doctor didn't catch the problem before my daughter was born. My daughter had a blockage from her intestine to her tummy. No food, air, gas, etc could go down or come out. She was basically starving to death & no one would listen to me and we almost lost her. Luckily, the ER staff listened to me & got my daughter help-we were flown to UC Davis in Sacramento, CA & my daughter got the surgery needed to correct the issue. She is now 7!!!

Tell your friend to put the stress & fear to God. I know it's hard but she can't do anything at this time & really stressing about it isn't good for her or the baby. She's lucky that they caught it now (if infact the baby does have a blockage). Let her know to find out all she can about the blockage, what treatment needs to be done & when. Knowledge is power!! It will actually give her some relief to know what to expect if it does happen-she won't be in the dark like I was. I wish you all the best, but please emphasize to her to always go with her gut & don't be afraid to ask questions over & over...she knows her body & her baby better than anyone.

With my son I had an ultrasound and they thought the same thing because he didn't empty his bladder the whole time they were filming. So they sent me in for another one and sure enough, he peed while being filmed and we all had a laugh. Ultrasounds can be pretty innacurate so most likely it's nothing. But if she's worried she could get one in a week or so and see if the little one will empty it's bladder! : )

I have a friend who went through this same thing and have left a message for her to get ahold of me so I can give you specifics. It is just a wait and see situation. My last daughter had kidney dialation (possibly blocked and not functioning). We waited and had another ultrasound. Then we were sent to a clinic that had better ultrasounds. They were able to give us more specific information. It helps so much to know exactly what the possibilities are so that your imagination doesn't go wild with everything. Once she was born, we were able to find out even more based on another ultrasound. She is due to have a second operation to correct the problem when she is 8 months old. She is a very happy chubby baby who is very healthy otherwise. From her looks you would never know that she has any problems. She is on antibiotics, and has been since she was born, to ensure that she doesn't get any infections in the kidney/urinary system. It is hard to wait, but we were able to go to Children's Hospital at UW and it helps to have specialists who work with children as doctors.

I'm not sure what is going on, but my though are with her. Pregnancy is stressful enough, and then to throw in some news like that...not fun. Waiting is the hardest part, but I suppose there is the chance everything could resolve itself in utero. Of the 10% that have it, what are the side effects?

My first pregnancy had the same thing. We knew by ultrasound there was a problem with the kidneys by about 10 weeks because the amniotic sac was touching the fetus - there was no fluid. At 14 weeks, the baby was tangled up...and shortly after I miscarried.

If your friend is at 25 weeks already, hopefully the prognosis will be better (and you've got some positive stories from other folks here). But I believe that even though I lost the baby, it was for the best, since it wouldn't have thrived if she'd come to term since she'd had the issue through most of her development.

My next two pregnancies were happy and healthy! I wish your friend the best.

I appologize my situation was a tad different, but I had to tell you if only a little relief can be found from our story. We had the first 'big' ultrasound to tell the sex of our second child. Two days later the doctors office called and told me they had my level 2 ultrasound scheduled. I was completely confused and told the receptionist that I had mine done two days ago. She said 'Oh my goodness. No one called you.' You can imagine my reaction! After all the confusion the doctor ended up on the phone explaining to me that there was a 'bright' spot in the film wich usually means that there is a chance that the baby has something wrong with their heart. We were devistated! We went to the second ultrasound (Three weeks later!) scared and stressed. They then explained there that the spot actually was a marker for down syndrome. I was wondering at this point if anyone realized the extreme pressure this puts on a pregnant woman. The wondering and stress of not knowing what is going on is absolutely unbearable! I spent the rest of my pregnancy under stressful thoughts of 'what if', 'what did i do wrong' etc... five months later we had a perfectly healthy beautiful 10lb. 7oz. baby girl. She is almost a year now and still just fine. I guess the moral of the story is these things are not 100% and you have to wonder if the stress on you and the baby is more harmful than the outcome. I wish your friend all the best. I am not religious, but am a firm believer that God doesn't give us more than we can handle. I hope this brings a little tiny bit of comfort for your friend.

They found that my son had "renal pelvis dilation" when he was in utero. Basically the renal pelvis is the part of the kidney where the urine sits before it travels down the ureters to the bladder. There are several things that can cause this issue, but they can't determine exactly what is causing it until you have the baby. If there is a normal amount of amniotic fluid, then the baby's bladder is working, because amniotic fluid is baby pee. So... as long the kidneys are functioning well enough to keep the fluid level safe the baby should be fine until he is born. Normally once the baby is born they will do a voiding system urethragram (VSUG); which will tell them where the problem is. Our pediatric urologist, Dr. David Lashley (who I highly recommend) said he doesn't like to do them until the baby is 3 months, as long as baby is peeing ok. The bigger the baby gets the easier the procedure is and the easier to see what's going on. Anyway, with my son they found that his ureters are too narrow at the top and so it take more pressure/urine build up before it passes down into the bladder. More than 90% of kids outgrow this problem by the age of 18 months. My son is almost a year now and is doing fine. Please send me a message if you would like more information.

This exact thing happened to me. Once the baby was born she was able to relieve herself and there were no problems at all. My dr. said that if 10% of babies have this indication in the ultrasound on a small % of those(like 5%) have problems when they are born. Tell your friend to try not to worry.

One of my daughters had what they called kidney reflux where the urine goes back up into the kidney and if she were to get a bladder infection it would turn into a kidney infection before we even new, she grew out of this by the time we had her one year check up. A friend of ours daughter has a blocked kidney that they also found inutero and gave her all the scares but when she was born it was not as bad as they thought and they have had mutiple test done and what they thought was going to be surgery within a couple of days of birth is now revisiting the situation at 5 months doing more test and maybe surgery then. so tell her to keep a positive attitude things in this area can change for the better quickley from what i have seen. :)

I have one friend whose baby had NO kidneys and sadly the baby won't survive and she has to give birth at 25 weeks to ababy who will die. Sorry so morbid but sometimes it helps to really have the worst case scenario.
I had another friend whose daughter had kidney issues and she had a catheter as an infant until she could have surgary. But everything turned out great and she was always a happy baby!

I dont have a response for your request but i feel your patience request i am mom to two boys @.5 and one due in June...can anyone say support group? sorry i have nothing of actually help to add on the topic!! but i wish your friend well and her baby girl!

I have never experienced this situation for myself, but I have a friend who was told the same thing that 1 of her babies kidney's wasn't functioning properly and was blocked...for my friend after the baby was born they ended up having to do surgery. The baby is just fine happy healthy and growing normally! I think your friend will be ok although it must be scary!

I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant and so I had ultrasounds every 2 weeks. On the one 5 days before I was induced they did not see him urinate during the ultrasound which led them to possibly "suspect" the same situation. I am not sure of your friends situation or why they think it is a possibility. They just made sure he had an ultrasound after birth and everything was fine. My OB and the Dr who read the ultrasound were very reassuring and let me know that if there was a problem it was easily correctable. I had a little boy. They say it is more common for boys than girls. Hope this helps, have a great day!

my boyfriend's son with his ex had the same problem. he is almost 2 now and has no problems at all. it was something they kept an eye on for a while, but he really never had to have any extra attention for it. just some tests and monitoring from time to time to make sure he was eliminating urine well enough. probably the most important thing she could do is to keep a close eye and even chart the wet diapers EVERY day. I don't have a comment about your friend but i am a mom to 5 boys. The more you have the better! They keep each other busy! Remember this; the lord never gived us more than we can handle! May god bless your week!
