Hi, i'm supposed to be in a wedding in Ohio in October. i'll be at the beginning my 33rd week. my doctor says that i'll be fine, as long as there are no complications prior to the flight. has anyone out there flown while that far along in their pregnancy? what was it like? did you have any complications? any reassurance would be greatly appreciated!!! thanks

What can I do next?

Hi N.--my husband and I moved to AZ when I was 36 1/2 weeks pregnant, and my OB at the time actually BEGGED me to fly here instead of drive. The airline recommended a letter of permission from my doctor just in case someone objected to my flying at the airport. I took the letter with me, but there were no problems. If anything, it's almost a BETTER experience flying while pregnant--everyone spoils you!!! Just remember to drink lots of water while in flight. Good luck!

During my last preganacy I flew twice, both times without any complications. The second time I was under much stress, moving cross country, and was 34 weeks along. I asked several people and they all said that it was alright. Drink lots of water. I know you can't take it on the place with you, but take an empty bottle and fill it after you pass security. Don't be shy to ask the flight attendants for extra water.

I also flew to a wedding in NJ when I was about the same place in my pregnancy. I had a normal, healthy pregnancy and had no trouble during the flight b/c I drank a TON of water (and yes, I had to go to the bathroom on the plane, but oh well) AND I also kept my feet and legs moving all the time while I was sitting just doing ankle pumps, doing foot dance moves, etc. Both of those allowed me to transition easily on all my flights and for my trip/return home with no problems at all.
Hope that helps...

I flew twice when I was around that time, and it was just fine - no complications or anything.

The only thing that I would suggest would be to possibly locate the local hospitals for when you are out of town, just in case there are complications (which is extremely unlikely).

Have a lovely time!!

I flew when I was 31 & 32 weeks pregnant. It was fine. I did notice a few more Braxton Hicks contractions then normal and the baby was moving like crazy. I was told I had more BH because I wasn't drinking enough water during my travels. I guess the altitude can make you dehydrated too. So the moral of the story - stay hydrated, wear super comfy clothes, and you'll be fine!!

Hi N.,

Flying while you are pregnant is completly fine unless you are super high risk and need to be within in medical attention all the time. I flew during all 4 of my pregnancies at various months...One time with my 2 year old, 8 months pregnant - ALONE! It was very manageable. People are generally very kind to you with baby in tow. Drink LOTS of water, get to the airport extra early so you won't have to be rushing or stressing, bring your own healthy snacks, make sure you get up and walk on the plane every so often - and with all the water you will need to drink and being at 33 weeks..you'll have to go to the loo often anyway:), take advantage of the 3 hour flight to finish reading a great birthing or parenting book. I have lots of great recommendations if you are wondering what is good to read.
Really, it will be fine, and have fun at the wedding!

Hi N., congratulations on your little angel. I think you'll be just fine. I am a flight attendant and I flew/worked past my 34th week and could have gone up to 36 weeks but I really wanted the time off. I never had any problems with morning sickness or any other serious complications, so flying didn't trigger anything. I really think you'll be fine. If you get a little nausious just drink some gingerale but honestly I think that's only if your normally queezy. I'm pretty confident that you'll be just fine.

I flew multiple times throughout my pregnancy. As early as 9 wks to California, 20 wks to Chicago, and as late as 33 wks to Seattle for a baby shower! I was blessed with a very smooth pregnancy & and healthy baby girl. My only suggestions are to be sure you stay hydrated and WALK!

Drink plenty of water! Flying has a tendancy to dehydrate people. I was drinking almost a gallon the days I would fly. I'd start with 32oz before I left the house, buy a liter at the airport once I was thru security, tons of water on the airplane, and then once I landed, that's right, I'd drink some more! I know, like we don't have to run to the girls' room enough as it is, but keep in mind, getting dehydrated is one of the leading causes for pre-term labor and add the heat & flying on top of that, it's important to keep the water coming! You probably get the "water" talk all the time from your Dr. anyway with it so hot, so this is probably not anything you haven't heard already.

Secondly, Ohio, you're probably looking at 5 hrs on an airplane minimum with boarding, flight, taxiing - uhhh! Be sure to get up a few times during flight and "walk". I would go back to the galley, (the flight attendants should understand) and "stretch my legs", if not able to "move about", than do ankle rolls, knee bends, etc. at your seat.

If you have more questions, please feel free to email me.
p.s. Have a great time at the wedding! Take care!

Hi N.,

I flew right up until my doctor said I couldn't anymore (34 weeks I think) and had no complications whatsoever. Everyone was especially nice and considerate too since it was obvious I was very pregnant. :-)

Make sure you get up and walk around several times. You can get blood clots. I flew, not even that far along, and I think you will be really uncomfortable. Wear really loose clothes and shoes.
