Hello! I saw the request for mosquitos...which made me think someone may be able to help me with my fly problem. We seem to have a large problem with fly's ...never had this problem before and several of my neighbors are having issues too. Obviously, I can spend my day chasing them around with my fly-swatter, but if anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated. Also,

What can I do next?

try using that fly paper....seems to help with us when we put it on the trash can outside and we keep the trash can outside. I think that they are bad everywhere!

This is pretty gross, but a couple of summers ago we suddenly had flies everywhere - in the house. Could not figure out what was going on, until my husband found a dead rat in the basement. Flies had laid eggs there and turned it into a maggot/fly factory. Absolute horror!! There might be a dead animal near your house. Just an idea.

What Rachel said is something to think about if they are all around your neighborhood more than usual. One of our sons lived in a nice apartment and got flies all over the place and finally he called maintenance and they had to exterminate in the walls somewhere, maybe in the shed, but they said that means something is dead somewhere in the walls, etc. It might be a thought to check out. After they exterminated the flies were gone.

My friends all swear that putting some water in a ziplock bag or other clear type bag and hanging it near your doors and windows will keep flys away. They use this for bbq's and everything and I've never seen flys around. I have no idea why it works but it does! good Luck!

This year seems to have brought out all the flies, fruit flies and other pest.

I hung the fly strips by the doors that get used the most. Not the most attractive things in the world but they work! I take them down if I have company but I haven't had a fly in my house yet and we we were getting them all the time since we have dogs that go in and out.

Also do a walk around your property to check for any standing water or something else that might be attracting them.

T., it is definitely not pretty to look at but the fly ribbons work really well, I don't know why but flies tend to go towards windows so if you hang one in a corner by a door near where they fly in or by a window you should take care of quite a few, I realize it is yucky to look at. : (
Also I think maybe there is something on the ribbon that attracts them. Lots of luck, I myself and battling a fruit fly invasion, and I don't even have any fruit in the house now ( although we usually have bananas.)

A friend of mine just told me of a crazy way to keep flies out of the house, it sounds ridiculous but it really works
Fill a baggie with water, close with a twist tie and hang it on your front and back doors
The flies just go away
Who knows why but it works

For regular house flies we just hang the sticky strips. like someone else said, they don't look the greatest, but they help alot. Otherwise I just turn my 8 year old loose and he'll catch tons for the fish..lol. For fruit flies, a small bowl of cider vinegar with a couple drops of dish soap works wonders! Good luck!

ive never personally tried it, but i know i have talked to a lot of people who have used dried hedge-apples (those giant green brain looking things that fall off trees?) in their homes and they are supposed to repel flies and spiders?
